Fishing Report by Sue Foster
Water Temperature (WTMP): 74.7 °F°
Fishing this week was still good on flounder though there are a tremendous
amounts of throw backs. Croaker fishing is up and down in the bay. Some days
anglers catch plenty. Other days they can't find them. Blues are biting
around the Inlet area and Route 50 Bridge. A few nice stripers were caught
at the inlet. Stripers are also biting around the Rt. 50 Bridge and South
Jetty. Big Spot are in the bay as well, but no small spot. Little finger
mullet and peanut bunker are around for bait for cast netters. Surf fishing
continues to be good with kingfish (whiting) and Norfolk spot and sometimes
a few croaker in the mornings. Sharks, big rays, snapper blues, kingfish and
some croaker are biting at night. Route 50 Bridge continues to be excellent
fishing at night with stripers (lots of shorts) and blues. By day, the
Bridge is seeing flounder, tautog near the draw, and blues. Offshore, the
bite continues with sea bass and flounder.
(Please read the info about the new MD Saltwater License at the end of this
report. The state set up the tackle stores in Ocean City and anglers can now
buy their MD licenses and boat license stickers at both our locations.)
Please bring cash to buy licenses. If you want to buy and print your license
online, I have all the links where you can do this at the bottom of this

(Weekly tides at bottom of report.) I am upset to find that our green tide
tables have a typo problem starting 8/8 and lasting until 9/1. Apparently
the printer has flip flopped the tides and low tide is high tide, and high
tide is low tide. We apologize for the problem and wish I had noticed it
earlier than today! So if you are reading the tides from 8/8 till 9/1 just
know that when the tides say high tide, it's really low tide, and vice
versa. Or use the Coastal Fisherman tide tables.
Kingfish, some Norfolk spot, and an occassional croaker are biting from the
beach. The best bite is early in the morning. At night, we're seeing still
seeing sharks, skates, huge rays and snapper bluefish. Remember, you cannot
keep a sand tiger, sand bar, or dusky shark. If in doubt, always release any
sharks with teeth.
Anglers on Assateague beaches are having action with the small stuff too.
- "Shark Hunter" posted on the 3rd: "This report is from 8/2 afternoon and
8/3 morning. Caught a few flounder, shorties, using strips of spot that I
caught using fishbites. 4 inch strip of spot on size 1 hook retrieved slowly
through the water. Most hits came from just behind the wash. I figure the
flounder are waiting just far enough back to ambush anything swimming along
the shoreline current. It seems you have to place the bait near the
flounder, as the flounder don't go looking for the bait. Caught a few small
throwback kings on cutbaits.
Caught many spot that will be used for bait later today if the weather
permits. "
"CrazyBellRinger" posted on the 2nd:
I didn't see one flounder at ai all weekend . The whiting were there and
easy to catch so that is what i did. Are whiting always easy to catch? Do
they count? I thought maybe they don't count because the only fishing i have
ever done that was easier was sunny fishing. Last year i was down there it
was fluke til noon, this time just non stop whiting. "
Dave Bartlett e-mailed in on 8/2 from the Delaware Beach:
"We had probably one of the 5 best days ever on the surf on Sunday, catching
a real variety of fish (kings, croakers, ocean perch, spot- some big 10+
inches, stingray, shark, blues and even some trout..!! No flies, wind was in
our favor most of the day, lots of sun, and good friends. As the summer
should be..." (He also caught and released a 4 foot shark.)
Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:

fish in the surf, you need to study this!

We had a few days of rough surf this weekend. If you find it hard to hold
bottom try using a "
sputnik sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always
carry a selection of sputnik sinkers in my tackle box.
Flounder! We're getting lots of reports of flounder from all over the bay,
but there are tremendous amounts of "short" flounder. We took some pictures
this week to prove there's a few keepers out there!
Thursday was a good fishing day. Jake Allnutt and Rusty Burger from Ocean
City, Md fished the West Channel using Live Minnow along with Berkley Gulp.
They had a nice 2.25 pounder and was 19 inches. Alex and Thomas Fitch from
Bethlehem, PA fished in Ocean City this week and caught a nice pair of
Flounder. Each fish was over 18 inches. A nice 2 pounder and a 3 pounder.
Ian Arciaga from Baltimore, MD caught this Triggerfish on his Birthday at
the Ocean City Inlet using Squid as bait. Dave Beach from Ocean City, Md
caught this 19 inch 2.75 pound Flounder from the bulkhead using live
minnows.
On Tuesday, 10 year old Nick Shover caught 19.5" behind assateague island
using Live Minnows. Dustin Squier from Hallstead, Pa caught this 26 inch 7.5
Flounder from the RT 50 Bridge using Squid as bait. Last Monday, Kyle Baker
caught a flounder in the East Channel 19 inch, 2lb 6oz, on Gulp.
Travis Baker of Asburn Va caught a 19 1/2 inch flounder near the Rt. 50
bridge on a live spot on 8/3. The flounder went 2 pounds 1 1/2 ounces.
Weighed in at Fenwick Tackle.
These pictures are our Photo Gallery under Ocean City
Bay and Inshore Photos.
Yianni Gagianas of Oyster Bay Tackle went fishing this week with Wayne and
Ham McPartland.
They fished the Inlet and near the piling of the Route 50 Bridge with
peanut bunker, and little live mullets and caught lots of bluefish and a
flounder. They had a great time and caught lots of fish!
Croaker! I had one angler say he caught over 60 out of his boat last
Tuesday. Some anglers do good in the bay between Rt 90 and the Thorofare.
Others do good in the Inlet and the bay behind Assateague. Other days, the
croaker are not to be found!
Hammy on Stripers online posted: "OC inlet and West Channel area. NOT A
SINGLE FLOUNDER was caught yesterday afternoon/evening. Croaker seem to be
running good this year, having to try and avoid them again yesterday, and I
even caught some larger ones yesterday, 13 or 14 inches. Caught about 20
total (kept three in the 13-14 inch rainge) and caught one large ray."
Rt. 50 Bridge! Flounder are biting by day. Lots of shorts... some
keepers....Anglers using spreader bars and big floats are doing the best.
At night, there's been stripers and bluefish. Heard of a couple keeper
stripers caught at the sea wall at the Ocean City Inlet at night on small
lures fished in close to the rocks.
Captain Jeffrey Grimes of "Helbent Charters" e-mailed in on 8/7: "Lots of
time on the water this week with some great kids. The weather was great and
the water was clean which helped keep the Flounder biting! We moved around
the bay and inlet as the tides changed from out going to incoming looking
for the bite to turn on. We were fishing the Airport to the commercial
harbor waiting till the tide change and then we would hit the inlet. We were
rewarded everyday with a nice number of Flounder each day. When the tide
started to run to hard we mover up the bay to Harbor Island and we found a
real good bite with some larger fish. Every kid this week hooked up and
reeled in their own fish including a six year old. Gulp continued to be the
hot bait this week with white still out fishing the other colors and live
minnows. We were getting a lot of tails bitten off a the Gulp and I thought
it was some small 5ea Bass but was surprised to find several Gulp tails in
the mouth of the Flounder we caught! Another great week of fishing in OC.
See you on the water."

Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) is now open (no fishing license required when
fishing on this pier). Anglers are catching lots of flounder along with some
big ones caught between 25 and 27-inches this past week. There are a
couple croaker runs every day, some blues, shad at night, and lots of small
fish for the kids to catch. Anglers catch blues and shad at night on
Spec Rigs and
Got-cha Plugs. J.J. comments that anglers are also catching crabs. J.J.
wants everyone to know that when you come to the pier, go to the Oceanic
Motel and park, then come buy your ticket and he will give you a pass for
your car. There is also a big municipal pay lot about a block away from the
pier. Call the Oceanic Pier at 410-289-2602 for parking details.
Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on Aug 4th : "Right now its a nighttime

the Asian contingent says there are a few keeper tog in the mix as
well. There has been a fleet of boats working from the end of the north

beach seems to be picking up. At three R's, Don Perrot picked up a nice 22''
flounder and some keeper blues. Jimmy, his fishing neighbor, had a couple of
blues plus a 55" black tip shark all on fresh mullet."
Lewes Harbour Marina (302-645-6227) reports on Aug 4th: "August 4, 2011 -
Croakers Are Here
Delaware Bay fishermen have been picking at croakers over the past few
weeks, but there have been no appreciable numbers until the past couple
days. Anglers had good catches today in the northwest corner of reef #8, the
Star Site. Captain Charlie Helmer's group aboard Tranquila kept 70 nice
hardheads. Patrons on the Angler got into croakers too. Baiting with clams,
bloodworms and Fishbites on size 4 hooks did the trick. In additon to
croakers, there have been plenty of spot around. The tasty panfish were
found at Site 8, along the inner wall and Cape Henlopen pier, in Roosevelt
Inlet, Broadlkill River and Lewes Canal. Bits of bloodworm or Fishbites on
small hooks or sabiki rigs were effective. Blowfish, kingfish and snapper
blues were mixed with hardheads and spot on the Bay reefs. This is normally
the time of year when some big flounder are caught, and true to form, a few
weighty specimens hit the dock this week. The most impressive was an 11.72
pound welcome mat landed by Captain Vince Keagy, who runs the Miss Kirstin.
The 31 inch fluke attacked a shad dart with a strip of squid at Site 7, and
was brought to the boat on 12 pound test line. Vince said he's been fishing
Delaware Bay for 35 years, but that was his heaviest one so far. Jack
Henriksen, Ricky Mills and John "Dynamo" Deiner worked the Brown Shoal reef
for 8 keeper flounder last Friday, including Jack's 5.21 pounder. Tood Mills
took a 5.13 pounder off Site 7. Ocean fishing produced some nice flatties
too. Last Friday, guys on the Grizzly got 11 keepers at Site 10. Among them
was a 6.5 pound beauty for Jonathan Thompson. On Sunday, flukers an the Lil'
Angler scored 14 flounder to take home out of 57 caught. Wayne DeMarco
decked a 5.77 pounder. Bobby and Buckwheat Bryant, Brad Hawkes and Steve
Reynolds put 12 in the box at Site 10 Monday. Bobby boated a 5.5 pounder.
Joe Walker and his crew captured 12 quality flatfish at Site 10 Tuesday,
including a 7.14 pound citation for Tom Coyle, and Bobby Bryant's 6.05. Katy
Did returned from Site 10 Wednesday with a dozen nice flatfish. The
yellowfin chunk bite at the Hot Dog cooled off after the middle of last
week, but recently, tuna were taken trolling at the Dog. ..."

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on Aug 4th:
I think I can give you a much better report this week as far as our Flounder
fishing goes; with the exception of a couple of really bum days our Flounder
landings for the past seven days have been much better than that of the last
couple weeks, landing well over 100 keepers for just this past week
including the two days with just a small handful of keepers on the boat for
our entire day. Croakers have also started to make a fare showing now up in
the Delaware Bay and Capt. H.D. has had another great long-range trip over
the weekend catching Tilefish and Sea Bass on the offshore grounds.
Back up in the Delaware Bay Capt. Mike is proud to report that he is finally
bending the rods with a few Croakers. He has been seeing almost a daily
increase in the numbers of these tasty little bottom scrappers for about a
week now and with any luck this is just the beginning of good things to
come. For whatever reason these Croakers have been late arriving in the
Delaware Bay for the last couple years but are a very welcome site now for
the inshore bottom bouncers bound to the Bay. Capt. Mike also reports he is
seeing a variety with some Spot, Flounder, Blowfish, and Kingfish on many of
his trips. Half-Day trips will continue to run two trips daily sailing at
8:00 a.m. and then again at 1:00 p.m. Half night trips sail only on Friday
and Saturday nights departing the dock at 6:00 p.m.
I will continue to sail daily with my all-day trips departing the docks at
7:00 a.m. arrival time back at the docks is roughly around 4:00 p.m. we will
be primarily targeting Flounder. All bait is furnished and for the most part
we have been trying to jig these fish up with bucktails and or teasers
fishing almost exclusively over the rocks and the natural coral bottoms of
the old grounds. We also have Half-Day trips sailing daily at 8:00 a.m. and
then again at 1:00 p.m. Half- Day trips have been seeing a nice variety of
fish. Half night trips sail only on Friday and Saturday nights departing the
dock at 6:00 p.m.

croakers and 3 spot.

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck,
inlet and trolling trips. Here's a couple of his reports to get you a taste
of what he has to offer:
08/05/11 Today starts will small craft warnings. I tell the charter I
think we can do it and if they think it's too rough, I'll turn back and
refund their deposit. After 25 miles we throw out the spread. Before the
second line even touches the water, we put a nice twelve pound Mahi in the
box. The rest of the day held a steady Mahi bite. Not doubles and triples,
but a steady pick. Every fifteen to twenty minutes we would get hit.
Surprise of the day, a fifteen pound Barracuda. At the days end, we have
sixteen Mahi in the box to seventeen pounds and the first Cuda of the year
in OC. Love it when the yellow boat fishes and the million dollar monster
rigs cancel.
08/04/11 Back to the same spot forty five mile east with two anglers from
MI. Morning was super slow with only a few short bites, surely small Mahi.
Moved back on the shoal around 10:30 and found good bait. First pass and we
have a tuna explode on a bait but missed the hook. Second pass, nothing.
Before I can make a third pass a call comes on the radio from the US Navy
ordering all boats in the area to leave NOW!! A live fire exercise will
begin shortly. Decide to make a 15 mile move back inshore and work some
gear. We no longer arrive at the gear and the wind comes up hard out of the
north, like going from flat calm to 15 to 20 knots in no time. Worked the
gear as long as we could, missing plenty of small Mahi, but putting a couple
in the box, one to 15 lbs. Called it a day slightly early since conditions
we on the verge of terrible.

Crabs! Owners setting crab pots behind their houses in North Ocean City are
reporting catches of crabs. Talked to one lady who says she's still catching
an average of 7 crabs per day out of her crab pot behind her condo.
Crabbers are also chicken necking from the Northside Park at 125th Street.

Maryland Fishing License
Anglers fishing in Ocean City will need to purchase a saltwater fishing
license. This license will cover both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastal
waters and surf of Ocean City and Assateague Island. Yes, this includes surf
fishing. If you already have a Chesapeake Bay Saltwater license you are good
to go! Anglers will be able to purchase the license online. The
license you want to choose is "Bay and Coastal Sport" You can either choose
a year-round or 7-day. The online site will add on a small convenience fee.
The state has set the tackle stores up with paper licenses so we can do your
licenses in our stores.
If you know you are coming to Ocean City, and you want to get it done ahead
of time you can
also call a toll free number (1-800-918-2870)
or print and mail in an application. Boat
Licenses: $50 and everyone on your boat can go
fishing without a license. You will get a personal license along with your
boat license, so you can go shore fishing as well. They will send you your
sticker for your boat in the mail. If you come to our stores, we have the
stickers.
Mail the application to their main office:
Maryland Dept. of Natural resources

Annapolis, MD 21401
If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat
License, you don't have to buy a license, but you do have to register online. This
is free but cannot be done over the phone. (The state says it has no money
for a phone line.) Print out your number and keep an id with
you when you go fishing. You can also download it to your smart phone and
show it to the DNR officer.
It only takes a couple minutes. If you have no printer or smart phone, write
down the authorization number.
Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license,
it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA licence
you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each
state can "try" to figure out "how many" fish are being caught in their own
individual states. (VA Free
Registry)
If you want to go fishing in Ocean City without a license, your choices will
be the "Oceanic Pier" or to go fishing on a party or charter boat. You can
also go crabbing and clamming in Ocean City without a license. Or you can
fish off your own private dock.
Senior citizens 65 and older. Cost is $5 if you have a MD driver's license
and are a resident of MD,
but if you are a non-resident there is no break. No break for boat licenses
either. $50 resident or non-resident,
plus around $3 for the internet fees.
