Ocean City Maryland & Assateague Island - Delaware Beaches - Ocean n Bay Fishing Report
By Sue Foster, Oyster Bay Tackle Shop, Ocean City MD - Fenwick Island DE
April 25th, 2011
Fishing Report by Sue Foster
Water Temperature (WTMP): 52.0 °F°
We had lousy weather most of Easter Weekend but anglers still had luck
fishing from boats! The first flounder were also caught from the Route 50
Bridge and the Oceanic Pier. Stripers were caught on the Rt. 50 Bridge.
Tautog hit from the bulkhead and Oceanic Pier. Though most of Easter
Weekend saw rough surf, some days anglers caught some drum, stripers, skate,
blowfish, and a few bluefish from the surf.
(Please read the info about the new MD Saltwater License at the end of this
report. The easiest way to buy your license is call the toll free number.
You can call, write down a confirmation number and fish right away. Year
round licenses and stickers will be mailed to you. We have called and
tested this number. The people are fast and very friendly! 1-800-918-2870)
If you want to buy and print your license online, I have all the links where
you can do this at bottom of this report. Or, I will be happy to print you a
license at Oyster Bay Tackle from the public website if you like. (Please
use the toll-free number for 7-day licenses.) Fenwick Tackle is busy doing
Delaware licenses, so please come to Oyster Bay Tackle for MD licenses.
Please read all the details in the paragraphs at the end of this report.
Please, don't spend $15 on the Federal Registry to fish inshore. You will be
wasting your $15! (And remember, we didn't make the new laws, and we are not
making one dime on printing MD licenses, so please, if you come in to Oyster
Bay to get a license printed, contribute to the "charity jar" or buy
something in our store.) If you have questions call us at Oyster Bay Tackle
at 410-524-3433 or e-mail me at sue@oysterbaytackle.com. I'll be glad to
help you.
Something I learned this weekend: (I had a little trouble printing the
free MD registry for a customer and found out it was a problem with my store
computer's software which I fixed. When I called to question the problem, I
was told you can go to the site and register multiple times if you have a
problem printing. You just go in, start over, and do it again. The site says
you "must" print before leaving and that you cannot come back and reprint,
which made me think you could only register once. But I was wrong. You can
start over and do it again. The system catches the multiple registries so you
are not counted multiple times.)

Assateague surf finally picked up. We had rough surf much of the weekend but
anglers that fished earlier in the week or braved the high surf, caught some
fish.
Randy from Catonsville e-mailed in: "Sue, stopped at your Fenwick store
and bought salt clams and caught a 25 lb. black drum and a 34 inch striper
Tues. morning the 19th from the surf fishing on Assateague. Released both
fish.
D-Man posted on Stripers Online on the 23rd: "This last week was spring
break so my kids had the week off from school. We gave it a shot and went
fishing for black drum and stripers. We had stiff winds most of the week
but we worked around that by fishing when the wind would die down some. We
fished early am till sunset, late in the day till middle of the night, etc.,
and gave it an honest effort. My son Jason caught a northern kingfish. We
also caught a southern kingfish, the variety I am used to seeing. I've never
caught one like Jason did.
About 4 hours later in the late afternoon my rod starts to bounce a little
and starts to do down. Well Enrique got to that rod real quickly and was
hooked up once he applied some pressure to the fish. Whatever it was, it
fought good and gave him a couple nice little runs. Once he got it in
closer, we saw what it was. Boy he was excited and then you could tell the
pressure was on from his facial expression. He then realized what most of
us do once we see a nice fish at the end of our line, we worry about losing
it. He did good getting the fish up close and only needed a little bit of
help at the very end when the fish was in the wash, the most dangerous part
of landing a fish in the surf. It measured at 36 inches and was a really
nice fish. (Black Drum). At the end of our trip, we ended up releasing 3
blacks and two kingfish, and countless skates one night . All in all, not
too bad. I am a proud dad."
"Qfueston" posted on the 22nd of April. Today was finally my day! 27lbs,
40". It came at 11:00 AM today from AI. Bunker chunk with a Fish Bite
bloodworm. (Striper!!!!)
Others came Thursday and got skunked. Others in Ocean City said it was hard
to hold bottom. Paul Norris said he caught and released a nice fat "short"
striper from 139th Street.
Oceanic Pier had a report of a 35" and a 38" striper from Assateague surf on
Sunday.
Blowfish were in the surf this past week. Edward Iannucci bought himself a
new surf rod and reel at our Fenwick Tackle location before the weekend and
sent me a picture of his son Eddie with a big fat blowfish! He said they
caught lots of skates and the blowfish were biting. Eddie had a ball. His
picture is in our Photo Gallery under Surf
Photos..
Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!
Need
surf
rigs? We have plenty in our shops or buy online! Shop Online
If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a "
sputnik sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always
carry a selection of sputnik sinkers in my tackle box.
Flounder! We're having a great start to a great season. Michael Kurtz of
Fenwick Island came into Oyster Bay Tackle with his limit of flounder
including one 5 pounds, 10 oz. 25-inches long. He was fishing with John
McBridge of Ocean City aboard the "Dairy Queen" fishing with live minnows in
the Thorofare on 4/19/11. His picture is in our Photo Gallery under Ocean City
Bay and Inshore Photos.
One angler came into Fenwick Tackle to get his boat license and told me his
neighbor had two 20-inch flounder and one 18-inch flounder on Friday. He was
fishing somewhere near the Route 90 Bridge with minnow/squid and
shiner/squid combos.
We talked to Capt Mac's Bait and Tackle down on Route 54 and he says he's
seen lots of boats with their limits of flounder so far this year.
Many people are fishing for tautog. Fish live green crabs or frozen sand
fleas.
Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports:SATURDAY, April, 23, 2011 - Nasty day today. Windy and
on the cold side. Water temp in the inlet did rise to over 50-degrees as the
day progressed. No flounder caught from what I heard. Good tog bite along
the rocks at Martha's Landing. Black drum being caught off the beach on
Assateague Island, plus an occassional striper. Some stripers have also been
landed off Delaware beaches as well.
FRIDAY, April 22, 2011 - Windy day today. Tough fishing. I did hear that
surfcasters continue to catch black drum, a few stripers and bluefish from
the surf off Assateague. Water temperature hovered around 49-degrees. A few
brave souls ventured out to the Thorofare and hooked into some throwback
flounder.
WEDNESDAY, April 20, 2011 - The "Get Sum" returned from their morning trip
with an 18-inch keeper flounder and 8 throwbacks. They were fishing west of
the Thorofare. The keeper was caught on a squid and minnow combination.
TUESDAY, April 19, 2011 - Flounder were reported hooked in the Thorofare,
but not many keepers. The fish were around Dog and ***** Islands. Mike Kurtz
did catch his limit of flatties in the Thorofare including a 5 lb. 10 oz.
fish that measured 25-inches. All the fish were caught on live minnows.Mate
on the "Morning Star" landed a personal best tautog while fishing at an
artificial reef today. The tog tipped the scales at 10 lbs. 3 oz. and was
hooked on a green crab.Tom Hart emailed me to say that he caught 3 throwback
flounder, but no keepers during the 3 hours he fished in the bay behind the
northern end of Assateague Island.
MONDAY, April 18, 2011 - Saw one flounder today, a 20-incher caught by Paul
Vreeland down near the Assateague Bridge. Paul used minnows for bait.Jake
Emche landed a 31-inch striper in the Thorofare tonight around 10:30. Jake
caught it on a jig head with a trout killer. Jake said he hooked a few
others also.
We at Oyster Bay heard that the stripers have also been caught on the Route
50 Bridge at night on swimming shad lures and other soft bodies on lead
heads. The weekend wasn't the best because of the windy weather, but earlier
in the week, we caught wind of some of this action.
Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) is now open and anglers are catching flounder!!!
On Easter Sunday they had their first summer flounder caught that was about
20-inches. The angler released it, so it's swimming out there for someone
else to catch! About 10 flounder were caught total. Most of those were
throwbacks. Anglers on the pier are catching tautog and lots of skate, and
interestly, lots of blowfish as well. On Friday, 38 blowfish were caught.
J.J. also heard of a couple nice keeper stripers caught from the beach on
Assateague on bunker (35" and 38") They had one striper caught and released
from the pier on Saturday that was 24 1/2 inches. J.J. wants everyone to
know that when you come to the pier, go to the Oceanic Motel and park, then
come buy your ticket and he will give you a pass for your car. There is also
a big municipal pay lot about a block away from the pier. Call the Oceanic
Pier at 410-289-2602 for parking details.
Capt. Doug from Skip's Charters reports:
"Hi Sue, It was a good week for fisherman here in O.C., more flounder from
the Thorofare, Tog from the Rt.50 and bulkheads, and Stripers,Stripers,
Stripers. Lets start with the flounder reports....I got out several times
this week, mostly fishing north at the Thorofare. Caught flounder on every
trip, with a few keepers just over the legal mark. 19.5" was the biggest
caught by Capt. J.W. Powell, live minnows and gulp seems to work the best. I
did see other boats catching flounder on most of the drifts. We fished all
out going tides, with water temps getting as high as 62 degrees one day. The
warmer the temp, the better the bite. Tog fishing continues to improve
downtown, especially from the Rt. 50 Bridge. Anglers are having the best
luck with green crabs and shrimp. The Striper bite really took off this
week, the hot spot was the 50 Bridge at night, heard reports of fisherman
catching stripers up to 40". On Easter Sunday surf anglers got into them on
Assategue Island, weighed one in at the tackle shop caught by Steve Bornyasz
and 2 sons, Jake and Zach from Cherry Hill, N.J. 38" 18.25lbs. They caught
it on Bunker on the south end of the Island. Also talked to my old mate,
Jake and he caught several keeper stripers this week. All his fish came from
the west channel north of the bridge on live eels. I'm going to fish the
south jetty this week with live bait, will report back next week on how that
turns out. Weather looks good for this week, with warming temps, some wind
forecasted for later in the week. Email me at captskip@oceancityfishing.com
or skipstackleshop@aol.com or call me on my cell at 410-430-5436.....) "
Their picture will be in our Photo Gallery shortly.
Clark from Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on April 18th: "A couple of 20
inch bluefish reported from the surf at 3R's. On fresh bunker. Also a report
of 20 inch bluefish in the Inlet back by the charter boats. Tautog fish has
picked up over the last few days as well."
Bill Sports Center (302-645-7654) reports: "Tautog at site 10 and 11. May
11th flounder will be 18-inches. Till then, they are still 18 1/2. VFW and
Massey's Landing have seen catches of flounder. Cape Henelopen Pier is good
on flounder as well. Tautog at the Inner and Outer Wall. Keeper stripers
have been caught on the surf at the Cape Henelopen and northern areas."

Hi All,
Got Tuesday in.
That was it.
An inshore trip: Fishing was very good, sometimes bordering on great;
especially with a flurry of good sized tags going by the rail at the end of
the day.
I've scheduled some more long trips and inshore days. One day in five; I
hope the weather man and my anglers get along better this coming week.
Just 3 reservations last Tuesday. Another pair of anglers fell from the sky
and off we went.
Kicking around inshore, fishing very small pieces of reef: I was reminded
that every little bit helps, that each and every piece of rock, concrete or
steel that will sit still long enough to be colonized by growth will be used
by our reef fish--our tautog and sea bass..
Each and every bit counts... Indeed, altogether it counts a significant
amount, is carrying almost all recreational reef fishing effort.

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on April 20th:
"The weather certainly has not given us many breaks so far this spring, it
has by far been our biggest enemy on the days when we get out, or the days
that we just try to get out. The fishing continues to be good, we just
haven't been able to get away from the docks as much as we would like to go
catch them!
.....Friday was the only day that we managed to get out this past weekend
and the fishing was actually pretty decent on the Tog. With just a couple
handfuls of anglers we stayed pretty close to home fishing in the Mouth of
the Bay and had a fairly steady bite for the better part of the trip with
Tog up to about seven pounds. Water temperatures were still a little cool
even though they have been creeping up, so the bite was still light and
mostly on the Clam, but the majority of the anglers on board had no problem
getting their limit.
Reports have been coming in for a week now of more and more fish being
landed in different areas. There has been multiple good reports of both
Flounder and Stripers having been landed from the beach as well as from
small boats fishing the back bay's, inlets, and the canal. As the weather
improves and with the warmer temperatures we are seeing this week I
anticipate a lot more of these reports. I have also heard of the first
Bluefish being landed just off the beach and apparently there was some Tuna
out in the Baltimore and Washington Canyons with a shot of warm water that
had spun up from the Carolinas. I haven't had any updates on Drumfish since
the weekend but I'm sure some will eat a chunk of Clam this week, they are
most definitely around now and this fishery will take off any day now.
All-Day trips will depart the docks at 7:00 a.m. and we generally get back
in around 4:00. We will be anchoring over shipwrecks and artificial reefs
fishing for Tautog for about three more weeks before the spring Tog season
comes to a close. The outlook is very promising for some good Tog action up
until this closure and I expect to see some very nice fish landed.
If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf
or you would like to reserve space for a special trip or to book a private
charter please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA."

Thelma Dale V

Lewes Harbour Marina gives us the reports on 4/21:
"Fair numbers of striped bass showed up in the surf this past week. Fish
were caught at Cape Henlopen and along Broadkill Beach by shore casters
soaking cut herring, bunker, clam and bloodworm baits. Matt Wiedmann stopped
by Tuesday with a pair of nice rockfish taken at the Navy Jetties on
herring. Drew Stuchlik, Will Wiedmann and Fritz Geiger fished the beach near
Gordon's Pond during outgoing tide Tuesday.... On days boats were able to
get out on the Bay, anglers found tog along the Inner and Outer Walls. A
jighead tipped with a chunk of green crab worked. Joe Ryan got his limit of
tog at the Inner Wall. Tautog were also taken over Reef Sites 5, 6 and
7....Small boaters picked at flounder in the Lewes Canal. Water temps have
risen into the low 50's and action should improve daily. A few keeper
flatties came over the rail at the Cape Henlopen Pier during both day and
nighttime hours as as well. Flukers told of success using speck rigs and
other small jigs tipped with herring, shiners, minnows and Gulp! "
Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck,
inlet and trolling trips. He says: "Fin Chaser's 2011 season will begin on
April 22nd. We will be fishing for Tog & Cod until May 22nd at which time
Sea Bass will open and they will be added to our target. Shark Trips begin
in early June and Offshore Tuna Trips around the 20th of June. Reservations
have been very heavy, if you're considering a trip, you should reserve your
day ASAP."

James A. Donofrio, executive director of the Recreational Fishing
Alliance
has been actively working on the fisheries crisis. The RFA believes the
future of our fisheries is dependent on fixing the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery
Conservation and Management Act which has laid down strict time-frames that
do not take into account livelihoods and that a fishery is rebounding
steadily.

Maryland Fishing License
Anglers fishing in Ocean City will need to purchase a saltwater fishing
license. This license will cover both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastal
waters and surf of Ocean City and Assateague Island. Yes, this includes surf
fishing. If you already have a Chesapeake Bay Saltwater license you are good
to go! Anglers will be able to purchase the license online. The
license you want to choose is "Bay and Coastal Sport" You can either choose
a year-round or 7-day. The online site will add on a small convenience fee,
but so will the tackle stores
until the state sets us up. Unfortunately, this may not happen until
sometime this summer.
Oyster Bay Tackle will be glad to do your
fishing license for you, but we have to go to the same web site you would,
and use your credit card
to purchase a license for you until the state sets us up. SO, if you know
you are coming to Ocean City, it
would be to your advantage to get it done ahead of time. Right now, you can
also call a toll free number (1-800-918-2870)
or print and mail in an application (the
least expensive way to go!) If you know you are going to buy a boat license,
this would be a really good way to go. $50 and everyone on your boat can go
fishing without a license. You will get a personal license along with your
boat license, so you can go shore fishing as well. They will send you your
sticker for your boat in the mail.
Mail the application to their main office:
Maryland Dept. of Natural resources
Annapolis Service Center
P.O. Box 1869
1804 West Street, Suite 300
Annapolis, MD 21401
If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat
License, you don't have to buy a license, but you do have to register online. This
is free but cannot be done over the phone. (The state says it has no money
for a phone line.) So do it now. Do it anytime. But don't wait till you get
to Ocean City without a computer. Print out your number and keep an id with
you when you go fishing. It only takes a couple minutes. If you get in a
bind, we
can also do this for you at Oyster Bay Tackle.
Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license,
it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA licence
you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each
state can "try" to figure out "how many" fish are being caught in their own
individual states. (VA Free
Registry)
If you want to go fishing in Ocean City without a license, your choices will
be the "Oceanic Pier" or to go fishing on a party or charter boat. You can
also go crabbing and clamming in Ocean City without a license. Or you can
fish off your own private dock.
Senior citizens 65 and older. Cost is $5 if you have a MD driver's license
and are a resident of MD,
but if you are a non-resident there is no break. No break for boat licenses
either. $50 resident or non-resident,
plus around $3 for the internet fees.
