Lots of bluefish were caught in the surf this past week. Some days were
better than others, but the good days were good! Anglers came in saying they
were catching bluefish anywhere from 10 to 18-inches. Finger mullet seemed
to be the ticket. Anglers either cut the mullet into chunks on top and
bottom surf rigs, or they used the finger mullet whole on "finger mullet"
rigs.

John Young from Pasadena MD e-mailed in his report: "I fished 71st street
on 9/22 using spot and squid. I caught 2 dogfish, a whiting and a undersize
trout before a red fox stole my bait. If your fishing the beach around this
area keep your bait in a cooler the fox isn't afraid of you. I called animal
control and they told me he was fine as long as he wasn't snarling at me.
This was a first for me."

The 10th Annual Harbor Tackle Red Drum Tournament Sponsored by AMSA was held
on Assateague Island,
September 22 thru 25.Beverly & Terry Fleming report: "Unfortunately there
were not many fish this year. Andrew Kumjian caught a 28 inch striper late
Thursday afternoon. The only red drum of the tournament was reeled in
Saturday morning by David Moore. Lots of sharks and skates were taken during
the tournament. Marcus Crowley came away with largest trash fish by catching
66 inch shark Thursday evening.

The following is the final results:

Thursday, September 22, 2011
6:05 PM - 28 inch striper - Andrew Kumjian
11:40 PM - 66 inch shark - Marcus Crowley
Saturday, September 24, 2011
8:30 AM - 51 inch red drum - David Moore"

More drum were caught last week:

"Esoxhunter" posted: "Well I was down last Tuesday and Wednesday. Got a drum
only 2 hours in. My first drum! Lucky for me a ranger was there and took a
pic. The fish ate a small bunker chunk. Been trying for 4 years without any
luck but now I got one! Ready to roll now...."

Didn't hear of many bluefish on Assateague, but we had them in Ocean City
and the Delaware State Park.

"Drmorris14" posted on Friday: "Fished DSSP yesterday afternoon from about
3-6. Caught about a dozen blues, the largest about 14 inches or so."

"Trimic" posted on Stripers Online on Sunday: "Fished the Old Inlet Fall
surf classic this wekend with a couple buds. Lots and lots of short blues to
keep us busy...several small dogfish.....5 toothy sharks about 24 inches
each (which I believe were spinner sharks) and several wiskered ling
cod-like fish. Only a few scoring fish were caught in the whole tourney. Had
a sea monster take me east Saturday about 4:15 p.m....which I couldn't
turn...on a bunker chunk. It was an interesting hit however. It wasn't a
fast knock down...but the rod gradually started bendiing until it was in a
pretzel, like the critter didn't know it was hooked at first...almost
nonchalantly. Don't know if that is characteristic or any particular
critters....Any experience with this type of hit? Otherwise alternated heads
and chunks from Thursday through Sunday with with just the monster bite on a
chunk. Otherwise everything else was caught on finger mullet rigs and
modified top and bottom rigs. Had great food, drink, and company and met
many nice folk.
"

I gather the bite was best during the week and through Friday. Saturday
reports were "slim." High waves I hear... Anyway, it's that time of year for
blues and when the weather is right, the "bite" is right!

Tautog fishing is open and MD and anglers are catching them in the usual
spots. Bulkhead along 2nd through 4th Streets has been the best spot.
Anglers are catching them pretty good, though it's been hard to get keepers.
That should improve as the water gets cooler. Tautog also bite from the
Route 50 Bridge, Ocean City Inlet, the end of 6th Street and the end of the
Oceanic Pier.

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a "
sputnik sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always
carry a selection of sputnik sinkers in my tackle box.

Flounder!

We had reports of flounder this week. Lots of "shorts" with a few nice ones
mixed in. East Channel was the best fishing for keepers.

Captain Jeffrey Grimes of Helbent Charters e-mailed in his report: "Mother
Nature still is not smiling on us! Rain and Fog had caused my weekend
charter to cancel and reschedule. There is still many weeks of fishing left
so give me a call and lets get hook up! See you in the water."

"Helbent Charters" offering half to full day bay and coastal fishing trips.

Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports on Thursday: "The "Bay Bee" had a good morning trip,
returning with 5 keepers. They also had 70 throwbacks... all in the East
Channel."

On Friday: "The " Bay Bee
had another 5 keepers this morning and a bunch of throwbacks in the East
Channel. Besides that, there wasn't much going on in the bay.

Saturday was very slow.

Earlier in the week, Wed, Water in the bay cleared up during the incoming
tide. Good bite around the Rt. 50 Bridge. There are also a lot of guys lined
up along the East Channel Bulkhead, so the bite must be good off there as
well. Capt. Monty on the "Morning Star" returned with a nice size flounder
and a good catch of sea bass. On Tues, Flounder bite improved in the bay.
Especially for those fishing with live bunker or mullet. East Channel was
the spot.

We at Oyster Bay Tackle had one flounder weighed in on Tuesday. Karen and
Dennis Greco from Plymouth Meeting, PA fished Stinky Beach for around 15
minutes when Karen caught her first Flounder of the year using Live Minnows.
The 21 inch Flounder weighed in at 3 and 1/4 pds. This pic is in our Photo
Gallery under Ocean City
Bay and Inshore Photos.

I went "fun fishing" on the Route 50 Bridge last Tuesday. Had fun catching
lots of short flounder and a few snapper blues.

Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) is open (no fishing license required when
fishing on this pier).Anglers are having good action with flounder,
bluefish, and a few tautog. Anglers catch blues at night on
Spec Rigs and
Got-cha Plugs. J.J. wants everyone to know that when you come to the
pier, go to the Oceanic Motel and park, then come buy your ticket and he
will give you a pass for your car. There is also a big municipal pay lot
about a block away from the pier. Call the Oceanic Pier at 410-289-2602 for
parking details. (Crabbing has also been good from the Pier.) Female crabs
are leaving the bay to go offshore, and yes, in Maryland Coastal Bays you
are allowed to keep mature female crabs.

Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on Sept 19th :Bluefish all over the place
this past weekend. On the beach Saturday morning. In the Inlet on incoming
tide. They started catching croakers pretty good too. Back in the bay, a few
in the Inlet and on the beach. Loads of small flounder around. The best
striper bite is at nigh but it is nothing special.

Reminder: Tautog re-opens Sept 29th in DE.

Bill Sports Center in Lewes, DEL (302-645-7654) reports on the 20th that "B"
buoy offshore is catching a variety of fish including flounder, bluefish,
mackerel, amberjack, sea bass, sea robin, sand shark, spiny dogfish, and
blowfish. Flounder at Massey's Ditch and Massey's Landing. Lots of spot from
the Cape Henelopen Pier. Lots of bluefish in the surf up to 16".

Lewes Harbour Marina (302-645-6227) reports on Sept 22nd: "

Inshore bottom fishermen have had a tough time of it the past couple weeks,
contending with runoff and debris from heavy rains, strong currents brought
on by moon phases and ground swells from offshore storms. However, for those
willing to travel a little farther, bottom action with sea bass has been
pretty good. Wrecks and obstructions in the twenty fathom region seem to be
where the bass are hanging out. Fishermen aboard the Pirate King had a great
wreck trip Saturday, returning with a load of sea bass, big ling and even a
few cod. Captain Dave Walker, Joe Walker and Dave Popovich made the run to
twenty fathoms Wednesday and were rewarded with their limit of 75 plump
bass, including citation knotheads of 3.41 and 3.48 pounds. The guys said it
was constant double headers, and it didn't take long to cull their box full
of keepers. They also had about 30 bluefish. There are still some sea bass
on the open bottom between DB and DA Buoys, but there's more volume of fish
on the snags a little more offshore. Delaware's sea bass season is open
until October 12, when it is shut down through October 31. It reopens
November 1 and runs until the end of December. A few flounder continue to
come off the Old Grounds south of DB Buoy, as they make their move offshore.
Some are real quality specimens, such as the 11.39 pound citation doormat
intercepted by Gary Ebling on Saturday. Some flounder were still found in
Delaware Bay as well. Flatties were reported from the Horseshoe area
northeast of Brandywine. Boats anchored there also encountered kingfish,
blowfish, bluefish and surprising numbers of legal sized weakfish. Maybe
it's a sign that we'll see more trout next spring. Bluefish ranging in size
from little snippers to 2 pounds have been scattered over much of the Bay.
Blues have often been seen busting baitfish in the rip outside the Outer
Wall, and the choppers can be caught by drifting shiners or cut mullet on
bottom rigs, or by casting small bucktails and metals like Kastmasters,
Gator spoons and Stingsilvers. Surf casters at Cape Henlopen also got into
blues using cut mullet. Spot are still inside the Bay, and folks at the
rails of Cape Henlopen Pier had plenty of the tasty panfish while baiting
with bits of bloodworm and Fishbites. Many anglers are looking forward to
the opening of Tautog season on September 29. Tog, along with some lingering
triggerfish and sheepshead should be found along the Inner and Outer Walls
and Ice Breaker rockpiles, as well as on Bay artificial reefs and wrecks."

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on Sept 22nd:

.... It's been a pretty interesting week of fishing here at the Wharf. Since
my last report we have seen a couple really decent trips with some nice
Flatties, some more wind and big waves, and some of our best Sea Bass
fishing since the spring run.

I talked about a little transition in my last report and I think that we are
now right in the middle of this switch going from primarily drift fishing
for Flounder to now what is most likely going to be anchor fishing catching
mostly Sea Bass. While I did see a couple of trips last week that were
interesting to say the least with the Flounder, I definitely think the time
has come to give them up and fish primarily for the Bass and just accept the
random Flounder when they pop up off of the structures that we will be
fishing over. The Flounder for the most part seem to be pushing further off
the beach now for the spawn. I do expect to continue to see a few nice
Flatties but just about all of our effort from here on out will be anchoring
over wrecks and reefs targeting primarily just the Sea Bass and whatever
else may be biting around the wrecks.

For a few folks, our last week of drift fishing proved to be fruitful with
the Flounder. We actually saw several limits and some very nice quality fish
landed in the few days we were able to get out and the conditions were
favorable.

I will continue with my all-day trips sailing daily departing the docks at
7:00 a.m. and we will be anchoring over wrecks and reefs every trip. I
haven't been hitting the docks before 4:00 p.m. Sea Bass will be the primary
target until the closure on October 12th. Half-Day trips are on a short
schedule now sailing just Friday through Mondays at 8:00 and then again at
1:00 p.m. Half day trips will be targeting Croakers, Blues, Flounder or
anything that they can catch within their range. We also have a few more
special trips on the schedule, the next deep drop trip is on October 29th to
the 30th.

If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf
or you would like to book a private charter or reserve space on a special
trip please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck,
inlet and trolling trips. Here's a couple of his reports to get you a taste
of what he has to offer:

09/23/11 Out with the monster Wahoo killers of the last two years, 98 &
103 lbs. Ran fifty mile to the south looking for, well, anything. Worked
some "hay fields" in the morning that were truly a pain. Managed a couple
small Mahi, a small Yellowfin and missed a White Marlin. Also found some of
the cutest little baby Blackfin Tuna's which were released. Sometime around
eleven another White Marlin pops up in the spread. After messing around with
two of our short baits he hangs himself on the long rigger. Fifteen minutes
later he's at the boat. Next hour or so is dead but our quiet time is rudely
interrupted when a Spearfish eats one of the baits the mate was clearing
weeds off of. After a ten minute fight, we have the first Spearfish of the
season, heck, several seasons, next to the boat.

09/22/11 Out with a family of six from KY. Trip was to be a full day of
wreck fishing but at the last minute we decided to try for some "turkeys"
before wreckin'. Trolling bite was poor and after a couple miles of dragging
baits, we only had one small fish and two other bites that didn't find the
hook. Turned our attention to Sea Bass and the bite was epic. Hit bottom,
count to five, and you've got a fish hammering your bait. Keeper ratio was
somewhere around 8:1. Back in the slip with 23 Sea Bass just waiting for the
deep fryer.

09/20/11 Half-day premium wreck trip with a party of two. Sea Bass bite was
very good with a fair number of keepers thrown in the box, just right for a
couple fish dinners.

James A. Donofrio, executive director of the Recreational Fishing

has been actively working on the fisheries crisis. The RFA believes the
future of our fisheries is dependent on fixing the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery
Conservation and Management Act which has laid down strict time-frames that
do not take into account livelihoods and that a fishery is rebounding
steadily.

Maryland Fishing License

Anglers fishing in Ocean City will need to purchase a saltwater fishing
license. This license will cover both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastal
waters and surf of Ocean City and Assateague Island. Yes, this includes surf
fishing. If you already have a Chesapeake Bay Saltwater license you are good
to go! Anglers will be able to purchase the license online. The
license you want to choose is "Bay and Coastal Sport" You can either choose
a year-round or 7-day. The online site will add on a small convenience fee.
The state has set the tackle stores up with paper licenses so we can do your
licenses in our stores.
If you know you are coming to Ocean City, and you want to get it done ahead
of time you can
also call a toll free number (1-800-918-2870)
or print and mail in an application. Boat
Licenses: $50 and everyone on your boat can go
fishing without a license. You will get a personal license along with your
boat license, so you can go shore fishing as well. They will send you your
sticker for your boat in the mail. If you come to our stores, we have the
stickers.

Mail the application to their main office:

Maryland Dept. of Natural resources
Annapolis Service Center
P.O. Box 1869
1804 West Street, Suite 300
Annapolis, MD 21401

If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat
License, you don't have to buy a license, but you do have to register online. This
is free but cannot be done over the phone. (The state says it has no money
for a phone line.) Print out your number and keep an id with
you when you go fishing. You can also download it to your smart phone and
show it to the DNR officer.
It only takes a couple minutes. If you have no printer or smart phone, write
down the authorization number.

Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license,
it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA licence
you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each
state can "try" to figure out "how many" fish are being caught in their own
individual states. (VA Free
Registry)

If you want to go fishing in Ocean City without a license, your choices will
be the "Oceanic Pier" or to go fishing on a party or charter boat. You can
also go crabbing and clamming in Ocean City without a license. Or you can
fish off your own private dock.

Senior citizens 65 and older. Cost is $5 if you have a MD driver's license
and are a resident of MD,
but if you are a non-resident there is no break. No break for boat licenses
either. $50 resident or non-resident,
plus around $3 for the internet fees.

Contact Info
If you have any questions regarding Maryland's sport fishing license
requirements, you may contact Fisheries Service via e mail:
customerservice@dnr.state.md.us or by calling (410-656-9526).

Following is the fee schedule for 2011:

Senior License (year round) - $5.00
Resident License (year round) - $15.00
Resident License (7-day) - $6.00
Non-resident (year round) - $22.50
Non- resident (7-day) - $12.00
Pleasure Boat Decal (covers everyone on boat - year round) - $50.00
Commercial Fishing Pier License (year round) - $290.00

No license is required for:
Boat decal passengers
Those fishing in "free fishing" areas
Those fishing from their waterfront properties
Anglers under 16 years old
Anglers fishing on a licensed charter, party or guide boat
Anglers fishing commercially under a valid license
