Lots of bluefish were caught in the surf this past week in Ocean City and
DEL beaches, but a lot of them were small. "Bait Stealers!" anglers
exclaimed! Some days were better than others, and a number of kingfish were
described. Also some ling cod. Finger mullet seemed to be the ticket.
Anglers either cut the mullet into chunks on top and bottom surf rigs, or
they used the finger mullet whole on "finger mullet" rigs.
One man came in to say he caught a couple of good sized croakers on Saturday
night. That was interesting.
Assateague surf seemed to be slow according to the talk lines, with some
bluefish, sharks, and a few red drum. Some of the locals may be keeping
things quiet. One man posted that he had a total "skunk" on Sunday...
Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a "
sputnik sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always
carry a selection of sputnik sinkers in my tackle box.
Tautog fishing is open and MD and anglers are catching them in the usual
spots. Bulkhead along 2nd through 4th Streets has been the best spot though
keepers are hard to come by. One angler said he caught several but only one
that was a keeper. Another man said it was slow on Saturday and he only
caught sea robins and little sea bass. He saw one nice one caught.
Christopher Merdon e-mailed in: "Good tautog fishing at 2nd street on
Thursday and Friday. Lot of 11-13 inchers, but only one legal at 16.5
inches caught by the guys standing next to me. Lots of sea bass nibbling at
the green crab."
When I was driving home Saturday late afternoon, I saw a man leaving the Rt.
50 Bridge with two whopper tautog in his Bridge net and saw lots of anglers
fishing for them.
Tautog also bite from the Ocean City Inlet, the end of 6th Street and the
end of the Oceanic Pier.
Flounder!
We had reports of flounder this week in the main east channel near the Rt.
50 Bridge. One angler in a boat said he saw a man casting a lure around the
pilings of the Route 50 Bridge with a white lure of some kind and he was
catching flounder and blues.

Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports: On Friday: "Still a lot of throwback flounder in the
bay. A few bluefish and stripers are being caught around the Rt. 50 Bridge.
On Thursday, Flounder continue to bite around the Rt. 50 Bridge. There are
also some stripers and bluefish mixed in. Those fishing with live bunker or
mullet are doing the best. On Wed, Good flounder bite in the East Channel
and around the Rt. 50 Bridge. Stripers and bluefish mixed in. Use live
bait."
Had a group of guys come in Saturday to report they were fishing in a boat
out by the South Jetty. They caught tautog and got in four sheepshead. They
also caught several short stripers. All on sand fleas. They said the fish
were breaking their line in the rocks. Fish must have been moving on the the
cold front...
Had a couple reports of stripers from the Route 50 Bridge at night. Not
many, but a couple keepers...
Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) is open (no fishing license required when
fishing on this pier).Anglers are having good action with a lot of flounder,
snapper bluefish both day and night, and some nice tautog at the end of the
pier. They are also catching some spike sea trout at night mixed in with
the blues. Anglers catch blues and trout at night on
Spec Rigs and
Got-cha Plugs. J.J. wants everyone to know that when you come to the
pier, go to the Oceanic Motel and park, then come buy your ticket and he
will give you a pass for your car. There is also a big municipal pay lot
about a block away from the pier. Call the Oceanic Pier at 410-289-2602 for
parking details. (Crabbing has also been good from the Pier.) Female crabs
are leaving the bay to go offshore, and yes, in Maryland Coastal Bays you
are allowed to keep mature female crabs.
Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on Sept 27th : "Plenty of flounder
reported from the Indian River Inlet. There are a load of shorts but keepers
can be found. Gulp baits, minnows, squid a and shiners have been most
effective."
Clark recaps the 14th Annual Delaware Seashore Falls Surf Fishing Classic
Results last weekend:
"The weather was overcast but the winds were light and the rain pretty
much stayed away. There were plenty of fish on the beach. A bunch of short
bluefish but 50 of the 240 tournament anglers posted scoring fish. Was saw
stripers, kingfish, spot, croakers, flounder and blues hit the beach
Mike McCurnin made the most of the one fish he scored. His 16 inch bluefish
qualified as not only the largest bluefish but was also the biggest fish of
the tournament. This netted him over $2,900 in prize money and he won a
fishing rod for placing 15th overall!!
Jay Droney won the kids division with 31 points. Vance Atkins (30 points)
ans Sean Cain (15 points) finished second and third.
Carla Wright won the Women's Division with 26 points. Cindy Wesley (24
points) and Val Vanderputten (15 points) won second and third place,
respectively.
Justin Lynch's 64 points were good for first place in the Open Division .
Jim Peel placed second with 63 points. Andy Twardus (60 points) and Bob
Bailey (48 points) finished third and fourth.
The Reynolds Rack donated by Anita and Shel Chandler was raffled off and won
by Donald Keebaugh. More than $500 was raised benefiting local lids fishing
events!"
Bill Sports Center in Lewes, DEL (302-645-7654) reports that tautog fishing
has been good at the Inner and Outer Wall, Massey's Landing, and Indian
River Inlet. Keeper Stripers were reported from the Indian River Inlet.
Blues in the surf up to 16-inches.
Lewes Harbour Marina (302-645-6227) reports:
"....There are still some sea bass on the open bottom between DB and DA
Buoys, but there's more volume of fish on the snags a little more offshore.
Delaware's sea bass season is open until October 12, when it is shut down
through October 31. It reopens November 1 and runs until the end of
December. A few flounder continue to come off the Old Grounds south of DB
Buoy, as they make their move offshore. Some are real quality specimens.
Some flounder were still found in Delaware Bay as well. Flatties were
reported from the Horseshoe area northeast of Brandywine. Boats anchored
there also encountered kingfish, blowfish, bluefish and surprising numbers
of legal sized weakfish. Maybe it's a sign that we'll see more trout next
spring. Bluefish ranging in size from little snippers to 2 pounds have been
scattered over much of the Bay. Blues have often been seen busting baitfish
in the rip outside the Outer Wall, and the choppers can be caught by
drifting shiners or cut mullet on bottom rigs, or by casting small bucktails
and metals like Kastmasters, Gator spoons and Stingsilvers. Surf casters at
Cape Henlopen also got into blues using cut mullet. Spot are still inside
the Bay, and folks at the rails of Cape Henlopen Pier had plenty of the
tasty panfish while baiting with bits of bloodworm and Fishbites. Tautog
season is back open and can be found along the Inner and Outer Walls and Ice
Breaker rockpiles, as well as on Bay artificial reefs and wrecks."

Capt. Monty on the "
Morning Star" is now fishing for sea bass and flounder daily. Call for
reservations. 410 520 2076. Well..
Maybe it wasn't all that, but we did just finish 4 fantastic days. A 5th was
really good too, but with a release ratio of 12 to 1 you had to break a
sweat to put dinner in the box.
Another day we had an undersized cod that we tagged, along with a
present-day Maryland jumbo of 25 1/2 inches. Incredibly, the bigger fish was
caught by a fellow with a freezer full of cod & haddock. He asked me to tag
& release the breeder and I did. Didn't hurt that he had a 7 pound tog, a 6
pound flounder and several large cbass..
Last week's report included news of an unbelievable cod tag return -- Wasn't
my keypad entry error! Not 200-some miles, the fish had instead been tagged
by us and remained on-station at our largest artificial reef. It had indeed
grown several inches however..
Seems like it's been a long time since I saw sea bass feed way up in the
water-- way-way up. At one stop this week we were tossing out 25 or so feet;
couldn't sink straight down before a fish hit. For a while no one could hit
bottom. It was an incredible bite of throw-backs and some keepers.
Bluefish are showing up in all sizes. Some days throwing back many on the
small side, Other days large blues destroy everything that moves--including
sinkers and keeper cbass.
I think big blues actually measure cbass better than some clients -- they
never seem to eat a throwback clients are winding in.
Personally, I've spent about half my fishing time with 4 & 6 oz hammered
spoons and diamond jigs with a small Clark spoon tied above the jig --
targeting cbass -- real close to 2003 fishing.
Sunday's tile trip cancelled yet again; no sea bassing Sunday & Monday.
Last week might have been it, Might have been the best cbass days we're
going to have.
I think even better days lie ahead though -a few at least- especially in
November & early December.
We'll get our head handed to us too: It's Fishing.............

The Angler Party Boat reports on Sept
27th: "We have had good fishing for sea bass, flounder, and bluefish over
the past week. Bluefish are becoming more plentiful, and averaging 2-3lbs.
There is non stop seabass action with lots of weeding through smaller fish,
but many people are ending up with double digit keepers. We sailed on our
18hr tile/seabass trip this past Sunday. The trip started off slow, but as
weather conditions improved so did the catch. We had a few limits of
blueline tilefish up to 10lbs and seabass up to 4.5lbs. We are sailing daily
from 730am-230pm. Beginning in October we will be sailing from 730am-330 pm
for the same price. Seabass season closes on Oct 11th, and reopens Nov 1st.

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on Sept 29th:
.... Bad weather forecasts, good weather, a little rain and some good Sea
Bass fishing dominated our week here at the Wharf.
Since my last report we have been anchoring up over ship wrecks, rocks and
artificial reefs on a daily basis with my full day trips. I can't say that
it has been outstanding fishing by any stretch but I certainly have to call
it pretty good. Every day we have been enjoying a great Sea Bass bite at
some point in the day. I have actually seen a few limit catches made, and
many anglers have been able to come real close to that magical limit catch
of twenty- five Bass enjoying the last couple of weeks of the Sea Bass
season before the split closure on the 11th of October.
The fishing has actually been pretty good. We are finding lots of Sea Bass
staging around the structures right now along with some Snapper sized Blues
and quite a few Triggerfish. I have only seen a few Flounder this past week
but we have also seen some mixy sized Croakers and even a few Porgies around
these wrecks including a couple of true stud Porgies that have tipped the
scales at over two pounds!
I will continue running Full-Day trips sailing daily at 7:00 a.m. we return
usually around 4:00. These trips will all be exclusively anchor fishing over
shipwrecks, rocks and artificial reefs and Sea Bass will be our primary
target until the season splits. (Then we will target tautog). If you would
like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf or you would
like to book a private charter or reserve space on a special trip please
give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck,
inlet and trolling trips. Here's a couple of his reports to get you a taste
of what he has to offer:
10/01/11 This was to be a offshore trip but when the crew heard the
offshore waters forecast, they decided to change it up to a wreck trip.
Headed out in strong NW winds and by the ten mile mark it was getting very
nautical. Spent the morning hammering the Sea Bass with only one problem,
the keeper ration was as bad as I have seen all year. I'm not talking about
8 to 1 or even 10 to 1, but more like 20 to 1, horrible. After several hours
of releasing 12 and 12.25 inch Sea Bass the guys ask to move back inside and
try for some Triggers or perhaps a Tog. Spent the last ninety minutes
messing with more small Sea Bass as well as two Tog, one of which made it in
the box. Back in the slip with ten Sea Bass, one Tog and a couple snapper
Bluefish & jumbo Begalls.
09/28/11 Ran to the Baltimore looking for some action. On the ride there I'm
informed these guys really don't want Marlin or Mahi, only Yellowfin. Well
our first three fish were the unwanted Marlin so we did our best to get rid
of them quickly, even going so far as to purposely break two off that were
solidly hooked. Our fourth bite turned out to be a welcomed Yellowfin.
Shortly before noon, when it was apparent the tuna were somewhere else, the
guys changed their minds about Mahi and gave us the green light. One big
problem. Another boat had gone pot to pot all morning, I watched them, and
the fish were freaked out and not at all interested in eating. Back in the
slip with one lonely Yellowfin in the box and way too much clean ice. Would
have loved to put some Mahi in the box first, then worried about finding the
tuna's.
09/26/11 Running to the deep looking for a Marlin or two for our Jr.
anglers. Lines weren't in for five minutes when a White Marlin pops up
behind our spreader bar. The next three hours can only be described as a
wide open Marlin bite. When we finally decided to leave the marlin and look
for something to put in the box, we had released four White Marlin, broke
two off in mid-fight and had five or six others that either didn't find the
hook or were just window shopping. Went looking under gear for Mahi and
after a few blank sets we found a double ball set that was holding fish.
Spend the rest of the day putting some small to mid size Mahi in the box.
Great day, four out of the five anglers caught their first Marlin today.
09/25/11 Half day of wreck fishing for some tasty Sea Bass. Bite was good,
even great and the keeper ratio wasn't bad either, maybe 6 to 1. Back in the
slip with a dozen Sea Bass and a couple Snapper Blues to send back to
Lutherville, MD.

James A. Donofrio, executive director of the Recreational Fishing
Alliance
has been actively working on the fisheries crisis. The RFA believes the
future of our fisheries is dependent on fixing the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery
Conservation and Management Act which has laid down strict time-frames that
do not take into account livelihoods and that a fishery is rebounding
steadily.

Maryland Fishing License
Anglers fishing in Ocean City will need to purchase a saltwater fishing
license. This license will cover both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastal
waters and surf of Ocean City and Assateague Island. Yes, this includes surf
fishing. If you already have a Chesapeake Bay Saltwater license you are good
to go! Anglers will be able to purchase the license online. The
license you want to choose is "Bay and Coastal Sport" You can either choose
a year-round or 7-day. The online site will add on a small convenience fee.
The state has set the tackle stores up with paper licenses so we can do your
licenses in our stores.
If you know you are coming to Ocean City, and you want to get it done ahead
of time you can
also call a toll free number (1-800-918-2870)
or print and mail in an application. Boat
Licenses: $50 and everyone on your boat can go
fishing without a license. You will get a personal license along with your
boat license, so you can go shore fishing as well. They will send you your
sticker for your boat in the mail. If you come to our stores, we have the
stickers.
Mail the application to their main office:
Maryland Dept. of Natural resources
Annapolis Service Center
P.O. Box 1869
1804 West Street, Suite 300
Annapolis, MD 21401
If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat
License, you don't have to buy a license, but you do have to register online. This
is free but cannot be done over the phone. (The state says it has no money
for a phone line.) Print out your number and keep an id with
you when you go fishing. You can also download it to your smart phone and
show it to the DNR officer.
It only takes a couple minutes. If you have no printer or smart phone, write
down the authorization number.
Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license,
it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA licence
you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each
state can "try" to figure out "how many" fish are being caught in their own
individual states. (VA Free
Registry)
If you want to go fishing in Ocean City without a license, your choices will
be the "Oceanic Pier" or to go fishing on a party or charter boat. You can
also go crabbing and clamming in Ocean City without a license. Or you can
fish off your own private dock.
Senior citizens 65 and older. Cost is $5 if you have a MD driver's license
and are a resident of MD,
but if you are a non-resident there is no break. No break for boat licenses
either. $50 resident or non-resident,
plus around $3 for the internet fees.
Contact Info
If you have any questions regarding Maryland's sport fishing license
requirements, you may contact Fisheries Service via e mail:
