Ocean City Maryland & Assateague Island - Delaware Beaches - Ocean n Bay Fishing Report
By Sue Foster, Oyster Bay Tackle Shop, Ocean City MD - Fenwick Island DE

Nov 1st, 2010

Fishing Report by Sue Foster

Water Temperature (WTMP): 61.9°F

Another good week on tautog fishing. Anglers in Ocean City will be allowed
to keep 4 fish during the month of November. In DEL, anglers can keep 10.
Green crabs and sand fleas are the prefered baits. Surf fishing was slow. A
few snapper blues were biting in the surf along with a few sharks and
skates. We're all waiting for more stripers and bigger blues. Anglers are
happy to have sea bass back open effective Nov 1st. Some striper action on
the Rt. 50 Bridge at night. Some stripers were reported at the Rt. 90 Bridge
and there have been some sitings just offshore of Ocean City beaches but not
much "catching". Stripers have begun their fall migration and anglers in the
Delaware Bay are catching.

Surf fishing was slow this week, mainly because of the windy weather. The
wind blew from the South hard three straight days. Plus beach replenishment
is going on, stirring up the water. I had a few reports of small (really
small) snapper blues. Last week, we had a couple striper reports, but we
didn't hear much of anything this week except for the couple small bluefish,
some sharks, and skates.
If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a " sputnik
sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always carry a 3
1/2 or 4 ounce sputnik in my tackle box.

I didn't see any good posts from the Assateague surf. Some got skunked.
Others caught sharks and skates.

"Chip281" posted on Stripers Online on Saturday: "Went out today to try for
some blues, came out with a dog fish and a skate. Had a few hits I think
were blues because I got half a mullet back each time just missing the hook.
Good day on the beach otherwise."

At least one striper was caught this past week on Assateague.

Jim Larkin e-mailed in on Wednesday:

"Thank you for your part in helping me pull in my first 28 inch striper at
Assateague. It was your recommendation of finger mullet and the right
tackle that did the trick."

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

Anglers did good on tautog this past week. Green crabs or sand fleas were
the ticket. Be sure to measure your tautogs carefully. Anglers in MD are
allowed to keep 4 fish now in MD, 14-inches or larger until Dec 1st. After
Dec 1st, tautog will be closed in MD. Tautog are biting from the Inlets, the
Oceanic Pier, Rt. 50 Bridge and the bulkhead along 2nd through 4th Streets.
One angler said he caught over 150 tautog last week but only had one keeper.

I tried tautog fishing two days last week. On Monday, I went to the bulkhead
and got a bite every time I went down. Caught lots of tautog but no keepers.
Then I went up on the Rt. 50 Bridge and the tautogs were running larger. I
finally got a keeper and saw several keepers caught. On Tuesday I tried the
Bridge again and the bite was much slower. I finally got a keeper and again,
saw some nice ones caught. (Tautog fishing can sometimes be quite
humbling....)
Wednesday was a washout for everyone fishing. It was just too windy!

I talked to a customer that has been fishing Indian River and he saw some
really big tautog come up over the rail. He also noted that the boats at the
Inner and Outer Wall in the Delaware Bay have had good tautog catches.
Friends of his went out in a boat and caught several nice stripers in the
bottom of the 60 foot slough.

Anglers fishing the Route 50 Bridge are catching some stripers. Dirty water
has slowed it up somewhat, but cooling temperatures should get the "bite"
going. Swimming Shad lures in 5 or 6 inch have been popular. Mullet, White,
and Trout colors have been popular. Anglers are also using Fin-S Fish and
Fin-S Shad soft bodies on a 3/4 or 1 oz lead head.

Anglers in boats are picking up some stripers with live spot or eels around
the Rt. 50 Bridge on the high water.

Flounder season is still open in Ocean City but I didn't get any reports
this week on flounder.

Capt. Bobby Gower of the " Bay Bee
reports slow picking on the flounder front this weekend. He went out on
Sunday and only had three throw backs. One was caught in the Thorofare, one
in the inlet, and one around the Bridge. Capt Gower says the Bay Bee will
start running striper trips Friday through Sunday. (This Sat is booked.)

Nick of the Get Sum is doing
charters for tog, flounder and stripers.

Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports. "Saturday, October 30, 2010: Another windy day today.

"Get Sum" had their limit of 8 tautog today, all caught at the South Jetty
on green crabs.

"Morning Star" ventured out and returned with black drum and tautog. They
also tagged 3 sheepshead. All caught on green crabs.

Rumor has it that stripers were spotted 1 mile straight out from the OC
Inlet.

Friday, October 29,2010: Capt.Willie Zimmerman on the "Playmate" called
today to report that he was marking stripers just north of Sea Colony. He
didn't get any to snap but his charter did land an 11lb. Bluefish. A
commercial fisherman did confirm that stripers have been in that area under
diving birds.

I spent a couple hours trolling around the lumps off of 28th Street. I
marked a lot of bait 1 mile off the beach but didn't hook into any bluefish
or stripers.

Reports came in about short stripers around the Rt. 90 Bridge.

Stripers were caught last night by anglers drifting eels in the inlet.

Sea bass season reopens on Nov. 1st. Capt. Monty on the "morning Star"
called to say that he has some open spots on the rail. Capt. Monty said he
wouldn't be surprised if they hook a few flounder during the trips.

Larry Jock tells us good news on the flounder front: MD DNR RELEASES "WAVE
4" FLOUNDER DATA-

October 27, 2010 - The Maryland Department of Natural Services -Fisheries
Service released their Wave 4 flounder catch statistics. This "Wave" covers
months July and August. During that time period, according to DNR surveys,
Maryland anglers caught 14,000 summer flounder, bringing the yearly total to
26,000 flounder caught. This number, heading into the fall months, is well
under our target figure of 75,000 flounder allowed to be caught between
January and December 2010. Wave 5 numbers, covering September and October,
will not be available until mid-December.

J.J. from the Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) reports keeper tautog from the end
of the pier. Not quite as many as last week because of the windy weather and
less patrons since it got colder. There were also some small flounder caught
but no big ones! J.J. wants everyone to know that when you come to the
pier, go to the Oceanic Motel and park, then come buy your ticket and he
will give you a pass for your car. There is also a big municipal pay lot
about a block away from the pier. Call J.J. at 410-289-2602 for parking
details.

Clark from Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on the 26th: " Fall fishing
season is just getting started and the bigger fish are beginning to bite.
Terry Ganey, Bowie MD, weighed two nice stripers taken on Stretch 30's just
outside the Inlet on Sunday. One weighed 27 pounds while the other tipped
the scales at 33lbs 8oz. Nice fish!!The daytime bite is improving in the
Inlet with a few more keepers in the mix but it is still mostly shorts until
the sun goes down. Some bigger fish have been landed after dark. The daytime
bite is on light colored swim shads and white bucktails tipped with a white
worm. Yellow worms are working if the water gets dirty. The long liners have
been using dark flies during the day.The nightime bite is on the dark plugs,
swimshads and live eels. Plenty of tog along the rocks and railing. The
surf has been slow as the big blues are not here yet"

Thanks Clark!

Bill Sports Center (302-645-7654) reports good really good tautog up by the
Inner and Outer Wall in the Delaware Bay. Big stripers have started running
in the Delaware Bay. Stripers, bluefish and tautog are biting at the Indian
River Inlet. Cape Henelopen Pier has had blues, spot, and croaker.

Anglers now need a DE Fishing License to fish, crab, and clam in DEL: The
state has published a very good
FAQ on the license requirement. Individual Delaware Fishing Licenses are
now available
online.
Stop into Fenwick Tackle and get your license. 302-539-7766.

Delaware anglers will also need a F.I.N. number every year, similar to a
hunting H.I.P. number. It is free, very simple to get, but necessary. DNREC
has e-mailed us how to get it! To obtain a F.I.N. number anglers may visit
www.delaware-fin.com, or call 800-432-9228, any time of day or night.

In Maryland, In Maryland, you do not need a license to fish in the ocean or
coastal bays until 2011, but you do need a free Registry number from NOAA if you are 16 and
older. Go to www.countmyfish.NOAA.gov to print your free number. You can
also call a toll free number and get it in a few minutes. 1-888-MRIP411
(1-888-674-7411). They will ask you for your name, address, and phone
number. It's not a large big deal, no one is fining anyone, but it will help
the states to count angler's catches more accurately.

Capt. Monty on the "
Morning Star" works hard to catch fish for his customers. Here's his
report from the 25th of Oct.
"Hi All,
Mixed up week. Had hundreds of small, throw-back sea trout Wednesday along
with a few undersized flounder, followed by some fine toggin and even a few
sheepshead. The biggest tog that day was 14 1/2 pounds on an artificial reef
I watched go down-- A reef many of you likely contributed to in the
reef-raffle or via Ocean City Reef Foundation sponsorship.
That dandy--It really was a jumbo, was not representative of what we're
catching. Caught right next to one of the most dedicated toggers I know, it
may simply have been 'ol Murphy up to no good.
Sunday I patched together an unannounced inshore tog trip. One super togger,
another fellow who worked deck in the Delaware Bay trout hey-day, mate Ritch
& I stood to give the rest a hard lesson in toggin.
Hubris rewarded as it might be -- The other passengers caught all the
keepers with the old-timer's grandson high-hook.
Skill - Goose Egg.
Enthusiasm the trophy.

....

Sea bass reopen on November 1st, a Monday. I am confident that despite high
throwback ratios we'll be looking good.

I have everyday of the first week of November open to sea bass trip
reservations; Now opening the 12th, 13th & 14th too.
I'm leaving some days closed to revisit the deep-deep should there be a
weather window.. Or go long sea bass.
......

A small non-profit, the Ocean City Reef Foundation puts down what reef it
can afford. In the previous year, having the State's blessing &
encouragement, we reefed 176 stainless steel subway cars, perhaps our
biggest project ever.
Last Monday Capt. Danny from the Fin Chaser, myself & mate Mike, and the
crew from Tow Boat US, Ocean City went to work on a 77 foot steel trawler
that's destined for Susan Power's Reef at the Jackspot. We filled 4
"bagsters." (very clever idea, just a big nylon bag with heavy duty lifting
straps instead of a steel dumpster) We'll have to fill several more, double
check all her tanks & bilges, remove all the rest of her wiring, get the
winches off and assorted rigging, torch holes to better water flow, then
take off the outriggers to increase stability for towing.
My kingdom that an Ace Warthog pilot would sink her, a CG Cutter's
bow-mounted 50 cal stitches her waterline, a SEAL Team might use her as an
exercise: That our Armed Forces discover the best live-fire exercises build
reef..

We also have a 50 foot steel boat coming. Already cleaned; I hope to lay a
pallet of any odd block in her hull and overshoot it with a yard or so of
concrete. Jeff Bauer of Eastern Shore Brick has been a major supporter of
past reef projects, perhaps he'll have some odd block around..

A smooth piece of rock or steel creates very little reef. It is the
ruggedness--rugosity if you prefer--where reef starts to become productive.
Those holes, nooks & crannies, the places where there is shelter from
current, even the most exposed edges: All become far more productive when
growth covers, When the mussels, whips and corals that form our reef ecology
are well-grown in.

This reef unit, the 50 footer, will become the first piece of many for the
Jimmy Jackson Reef.
Though he passed away young, Jimmy will be forgotten by no one who knew him.
Fifteen years ago he asked me to show him how to make a duck decoy A couple
days later he brought a bird by many times better than my 800th..
His assistance with major maintenance on the Morning Star was vital.
Billfish and tuna in many seas, Jimmy also greatly enjoyed toggin for the
challenge.
I'm telling you, Jimmy's Tog Town is going to be world class.
Bet on it.

Capt Monty adds on 10/31: Hi All,
Sea bass reopen Monday, November 1st.
Better than last year's total closure: Enjoy, but do not think all is well.
November is when our cbass are moving offshore, fattening-up for winter In
the bad old "good old days" high man would have 200 fish in a day's fishing
come November.
Today's legal creel limit of 25 will have to do. So long as the release
ratio stays below 7 to 1 you can get a creel limit--Catch 175 fish for 25
keepers.
Fortunately, with cooler temps and the right fish-hooks, release mortality
is practically zero.
..unless the bluefish are thick.

I have everyday open to sea bass trip reservations the first week of season
and the following weekend -- the 1st through the 6th & the 12th, 13th &
14th.
I need to go back into the deep for some video work, need to find a calm
patch of weather when I don't have a regular trip booked: I'll open more sea
bass trips, lots more; Just not yet.

Though tautog in Maryland go from 2 fish to a 4 fish limit on November 1st
too, I intend to resume toggin' come January.
That two fish creel-limit can be traced directly to the official catch
estimate of September/October 2007 when 44,120 tautog are estimated to have
been boxed-up in Ocean City's coolers. Interestingly, if you add up the
estimates from 2000 to 2009 --but exclude 2007-- you get 57,743 tautog
caught and cooked. The other 8 years total effort combined is only 13,623
fish more than the one bad 2007 estimate.
In the MD total of all those fish for the 9 year period the party/charter
catch is thought to be just under a thousand..

Sure smells funny -- but will, regardless, impact regulations for years to
come: Especially if another bad estimate comes directly on its heels.
This is exactly how sea bass came to be closed--but in larger scale,
involving several states' estimates.

It's being fixed.
That whole, huge program--MRIP, which stands for MRFSS Rest In Peace or
Marine Recreational Information Program depending on your vantage point: The
"Angler Registry" is all about fixing recreational catch estimates. Millions
& millions have been spent to resolve a well-known problem, the problem of
horrid data sets impacting fisheries decisions.

Everyone in fisheries knows the estimates are a huge problem, knows
meaningless data forces all involved to fight with all their determination,
swinging sword & mace through nothingness, to attack or defend management
decisions based on data a ten year old would question
Lines manned, battle joined: Thrust, "Your Data's Bad!" - Parry, "It's The
Best Data Available!"
While businesses fold, the real work languishes.

There are a handful of people at the top who can call "Time!"

Our era of error needs to end.
Yes, there has to be sensible regulation based on catch, but if a catch
estimate doesn't make sense then just make sensible regulation.
The people at the top need to put a hold on our old estimate system's final
data sets, need to hit pause while the new system, MRIP, comes on line...."

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on the 26th:

Finally a little stretch of decent weather and some very good Tautog
fishing to go along with it! We actually have had more decent weather over
the past seven days than we have had bad weather for a change, and we were
able to take full advantage of it on a few different occasions allowing us
to have seen some of the best Tog fishing so far for the fall season.
Water temperatures continue to dip slightly hanging right in there around 61
degrees in the Bay and in the mouth of the Bay. Temps are just a little
warmer a little further away from the coast. There has been just enough drop
that I can officially say that there are now some Stripers on the move and
some very nice fish were taken hook and line in the Delaware Bay over the
weekend. It shouldn't be long at all before we will be able to catch some of
these beasts in the rips around the mouth of the Bay. So far most of the
Stripers have all been large and most have fallen to a chunk of fresh Bunker
while anchored. There are reports of several large schools of both Blues and
Stripers about fifty miles north of us along the beachfront and we should
start to see this migration in our area very soon. Perhaps with the passing
of the next cold front. We will start sailing for Stripers regularly
starting this weekend.

Sea Bass season will reopen on November 1st and we will be ready for them.
Our Sea Bassing had really just started to get good when we had the wool
pulled out from under our feet with the mandatory closure by National Marine
Fisheries. Once the season reopens we will continue to fish for the Bass up
until the end of December. With my regular all day trips I look to fish for
the Bass any decent day with enough people to make the run to the Bass
grounds. In the event that we just have a few folks show up on any given day
or it is too rough to make it offshore, we always have the option to fish
close to home for the Tautog. Both the Tog fishing and the Sea Bass fishing
should be good up until the bitter end this year.

I am planning on running seven days a week with the regular all-day trips up
until December when we will drop back to just Friday through Mondays.
All-Day trips will depart the docks at 7:00 a.m. and we return around 4:00
p.m. We will be wreck fishing for either Sea Bass or Tog every day and all
bait is supplied. We will also have several Special Trips on the schedule
running specifically for the Sea Bass and will also have a few Long-Range
trips for a mix of Bass and Tilefish. These dates should be posted on our
special trip link from the home page very soon. Reservations are required in
advance for all special trips and space will be limited. Striper trips will
start sailing this weekend and are scheduled to depart the docks at 8:00
a.m. and will also return to the docks at around 4:00 p.m.

If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf
or you would like to book a private charter or reserve space on a special

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck and
trolling trips. Here's some of his reports from this week to give you a
taste of what Capt Dan has to offer.

10/21/10 Out with a party of two who didn't care what they caught just as
long as they could fish "their style" of fishing. The anchor came tight and
Mr. Ho broke out the jigs. All kinds of jigs, all kinds of sizes, shapes and
colors. Unfortunately, our Tog, Triggerfish and Sea Bass weren't impressed.
Mr. Ho's friend, a newbie to saltwater fishing, was using our traditional
bait and doing quite well on small Sea Bass with a few Tog mixed in. For the
next five hours the jigging continued. Frankly, I can't believe his arm
didn't fall off, I was exhausted just watching all this. With 30 minutes
left in the day and realizing defeat, Mr. Ho asked to go back. Back in the
slip with three Sea Bass and one jumbo Triggerfish which I was told is
called a "Vietnam Fish" in Korea.

10/22/10 Rescheduled due to rough conditions.

10/24/10 A five hour trip with party of two, one of which is a Brigadier
General in the Italian Air Force and flies the super fast Tornado fighter
jets, his call sign "Batman". Conditions were a little choppier that called
for, not the best for Toggin'. Bite was spotty, just about the time you
thought it was going to go wide open, they would shut down for ten minutes.
Surprise of the day was a 12 lb. Black Drum, a very under-rated sport fish
and great on the table too. Spent the day pickin' at the shorts trying to
find some size. With 30 minutes left in the day the bite turned on and we
managed to add two more Tog and one very nice 8 lb. Sheepshead to the box.
