Ocean City Maryland & Assateague Island - Delaware Beaches - Ocean n Bay Fishing Report

Fishing Report by Sue Foster

Water Temperature (WTMP): 63.0°F

Everyone was talking about tautog this week! Some really good tautog fishing
has been happening in Ocean City from the shore and also for anglers in
boats. Some days are better than others, but most good anglers, following
the tides are doing well. Surf fishing was so-so this weekend. Small
snapper blues were still biting in the surf, with a few nicer-sized ones
mixed in. But it wasn't as active as last week. Some anglers fishing
Assateague reported sharks, skates and kingfish. Two nice stripers were
caught in Ocean City that we heard of from the beach during the week.
Stripers were biting from the Route 50 Bridge at night. Some keepers, a lot
of shorts.... Anglers in boats are catching stripers near the Rt. 50 Bridge
and main east channel as well with live spot or live eels. Offshore,
Tautog, triggerfish, blues, flounder and sheepshead are offshore on the
wrecks when it's not too windy to get out there! Sea bass is closed until
November 1st.

Surf fishing was just so-so this week. Anglers caught snapper blues with a
few larger ones mixed in. One man caught three bluefish. Another man caught
one. Others caught none. The weekend was so nice that anglers said it was
slow. I had one customer say he caught sharks and skates on Assateague but
no blues. One 44-inch striper was caught in the Ocean City surf from 135th
Street during the week. I heard of another 30-inch striper caught from 126th
Street on Friday. I heard of some "short" flounder, more sharks and skates,
and one huge star gazer.

Beach replenishment is stirring up the water and must have stirred up this
critter. Darrell Zepp of Westminster MD e-mailed in his report and picture:
"Hi Sue, thanks for your help in identifying that Stargazer on Saturday,, I
attached a photo of it, and caught it at the rocks in the surf at 48th
Street on a white bucktail with a 6" curtail,, it was 22" and weighed 14
lbs,, what a beast to bring in,,Sunday morning caught one keeper Taug and
several shorts at the bulkhead on 2nd street on sand flees,, saw another guy
with a 20" Taug in the bucket,, no luck with my planer boards from the
bulkhead this time,," - His picture is in our Surf
Gallery

The weekend was calm with a west wind, but some days the wind is blowing
right off the ocean. If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a " sputnik
sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always carry a 3
1/2 or 4 ounce sputnik in my tackle box.

I didn't see anyone post much of anything exciting on Assateague surf this
weekend except a snapper blue, skates, some kingfish and a dogfish here and
there. Maybe it was the full moon, but surf fishing was just slow.

"Rich60" posted on Stripers Online: "Made a late Friday night run to OC.
Hit Assateague Island early Saturday morning to fish the incoming tide.
Fished spot and bunker chunks on the big rods but no action other than a
rather large and feisty skate. Came back out at 5:30 PM to again fish the
incoming tide and set up on a nice hole I saw. Again put bunker and spot
chunks on the big rods but not even a bite. Fortunately there was some good
Kingfish action on the light rods and pulled in several nice ones for
dinner. Also managed several large doggies and a small spot that completely
tangled up my rig. A beautiful night to fish with the full moon. Apparently
not much action overall for anyone - I didn't see anyone right or left of me
getting any action and I ran into several friends who got skunked."

David Robinson of Silver Spring e-mailed in his surf report from last
weekend when surf fishing was more active on the bluefish:
"Melvin Brownring and his brother Andrew Sellshort and I were fishing on the
Bayard street corridor Sunday and Monday . Andrew caught a fish that could
not be identified. He was sleeping and the line started to sing from the
drag. If was fat and black with a large mouth and about 25 inches. We got is
about 10 feet away and it got off.
Also Melvin caught a large flounder with mullet and we did get many small
snapper blues . Weather was perfect."

Well the large fish could have been a black drum. Or maybe it was another
one of those big Star Gazers!

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

rigs? We have plenty in our shops or buy online! Shop Online

Anglers did excellent on tautog this past week. Green crabs or sand fleas
were the ticket. Be sure to measure your tautogs carefully. Anglers in MD
are allowed to keep 2 fish, 14-inches or larger until Nov 1st. After Nov
1st, anglers in MD are allowed to keep 4. Tautog are biting from the Inlets,
the Oceanic Pier, Rt. 50 Bridge and the bulkhead along 2nd through 4th
Streets. One angler in a boat said he went to Russell's reef and caught
nothing, then went just offshore of Homer Gudelsky Park and caught some nice
tautog on sand fleas.

When I came to work on Thursday and crossed over the Route 50 Bridge anglers
were flinging big tautog over the railing. The tide was high and just
starting out. Apparently Thursday and Friday were really great tautog
catching days. Saturday was a little slower but still good for most folks.
We sold so much tautog bait on Saturday morning, we sold out of everything
live by noon. Frozen sand fleas still work fine.

B Trento sent me this e-mail and a link to
U-Tube video. I watched it and thought it very interesting. Maybe you
will too. "Click here: YouTube - Night Scuba Diving - Sleeping Fish. When
you go tog fishing ever wonder what it looks like under the water if you
were a fish!
GREAT video, a friend forwarded wanted to share, 1 st time I have seen this
GREAT stuff!"

Anglers fishing the Route 50 Bridge are doing really well on stripers at
night. One man said he had two 34-incher one day last week. The weekend saw
lots of "shorts" with some keepers mixed in. Some bluefish and shad were
also biting. One angler said he had luck with a red and white Gotcha Plug.
Other anglers had luck with slim soft bodies on a one-ounce lead head.
Others were using the Swimming Shad lures in 5 or 6 inch. Mullet, White, and
Trout colors have been popular.

Flounder season is still open in Ocean City. I didn't have many flounder
reports this week, but they are still there! Here's a report from Dave
Sopata from the weekend of the 8th: "Here are the pictures of the flounder
we caught from the weekend of the 8th of October. Three of my friends came
down to my place in OC for a fishing weekend, we caught around 50 Flounder
all weekend with 3 being keepers, a lot of close ones as well 15-18.5. ALL
keepers and most fish caught on outgoing tide. Most caught on White Gulp
except the keepers were caught on Chartreuse Gulp."

Their pictures are in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
Inshore Photos.

Another angler reports catching some keeper flounder last week from the
Homer Gudesky Park. It was real high tide and stormy and the fish were real
close to the rocks!

Capt. Bobby Gower of the " Bay Bee
reports flounder averaging up to 17-inches. Only one keeper on Friday and
none during the weekend but there was some action with throwbacks. The fun
news is that the Bay Bee went striper fishing on the high tide with live
spot. Several stripers were caught up to 24-inches. No keepers but a good
time. Capt Gower says the Bay Bee will continue to do flounder/striper
trips Friday through Sunday.

Nick of the Get Sum is doing
charters for tog, flounder and stripers.

Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports. "FRIDAY, October 22, 2010: The "Bay Bee" returned
from their morning trip with a keeper flounder and a bunch of throwbacks.
Capt. Bob reported clean water during the incoming tide.

I heard there has been some small stripers caught in the Ditch, around the
Rt. 50 Bridge and around the South Jetty.

Capt. Bruce McGuigan from Capt. Mac's Bait & Tackle told me that he saw the
first migratory striper caught this year. Fish measured 44-inches and was
caught from the surf off 135th Street.

THURSDAY, October 21, 2010: I took a trip on the "Morning Star" today. Rough
seas. Everyone aboard caught their limit of tautog. Largest weighed 14 lbs.
8 oz. Caught on green crab. Anglers also caught a couple of sheepshead in
addition to throwing back small flounder, sea bass, croaker and weakfish. "

Larry Jock gives us the results of Last Weekend's Roctoberfest tournament
held by Bahia Marina:
SUNDAY, October 17, 2010: The Bahia Marina Rocktoberfest Tournament ended at
4pm today and here are the final results:

ROCKFISH DIVISION:

All of the stripers and bluefish were caught around the Rt. 50 Bridge. The
skate was caught around the South Jetty. The tautog was caught around
Harbour Island."

J.J. from the Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) reports lots of keeper tautog from
the end of the pier. One regular tautog fisherman (John) caught 12 keepers.
Of course, you can only keep two so the rest got released for another day.
Saturday was a little slower. There were also some sheepshead and
triggerfish. At night, the action was tiny blues and shad. Blues at night
eat Gotcha
Plugs and Spec
Rigs.. J.J. wants everyone to know that when you come to the pier, go
to the Oceanic Motel and park, then come buy your ticket and he will give
you a pass for your car. There is also a big municipal pay lot about a block
away from the pier. Call J.J. at 410-289-2602 for parking details.

Clark from Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on the 12th: " Small blues on the
beach and a good mix of small stripers, flounder and kings. Togging in the
Inlet is good. Bluefish are coming in on the incoming tide in the Inlet.
Night time striper fishing has been good."

Thanks Clark!

Bill Sports Center (302-645-7654) reports good really good tautog up by the
Inner and Outer Wall in the Delaware Bay. Stripers, bluefish and tautog at
the Indian River Inlet. Cape Henelopen Pier has had blues, spot, and
croaker.

Anglers now need a DE Fishing License to fish, crab, and clam in DEL: The
state has published a very good
FAQ on the license requirement. Individual Delaware Fishing Licenses are
now available
online.
Stop into Fenwick Tackle and get your license. 302-539-7766.

Delaware anglers will also need a F.I.N. number every year, similar to a
hunting H.I.P. number. It is free, very simple to get, but necessary. DNREC
has e-mailed us how to get it! To obtain a F.I.N. number anglers may visit
www.delaware-fin.com, or call 800-432-9228, any time of day or night.

In Maryland, In Maryland, you do not need a license to fish in the ocean or
coastal bays until 2011, but you do need a free Registry number from NOAA if you are 16 and
older. Go to www.countmyfish.NOAA.gov to print your free number. You can
also call a toll free number and get it in a few minutes. 1-888-MRIP411
(1-888-674-7411). They will ask you for your name, address, and phone
number. It's not a large big deal, no one is fining anyone, but it will help
the states to count angler's catches more accurately.

Capt. Mike Abbaticchio of the
Judith M at Bahia Marina (410-289-7438, 410-251-5859, 443-497-1361)
fishes out of Bahia Marina at 22nd Street in Ocean City. See our web site
for details. WWW.JUDITHMFISHING.COM "

I had a customer that fished the boat this weekend and they caught lots
of tautog, released some big sea bass, and had a whopper triggerfish! They
were very happy.

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on the 20th:

The weather continues to be our biggest enemy here at the Wharf. In the
past few weeks we have had more dock time than we have had fishing time with
boats all tied up to their piers waiting for a break in the nonstop wind.
When the wind does let up we have been able to see some very decent Tautog
fishing....

...I did manage to get out a few days this past week and every trip met with
a fairly good Tog bite. These fish have been the most active around the
Breakwaters and some of the lighthouses close to shore mostly, however with
the water temperatures starting to fall they are becoming a little more
active around the wrecks and some of the artificial reefs now. Tog season is
definitely in full swing as of right now and fortunately we can take
advantage of these crafty bait robbers now that they are biting and we can
also fish pretty close to home allowing us to run with a bare minimum amount
of patrons at the rail!
.

It's just a matter of time and I expect to see some of these big Linesiders
landed in our area in the very near future. We will start running our open
boat Striper trips as soon as the fish are here but for present time Tog are
at the top of the menu.

As long as we can have some decent weather we should be seeing some
outstanding fishing over the next several weeks. I will be concentrating on
the Blackfish (or Tautog) sailing daily at 7:00 a.m. as I stated earlier we
can run with a bare minimum crowd since they can be caught so close to home.
Stripers are just around the corner and our Sea Bass season will reopen in
less than two weeks.

If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf
or you would like to book a private charter or reserve space on a special
trip, please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck and
trolling trips. Here's some of his reports from this week to give you a
taste of what Capt Dan has to offer.

10/11/10 Out for the last of the Sea Bass until November 1st with a family
of three from Reading, PA. Bite was super good, fish on before the hooks
even touched bottom. Keepers were a little more scarce today than we had
seen the last few trips but this crew of three managed to put 25 tasty Sea
Bass in the box.

10/16/10 Two man Tog trip to the Inlet (south jetty) on-board our skiff.
Slammed the Tog for a couple hours even though our limit was reached in less
than one hour. Spent the rest of the trip catching and releasing Tog as well
as small Black Drum. Anyone out there that loves to fish but is on a tight
budget needs to consider doing one of these trips, great fishing at a great
price and only a 15 minute run for the docks to the fishing area.

(In anticipation of our Fall fishing season we are offering a few specials
that will allow you to enjoy the Fantastic Fall Fishing that Ocean City has
to offer and put some tasty fillets in the freezer all at a very affordable
price.

The first offer we have for you is our 8 Hour Premium Wreck Trip for up to
five persons for $475.00. This "special" is available every day of the week
except Saturdays from 10/01/10 through 11/12/10. All bait & tackle will be
provided.

The second offer is a 5 Hour Inlet/Bay Trip for up to four persons on board
our 18' skiff for only $245.00. This trip is available every day except
Saturdays from 10/11/10 through 12/08/10. All bait & tackle will be
provided.

If you would like more info on these trips please check out our website or

James A. Donofrio, executive director of the Recreational Fishing
Alliance
has been actively working on the summer flounder and sea bass crisis. The
RFA believes the future of our fisheries is dependent on fixing the
Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act which has laid down
strict time-frames that do not take into account livelihoods and that a
fishery is rebounding steadily.
The RFA is fighting hard for our right to fish. We are now also fighting a
"lead ban."
