Ocean City Maryland & Assateague Island - Delaware Beaches - Ocean n Bay Fishing Report
By Sue Foster, Oyster Bay Tackle Shop, Ocean City MD - Fenwick Island DE
Nov 29th, 2010
Fishing Report by Sue Foster
Water Temperature (WTMP): 55.4°F
We had a few reports of nice fish in the surf including a huge 52-inch
Thanksgiving striper caught from the Fenwick Beach. Many anglers still got
skunked in the surf, while a few got lucky. You just had to be there when
the fish swam by. Stripers were caught on the Rt. 50 Bridge at night and by
day. Some "shorties" were reported from the Inlet rocks Thanksgiving
evening. Tautog were biting by day in their usual haunts. Stripers and big
blues were biting offshore within the three mile limit. Offshore saw tautog
and sea bass when the boats could get out.

Fenwick Tackle is now closed for the season. Thanks for a great year! See
ya in the spring!
We had more pictures sent in from the weekend before Thanksgiving.
Bobby Rehrig sent in his picture of a 37" Striper and 21 lbs. Fishing
Fenwick Beaches with Jim Thompson on 11/22/10. Jimmy Thompson caught a 36
inch Striper along with some big blues.
Those pictures are in our Delaware
Photo Gallery.
Anita Chandler was smiling ear to ear with her Thanksgiving catch. She came
into Fenwick Tackle to get her picture taken with a 44.2 ounce striper,
52-inches long, caught from the Fenwick State Park, DE on a chunk of cob
mullet on Thanksgiving morning. Her picture is in our Delaware
Photo Gallery.
Others tried and came up empty. I heard one story of a "knock-down" and a
demolished surf rig. Something bit though the wire leader and ate the whole
hook! Others told of a small fish with whiskers they caught in the surf at
night. These are "red hake" (sometimes called ling cod) and have no size
limit and are very good to eat.
If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a " sputnik
sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always carry a 3
1/2 or 5 1/2 ounce sputnik in my tackle box.
Assateague Beaches reported a few stripers and some reports of "red hake."
(Ling) Small whisked fish that are excellent to eat.
"Coop" posted on Thanksgiving " Fished today from the beachfront with my
family...windy in early am but turned into a great afternoon when the wind
layed down. I ended up with a 47" , 40 lber according to my boga, and my
nephew got a nice short. A very fun day. Hope everyone has a great
thanksgiving day!"
"Beachwalker" posted on Saturday: "Fished Delaware to AI, 20 hour, nothing
but the spine dogs. (Spiny dog sharks).
"Cfision" posted about Delaware Beaches on Saturday: "The last two days
fished PM outgoing to dead low .. No action (other than spiny dogs and
seagulls..."
As I told my customers.... It was VERY "hit or miss." You might catch one
or you might not. One thing about it. You can't catch if your bait's not in
the water!
Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

Anglers continued to fish for tautog this week. (The season ends in Maryland
Dec 1st, so Tuesday will be the last day to catch and keep a tautog till
January. Anglers did pretty good until the hard West wind blew straight in
their faces on Saturday.
The Rt. 50 Bridge has been especially good. Outgoing tide was the best. The
streets around 2nd and 4th Streets saw some decent catches. I went down
there and fished the bulkhead Tuesday and Wednesday. That was those two nice
"almost 70 degree days. Finally caught a keeper on Wednesday. I had a lot of
bites and several small to "almost legal" fish. It was warm and I had a
ball! Anglers in boats were still doing really good on tautog fishing near
the rocks at the Homer Gudelsky Park and around the Inlet.
Short stripers were reported from the rocks at the Inlet one evening with
bucktails and white worms. Anglers in boats were catching them in the Inlet
with eels, spot, or lures. Ron Fisher e-mailed in his report and picture
from last weekend: Sue: I caught a 31.5 inch 10.5lb. striper in the inlet
on Sunday. His picture is in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
Inshore Photos.
Anglers caught stripers from the Rt. 50 Bridge this week. Some nights were
better than others. And some are caught during the day! David Rippy of Ocean
Pines came into Oyster Bay on Saturday morning with a 33-inch 11-pound
striper he caught from the Rt. 50 Bridge at 7:30 A.M. on swimming shads tied
in tandem. His picture is in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
Inshore Photos.
Flounder season is now closed in Ocean City.
Nick of the Get Sum is doing
charters for tog, flounder and stripers.
Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports.
THURSDAY, November 25, 2010: Happy Thanksgiving! Seas were beautiful today.
I ventured down to the Sliver today. Marked some bait. Anglers fishing at
sunrise found bait and fish about a 1/4 mile off the beach. Went out to Isle
of Wight to do some bluefishing. Birds were busting out there during the
early morning. Big bluefish were mixed in with some stripers right on the
hump. Water temperature was 55-degrees. Special thanks to Josh Farr for
calling in anglers to the bite. Bob Purcell and his son Kyle boated 3
stripers by the Sliver. Everyone and their mother caught bluefish on Isle of
Wight Shoal today. Some flounder were even hooked by anglers jigging.
Unfortunately, season closed on November 22nd. Speaking of flounder, I heard
from a reliable source that we may get an 18.5-inch flounder next year with
a 4-fish creel and no closed season. Stay tuned.
WEDNESDAY, November 24, 2010: The wind is really honking this morning out
of the northwest. Seas were fishable out to around a mile to a mile and a
half. Birds were busting good outside the Inlet around 9:30 AM. Andy "El
Cheapski" Szypula landed 2 striped bass this afternoon while drifting live
spot in the Inlet between the red can buoy and the tip of the South Jetty.
The fish measured 34" (15 lbs.) and 36" (16.75 lbs.). Rumor has it that Max
Thumma outfished his dad, Benny and landed himself some nice stripers right
outside the Inlet.
TUESDAY, November 23, 2010: Rough seas today. Large schools of stripers and
bluefish were spotted a couple miles out from the 1st Lump. Anglers got into
bluefish 2.5 miles off the Pyramid, north of the OC Inlet.
In the "You've Gotta Be Kidding Me" section, the Coast Guard had their big
cutter AND 2 boats cruising between the Isle of Wight and Fenwick Shoals
today.
MONDAY, November 22, 2010: Nice day today. Ocean was a little sporty, but
fishable.
"Get Sum" finished their trip with 1 striper and their limit of tautog in
the box. The also had 2 throwback stripers. The striper was caught on live
spot in the Inlet (between the tip of the jetty and the 1st red buoy) during
the outgoing tide. The tautog were caught on green crabs at the South
Jetty.
Thank you Larry Jock for that nice report!!!
Clark from Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on the 22nd: "The run of big fish
on the beach continued through the weekend. Big blues and some short
stripers on mullet and bunker from the Cape down to 3R's. Some big blues
caught in the Inlet as well.

Thanks Clark!
Bill Sports Center (302-645-7654) reports on the 24th: "Stripers are
being weighed in from the Delaware Bay, the Valley, the 8's, and the
OverShoals Falls. Stripers have been reported from the beach in his neck of
the woods. Tautog are biting at Site 8 and 9 in the Delaware Bay. Site 10
and 11 have produced tautog in the ocean when boats can get out. Tautog have
been biting at the Inner and Outer Wall in the Delaware Bay.
(DEL tautog season remains open, but MD tautog season end 12/1.)

Anglers now need a DE Fishing License to fish, crab, and clam in DEL: The
state has published a very good
FAQ on the license requirement. Individual Delaware Fishing Licenses are
now available
online.
Stop into Fenwick Tackle and get your license. 302-539-7766.
Delaware anglers will also need a F.I.N. number every year, similar to a
hunting H.I.P. number. It is free, very simple to get, but necessary. DNREC
has e-mailed us how to get it! To obtain a F.I.N. number anglers may visit
www.delaware-fin.com, or call 800-432-9228, any time of day or night.
In Maryland, In Maryland, you do not need a license to fish in the ocean or
coastal bays until 2011, but you do need a free Registry number from NOAA if you are 16 and
older. Go to www.countmyfish.NOAA.gov to print your free number. You can
also call a toll free number and get it in a few minutes. 1-888-MRIP411
(1-888-674-7411). They will ask you for your name, address, and phone
number. It's not a large big deal, no one is fining anyone, but it will help
the states to count angler's catches more accurately.

Surprise Sea Bass
Ditto Tog
One Minute of Video
Going Fishing: Long Tog/Cbass - Sunday 11/28/10 - 11 hours - 6AM to 5PM -
$150.00 --- Still have spots for Saturday --- Opening Monday for a 10 hour
Tog/Cbass trip too - 6AM to 4PM - $125.00 - I think Monday will be the
calmest, a calm before the storm... Our tog season closes Tuesday night
until January 1st.
Ducks Unlimited realized that shooting regulations alone weren't working so
began a fantastic effort of digging ponds, educating farmers and buying
marsh. Opposite is the fabulous story of the Wild Turkey Federation. They
never had to replant forests; Their work bringing turkeys back to much of
America was by transplanting birds.
Hi All,
Turned my sea bass trip around Saturday. Waves just too derned tall,
steep--and, most importantly beyond the shallow waters of inlets & bars--too
close together. Wave period -time between crests- is the difference between
a gentle roll and a rib-snapping toss.
Anyway, we got back in and asked if anyone wanted to go toggin. A south-west
wind, wasn't too bad closer to shore..
Had tog coming pretty good when the wind laid out. Slipped offshore a bit
further. Did it again.
Here we could really catch some tog!
Except a nice sea bass came over the rail, and another..
And then a Really Nice ..rod & reel went over the rail. Rats!
I hate when that happens.
We catch 9 out of 10 rods back. This was #10.
$700.00?
Maybe. Guy dusted off, grabbed another stick and went back to work.
Had another rod incident this week too. Fellow's not-quite-as-custom but
better than Sponge-Bob rod gets caught-up pulling out of the slip. Wanted to
know why my mates weren't watching his rod..
Yeah, that didn't work out either.
Very nice day mid-week with BIRDS.
Mostly gannets; the really big splashes weren't from birds.
Great Scott, there were some big bluefish in there. Because we were fishing
in the No Recreational Fishing Zone that is supported by all the big
recreational groups, a place where honest men can become pirates; Because we
were outside the 3 mile line we had to throw back a few nice stripers caught
in with the chopper blues.
One client--expressing disbelief--thought that was the dumbest thing he'd
ever heard.
I've had some who were firm believers in "Possession is 9/10s of the law."
Perfect. I possess their ride home; They obey the law..
It's just awesome to behold -- The noise of air and water's life meeting --
Wonderful. Should be experienced by all.
Saw it further offshore a bit too, 'cept they made bigger splashes. Bluefins
I reckon.
Saw it again Tuesday 11/23.. Just stripers though. Ol' Murphy knew we had a
guy that wanted badly to smoke some bluefish.
Last Sunday's extra-long tog/cbass was a decent trip--maybe epic.. Try
another this week.
Big tog straightened a hook on the first drop. Caught a few 10 pounders
though.
Second drop we had a few more.
Then, on the 3rd drop, we had one go 14.
Biggest was 16 and a piece.
I like toggin. Wish it was always like that.
It ain't.
There were jumbo cbass coming in too.
Most stuck to their guns--either toggin or cbassing. One wise-guy couldn't
decide whether to catch cbass or cod.. Caught 3 cod - tagged a shorty. No
one else caught a cod.
Cbass & tog coming; some decide to fish for both.
Man with two watches never knows the time. Mediocre results from targeting
both.
Efforts well rewarded for targeting one or the other.
Pretty Fish.
I'd never caught cod in November. There's certainly evidence that cod
restoration is working -- especially from the tales of recent year's fishing
up north.
I think Massachusetts and the New England region in general have learned
Conservation is nothing without Habitat; Habitat is nothing without
Conservation.
That is, when they had codfish thick enough to draw fishing fleets from
across the Atlantic they enjoyed robust fisheries production. As
"improvements" came in the catching via trawl and ever-bigger & bigger boats
& nets, the habitat declined: That when they had Habitat, there was no
Conservation--None. Now, after decades of unsuccessful Conservation, they
realized they no longer had Habitat.
And took action.
It might even catch on. You know, that rocks matter.
The Massachusetts commercial black sea bass quota gets caught in under a
week I'm told. The recent sea bass recreational quota dilemmas--the greatest
of which may lie just around the corner--are always caused by Massachusetts
recreational anglers 'overharvesting'.
Yes, the recreational fishing catch data is rubbish -- but it does show
trends with some reliability.
The irony of this impending black sea bass fishery management disaster is
that if Massachusetts was doing a poor job of habitat management and
therefore black sea bass fishery production, If they hadn't created a
wonderful fishery for their stakeholders, their fishermen: Then--having not
restored the fishery to beyond historic norms in the region over which they
have some control, perhaps also due in part to a habitat vacuum of other
species' decline; If there had been no success at sea bass restoration in
Massachusetts, their anglers could not have caught the entire coastwide
recreational sea bass quota.
In this scenario of failed restoration, the quota trigger would remain
untouched--the fish would not have been caught. Management would then be
Loosening coastwide regulations, Increasing the season, Decreasing the size
limit, Even increasing the bag limit..
A perfectly true statement: If it were just as screwed-up as ever,
everything would be fine..
There's no possibility clients fishing from my boat will catch any of
Massachusetts' sea bass off Maryland's coast: Ever.
Yet we'll have to fight hard to keep any part of our sea bass fishery open
in 2011 because Massachusetts anglers enjoyed their state's restoration
efforts.
Need a little help here..

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on the 23rd:
......I had almost forgotten what it was like to actually fish six out
of the last seven days but thanks to a well deserved and most certainly
appreciated break in the weather that is exactly what we have done this past
week here at the Wharf, and the results have been what I would call "not too
shabby." While I have spent just about all of my time fishing for the Tog,
we have also had boats out fishing for the Stripers and both of our special
trips for Sea Bass got off without too much of a hitch over the weekend with
fair and even excellent results.
Capt. H.D. had another couple trips for the Sea Bass over the weekend
however the moon didn't seem to make that much of a difference with the Sea
Bass. While Saturdays trip started out pretty rough with the southwest winds
blowing strong out of the gate, the Seas did calm and the fishing was
described as just ok. No limits on this trip but top hooks into the mid to
upper teens with tasty Bass. They also saw four nice Codfish, a few Porgies
and a few Slammer Blues. There was plenty of action with small fish also.
Sunday was the much better day, Capt. H was off again and this time the end
results were quite good. Where Saturdays trip was described to me as "just
ok" Sundays trip was described to me by several on board as "Fantastic!"
Limit catches for everyone on board and back to the dock just before dark.
It was no doubt a good trip.
Striper fishing in the Mouth of the Bay has been seeing it's moments however
unless you are the lucky one that has the 40 inch Rockfish on the end of
your fishing line or in your cooler at the end of the day you could think it
a little boring! There is without a doubt some very nice Rockfish around
right now and they are coming into the docks in what I would call fair
numbers regularly, however the bulk of these fish continue to pass us by
well outside of the three mile line where we are allowed to legally land
these quality fish. Without the big schools working in our range oftentimes
we are just drifting the rips and waiting for the bites. I ran the Striper
Boat yesterday and we had one of the better days landing ten Stripers and a
big Blue for our efforts. These fish must have really been thick because I
even caught a couple of them! For a instant it seemed so much easier than
trying to catch a Tog!
As long as the weather continues to cooperate we should be able to see good
success with our trips. I will be off for Thanksgiving and back at it on
Friday fishing for the Tog. After Monday I will be dropping back to just
four days a week fishing on Friday, Saturday, Sunday's and Monday's wreck
fishing fro Tog up until the middle of December when we will shut down for a
while. We will continue to try and run a Striper trip daily also until the
middle of December. If the weather is decent we will likely be able to
continue getting out in the middle of the week Striper fishing even if we
just have a few folks. We also have several more special trips lined up for
the Sea Bass up until the end of the year when Sea Bass season closes.
If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf
or you would like to reserve space for a special trip or to book a private
charter please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Big Stripers are in Delaware Bay. Lewes Harbour Marina gives us the Delaware Bay
Fishing Report and tells us of the good surf bite up North that happened
before the Thanksgiving weekend. Unfortunately, the bite wasn't so good
during the weekend.
November 26,2010 - Blues and Bass in the Surf
Surfcasters had been waiting for a decent shot of stripers and bluefish from
the beach, and they got their wish early in the week. Good numbers of
chopper blues and some nice rockfish were caught at Cape Henlopen. The
stretch between the Point and Gordon's Pond was popular, with the area
around the jetties at Herring Point being pretty productive. Fresh bunker
was the bait of choice, but it has been hard to come by. When fresh couldn't
be found, anglers still caught with frozen menhaden and mullet. Beaches to
the south gave up fish too. Blues and rock were caught near the old Coast
Guard Station and at 3R's Road. Some of the nice stripers pulled from the
wash included Sharon Brendle's 18.2 pounder, Jim Wahl's 20 pounder and Judah
Lynam's 25 pound citation rockfish. Boat fishermen had success with stripers
when weather allowed them to get on the water. It has been a very windy
Fall. Structure across the mouth of the Bay continued to yield bass. Fish
were taken at the 8 Buoys Triangle, in the Valley, and at Overfalls. Bass
were also hooked up the Bay on Brown Shoal. In recent days, there was a good
bite on Prissy Wicks Shoal, likely indicative that more migratory stripers
are hooking into the Bay around Cape May, staging there on their way south.
And, with the activity in the surf, it's no surprise that stripers and blues
were caught by boaters on Hen and Chickens Shoal. Trolling Stretch 25 plugs
remained an effective approach.l....
......
Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck and
trolling trips. Here's some of his reports from this week to give you a
taste of what Capt Dan has to offer.
11/19/10 Five hour birthday trip with a party of three looking for some
Striper's. Spent the first few hours looking all over but only had one bite.
Birthday boy wanted to set-up and do some Toggin' but the other guys seemed
more interested in drifting for Striper's. With about an hour let in the day
the other guys gave in and we anchored-up at the south jetty and set out the
crabs. A few fish, keepers and throwbacks but fairly slow. Back in the slip
with three Tog in the box.
11/20/10 Four hour Inlet Trip looking for the ever elusive Striper's. Made
countless drifts with this father & son's crew from NJ but couldn't buy a
bite. Lots of boats looking for these buggers and one one fish caught that I
know of,,,,poor!!!
11/21/10 Five hour Tog trip at the Inlet with a crew from Kingsville, MD.
Tide was perfect and the bite was on, keepers and throwbacks. Sometime
around 10:00 am the tide turned and started going out, not the best for Tog
fishing inside the jetty. Think we only had two fish from 10:00 to 11:00 am,
both were throwbacks. Pulled anchor a little early to allow me time to clean
the nine in the box and for the crew to get back north for a southern style
fish fry.
