Ocean City Maryland & Assateague Island - Delaware Beaches - Ocean n Bay Fishing Report
By Sue Foster, Oyster Bay Tackle Shop, Ocean City MD - Fenwick Island DE

    Nov 15th, 2010

    Fishing Report by Sue Foster

    Water Temperature (WTMP): 56.8°F

Tautog fishing was AGAIN the predominate Ocean City fish this week. The surf
was very rough with large waves crashing on shore. Extreme high tides made
conditions worse. Anglers during the week reported only sharks and skates.
The Rt. 50 Bridge is seeing stripers at night. Lots of "shorts" with a few
keepers. Anglers in boats are also have luck fishing near the Bridge with
live spot and live eels. Anglers that made it offshore on Sunday finally got
into some blue and striper action. Delaware Bay is seeing good catches of
stripers. Indian River had a couple really good days of striper fishing and
    the usual tautog action.

Surf fishing was extremely slow this week, mainly because of the windy
weather. 10 ounce sinkers were rolling down the beach. Stripers should be
here any time, but not much is happening. One group fished the Ocean Pier
and caught nothing. Another angler said he fished hard at 3 R's on Thursday
and caught sharks and dogfish and had one cut off that he thinks was a
bluefish. Saw one post where an angler caught and released a 26-inch striper
from the beach in Fenwick Island. Come on surf fish! It was this time last
year we saw some striper action in Ocean City from the surf.
If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a " sputnik
sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always carry a 3
1/2 or 5 1/2 ounce sputnik in my tackle box.

Assateague Beaches were closed to 4-wheel Driving again this weekend. At
least one striper was caught before the weekend:

"Possum" posted on Stripers Online Thursday:

"Got on the beach before it washed over and closed...
    .... big tide today!
The Ranger came down this afternoon in his souped up golf cart and told us
that the beach was closed and to get off at low tide and to be careful
    leaving...
not long after he stopped by I got a nice 42"er...(striper)"

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
    Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

Anglers mostly fished for tautog this week. The Rt. 50 Bridge has been
especially good. The streets around 2nd and 4th Streets were flooded out on
the high tides. Anglers in boats are doing really good on tautog fishing
near the rocks at the Homer Gudelsky Park. Mike Herbert e-mailed in his
report and picture: "First day we caught 1 keeper, day 2 we caught 4 keepers
and today we caught 6 keepers. Over the 3 days we had over 100 throw backs,
all in all it was a good trip. His picture is in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
    Inshore Photos.

Fred Kacher from Oakton Va caught some nice keeper Taug at the Bulkhead on
11/10/10. Fred was using Green Crabs when he snatched up 3 keepers from 16
up to 19 inches. His picture is in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
    Inshore Photos.

Flounder season is still open in Ocean City until the 22nd but we didn't
    hear much this week.

Capt. Bobby Gower of the " Bay Bee
reports that the Bay Bee will be striper fishing on weekends. Call the
Marina to make reservations for Sat and Sun for striper fishing.
    410-213-1121.

Nick of the Get Sum is doing
charters for tog, flounder and stripers.

    Larry Jock of the Coastal
    Fisherman reports.

SUNDAY, November 14, 2010: Beautiful day today. Bay was calm. Ocean had
7-foot swell, every 12 seconds. Definitely fishable. Those chasing bluefish
on Fenwick and Isle of Wight shoals had to contend with those pesky
stripers, especially on Fenwick. Gunnar Reynolds caught a 9 lb. bluefish on
Isle of Wight Shoal. Gunnar caught it on a Stretch 25. Gary Sappington, Doug
Curtiss and Marc Slavin returned with 6 stripers, up to 40-inches. All of
the fish were caught on trolled mojos on shoals north of the Inlet. Water
temperature was reported at 53-56 degrees.
Larry Jock, Sr. caught 5 stripers, with one 32-inch keeper, while trolling
Storm lures in the bay behind Assateague Island.

SATURDAY, November 13, 2010: Weather is starting to settle down. Chuck
Wenzel caught a 33.5-inch striper in the Thorofare on a live spot."Get Sum"
had a nice catch of tautog, caught south of Gudelsky Park. They also hooked
    a few throwback stripers.

"THURSDAY, November 11, 2010: Very windy today. Rough seas. I did speak
with Joe Morris at Lewes Harbour Marina in Lewes, DE. Unfortunately, the
windy weather kept most anglers at the dock since Saturday, but Joe said a
few brave souls ventured out today and are "wailing" on the stripers at
Overfall Shoals and at the 8's, both at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Joe
said that although the push of big fish happened weeks ago, the big schools
of fish are just showing up now.

WEDNESDAY, November 10, 2010: Striper bite in the bay was off today. Weather
was still pretty windy. Calmed down at night, and I was able to slip out and
do some drifting north of the Rt. 50 Bridge. Had 3 pulls. One shook loose
right after hook-up. One jumped off at the boat and one was landed. Measured
27.5-inches. All on eels. Water temp in the bay was 55.4-degrees. I spoke to
Capt. Perry Romig on the "Topless" out of Greenbackville, VA and he said the
stripers haven't arrived down there yet. I also read Julie Ball's Virginia
Beach report and it looks like not much is happening there either. Bite is
strong off central Jersey, so a good amount of fish are heading our way.

TUESDAY, November 9, 2010: Another windy day. Some stripers are being caught
in the bay, but I wouldn't say it is "on fire".Kevin Weber landed himself a
nice 43-inch, 32.5 lb. striper on a live eel near the Rt. 50 Bridge.

MONDAY, November 8, 2010: Very, very windy today. Didn't see anyone fishing
except for the folks on the Rt. 50 Bridge. When I was crossing the bridge, I
saw a few anglers tossing tautog back over the rail, so it looks like the
tautog bite around the bridge is still very good."

Thank you Larry Jock for that nice report!!!

J.J. from the Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) reports tautog was the only action
this weekend. It was a slower because of the extreme tides. Hopefully next
weekend will be better. Green crabs or sand fleas are the baits for
tautog. The Pier is now open Friday, Sat, and Sun. Closed during the week.
J.J. wants everyone to know that when you come to the pier, go to the
Oceanic Motel and park, then come buy your ticket and he will give you a
pass for your car. There is also a big municipal pay lot about a block away
from the pier. Call J.J. at 410-289-2602 for parking details.

Clark from Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on the 12th: " A quick update
going in to the weekend. Striper fishing has been fantastic over the last
week. Numerous reports coming in about 35-40 inch fish in the inlet.

Also had a report from the Cape last weekend - The rockfish were on the
beach today at the point. Caught 8 total. 7 were keepers but had to release
    5. The two I kept were 38" and 34". All caught on peanut bunker. The guy
fishing next two me caught a 44". Also saw a nice bluefish taken in the 10lb
    range."

    Thanks Clark!

Bill Sports Center (302-645-7654) reports on the 11th: "Wind has kept boats
at the dock more days than not. When anglers do get out, stripers and tautog
are biting really good in the Delaware Bay.

E-mail Sue Foster at: Oyster Bay

welcome! (Please send me a real picture and not a link to a "Kodak moment!")
E-mail me your name and where you are from so we
can put you in our weekly fish reports and/or Gallery!

Anglers now need a DE Fishing License to fish, crab, and clam in DEL: The
state has published a very good
FAQ on the license requirement. Individual Delaware Fishing Licenses are
    now available
    online.
Stop into Fenwick Tackle and get your license. 302-539-7766.

Delaware anglers will also need a F.I.N. number every year, similar to a
hunting H.I.P. number. It is free, very simple to get, but necessary. DNREC
has e-mailed us how to get it! To obtain a F.I.N. number anglers may visit
www.delaware-fin.com, or call 800-432-9228, any time of day or night.

In Maryland, In Maryland, you do not need a license to fish in the ocean or
coastal bays until 2011, but you do need a free Registry number from NOAA if you are 16 and
older. Go to www.countmyfish.NOAA.gov to print your free number. You can
also call a toll free number and get it in a few minutes. 1-888-MRIP411
(1-888-674-7411). They will ask you for your name, address, and phone
number. It's not a large big deal, no one is fining anyone, but it will help
the states to count angler's catches more accurately.

opening everything.. Yet. Intend to fish into December then sail by email
announcement only for tog in January & February.

    Hi All,
Got a bunch of days in this week. Saw some great fishing.
I'd have wagered on sea bass being the whole story. However, early in the
week tog were super aggressive. Despite sea bass attacking falling crab
baits, tog were occasionally getting their shot too."

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
    on the 9th:

The fishing has been good, early last week and then again on Saturday,
we saw Sea Bass action as good as you could ask for; constant action,
several very nice sized fish, and folks landing limit or near limit catches.
Tog fishing up until the weekend with the wind and hard running tides
associated with the back side of the moon, has also been outstanding with
good numbers and some real nice sized fish coming in. The Stripers are also
biting now with the most consistency so far this fall season with trophy
sized fish being landed on both sides of the Delaware Bay as well as out
front between the two Capes in the well known "rips" in the mouth of the
    Bay.

Capt. H.D. ran the special Sea Bass trip out to the twenty mile wrecks on
Saturday and even though the Ocean was best described as a big washing
machine with the heavy swells and moderate northeast winds chopping up on
the surface, the fishing was outstanding with the majority of his small
group landing a limit of nice sized Sea Bass. They also saw a few Blues and
even caught a lonely lost Codfish! This was a special 10-hour trip and other
than the weather this trip was a big success. There are several more of
these trips on the schedule for those that want a guaranteed Sea Bass
fishing trip. I also expect more regular Full-Day trips for the Bass these
next few weeks if we can ever get this weather to give us a break. As the
season progresses these fish will ultimately push further offshore making an
extended journey one of the best options for the Bass.

I am going to continue trying to sail seven days a week with the regular
All-Day trips until December when we will shorten the schedule. The way the
weather has been and the way everyone seems to be paying close attention to
the forecast this is our best chance to get out on a decent day. Any nice
day with a decent amount of folks on board we will likely sail offshore for
the Bass. Any day with just a few folks or if the weather is iffy we will
stay close to shore fishing for the Tautog. All trips will be anchor fishing
over wrecks and bait is supplied. All- Day trips depart the docks at 7:00
a.m. and we generally get back in around 4:00. As long as we can get a break
in the weather we will see some good fishing! Striper trips (weather
permitting) depart the dock at 8:00 a.m. and they also will return at around
    4:00 p.m.

If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf
or you would like to book a private charter or reserve space on a special
trip, please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Big Stripers are in Delaware Bay. Lewes Harbour Marina gives us the Delaware Bay
    Fishing Report

    November 12, 2010 - Relentless Northeast Wind
Strong winds prevented most boaters from leaving the dock in recent days,
but a few crews braved rough seas at the Bay mouth yesterday and were
rewarded with some nice stripers. Patrons on the Angler pulled in 11 bass
while eeling at 8B and Overfalls. Robert Dixon decked a 24.6 pound linesider
on the Pirate King. Fishermen on the Indian fought 8 big rockfish, 5 of
which were citation sized. Jim Cregan caught a 21.1 pounder, Noel Rodriguez
reeled in a 21.8 pounder, Jeff Hertzog had a 24.3, Paul Hertzog landed a
25.5 pounder, and Ed Dobos captured a 27.6 pound rock. Earlier in the week,
trollers got into some quality stripers while pulling Stretch 25+ plugs at
Overfalls Shoal. Mike and Mason Newsham pulled plugs during outgoing tide
for a brace of bass weighing 32.9 and 27.9 pounds. The next day, Mike, Mason
and Geoff Klopp trolled up a limit of stripers scaling 12.7, 18.3, 19.5,
20.7, 29.8 and 30.8 pounds. Striped bass bit in Indian River with the
northeast wind. Dave Walker and Brent Wiest fished there Tuesday using live
spot, bucktails, Storm Shads and Stretch plugs. They released over 20 rock,
and kept their limit, including Dave's citations that weighed 23.1 and 25.3
pounds. Standings in the Lewes Harbour Striper Tournament as of this writing
show Cory Falgowski in First with his 43.6 pounder. Jeff Gardiner has Second
with a 39.6 pound rock, and Corky Falgowski is Third with a 36.9 pound
linesider. The Tourney runs through November 23rd.

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck and
trolling trips. Here's some of his reports from this week to give you a
taste of what Capt Dan has to offer.

11/11/10 Five hour Inlet Trip in truly brutal wind and tide. Spent the first
half of the trip dealing with the crazy drift yet still managed to put a 33"
Striper in the box while missing a few others. Set up inside the south jetty
for some Tog action, the wind was almost to wicked for this. Huge belly in
the line created by the wind made for super tough feel of the bites. The Tog
won today, stealing countless baits, my crew could only manage one keeper
    and two throw-backs.

11/12/10 Our Inlet trip started off tough when one of our lady anglers
wasn't feel well so we decided to make the 10 minute ride back to the dock
and allow her to go shopping for the next few hours. The second time we
arrived at the inlet found slack tide and the fish just were not biting.
Fourty-five minutes later, as the water started moving again, the bite
turned on and two hours later we limited out. Back at the dock with a box
full (12) of tasty Tog and a very happy crew.

    Great report Sue

I have not fished the back bay in many years. I have been in Ocean City over the last few weekends and every day wish I had one of my boat in town. I bet I don't miss out on it for too long!,, Thanks again!
