Fishing Report by Sue Foster

Water Temperature (WTMP): 74.8°F

Fishing this week was really good on flounder. Lots of keepers were caught
in the MSSA flounder tournie on Saturday. Oceanic Pier, Rt. 50 Bridge and
Homer Gudelsky Park all had success with flounder and blues. Anglers are
having good luck with the usual minnow and shiner baits but adding Gulp to
their baits to catch the bigger flounder. Small spot are around at the Rt.
90 Bridge, canals, and Northside Park. Anglers are catching them to lure
bigger flounder to their hooks. There's also been some keeper stripers
around the Rt. 50 Bridge. Bluefish and stripers hit the Rt. 50 Bridge this
week at night and early morning on Gotcha Plugs, live bait, and swimming
shad lures. In the surf, we're having summertime action with kingfish, spot,
croaker, some bluefish and sharks. Triggerfish are here at the inlets and
bulkhead along with some tautog action. Offshore we have had some cobia, up
and down sea bass fishing, more flounder, and further offshore, lots of
dolphin, some tuna, and white marlin.

Surf anglers are still talking about catching sharks on the beach at night
or early in the morning....Some anglers are also catching big rays. One
angler had his rod pulled into the ocean, never seen again! Many anglers
are reporting good luck with kingfish, spot, and some croaker. Anglers
fishing for kingfish and spot should use small hooks and bloodworms or
artificial bloodworm combined with a little strip of clam, mullet, bunker,
or squid fillet. For sharks, bunker fillet or whole squid on a larger hook.
A kingfish head is very good shark bait. Finger mullet for bluefish. (Had a
few more reports of bluefish this week.) Croaker and Sea Trout take a small
to medium sized hook with any kind of cut bait. Croaker also like clam.
Trout take worms. I like a combination bait of worm (real or fake) and cut
bait. Look around, and find yourself a hole on the beach. Flat beaches
don't produce.

Bill Klein of "Stripers Online" reports of Assateague: "The tasty kingfish
are around in somewhat better than usual numbers, and fairly lively sharking
activity continues from the local beaches."

"Koss" posted about his Tuesday fishing experience on Assateague surf:
I also fished Tues...they were there and in abundance but way, way out
there. I was only catching fish on my longest casts...all on the bar. If I
couldn't hit it then I reeled in and tried again. Got a bunch of very nice
whiting, spot 2 at a time for bait. In the evening I had a run that rivals
one of my best ever. A shark took a nice fresh whiting head and headed for
Barcelona. I had the drag on the saltist cranked so line was "plinking" off
the spool but she still managed to take me all the way to the brass...and
quickly. Finally got her turned and she thrashed around for a bit on the
surface some 280 yards away. Thought I had a nice spinner or blacktip but it
turned out to be a giant dusky...6.5 ft to the fork and crazily fat. Best
part....I got her sister 20 min LATER."

"Poppy" posted on Stripers Online that the stripers in the surf in DE have
picked up. Also some blues.

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

Route 50 Bridge continued to have reports of excellent bluefishing at night
with Got-cha Plugs and Spec Rigs. Some nights the striper bite is on!
Usually the stripers are below the bluefish. When stripers bite anglers use
5 and 6-inch Swimming Shad Lures, Fin-S Fish soft bodies on lead heads, or
Zoom along with 2-ounce Gotcha Plugs. 2-ounce Gotcha Plugs are popular when
the blues are biting the soft bodies in half! Sometimes the blues on the
bridge bite in the daytime too. Early morning and towards late afternoon is
best. Anglers are also starting to use live spot they are catching with
little hooks and bloodworms to catch bigger flounder and stripers.

We heard there was a good flounder bite at the Homer Gudelsky Park on
Saturday morning as well.

Tautog and triggerfish are still at the South Jetty. Sand fleas are the best
bait here and just offshore as well. Stripers on live spot or live eels or
lures. Anglers are also starting to catch more cobia on offshore wrecks.
Larry Jock of the Coastal Fisherman reports: "On Wednesday the charter boat
"Fish Finder" returned from Great Gull Shoal with 2 cobia weighing 31 lbs.
and 41 lbs. Caught on live spot."

We at Oyster Bay Tackle and Fenwick Tackle saw a couple nice flounder and
bluefish this week.
These pictures are in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
Inshore Photos.

Rachel McCoy from Fenwick Island, Delaware came in to Fenwick Tackle with a
19-inch Flounder on Thursday along with her Proud Father Jack McCoy and
Rachel's Uncle Lou. This was her very first Flounder from the Ocean City
Inlet that weighed 2 pounds 10 ounces. The bait of choice was Live Minnows!

12 year old Travis Baker, 10 year old Kyle along with 10 year old Sabrina
all from Keenwick on the Bay caught 9 Bluefish on Tsunami Lures around the
RT 50 Bridge on 7/23/2010.

Our own Dan Wilson from Baltimore, MD and Oyster Bay Tackle fished with
Dennis Blessing also of Oyster Bay aboard the O.C. Joy II on Tuesday and
caught his very first keeper Flounder, a 21-incher on Live Minnows.

Travis Baker from Fenwick Island, De came into Fenwick Tackle with a 11
pound Bluefish he caught from the RT 50 Bridge on Wednesday. Travis likes
the Tsunami 4" Red Lure.

Ham Mcpartland of Lutherville, MD caught his limit of flounder while fishing
with his Dad and Noah Kness. The largest was 3 pounds 9 oz. and was
23-inches. The other 3 were between 19 and 20 inches. Caught on the incoming
tide with minnow and gulp on a Tap Dancer Rig. Main East Channel on
Saturday. Ham's Dad noted that the flounder were caught all within a 1/2
hour.

Bill Wolf from Perry Hall, Md came into Oyster Bay on Saturday afternoon
with a 4 .5 pound Flounder he caught while fishing aboard the "Miss O'Webb"
with Capt Dave Webb around Harbor Island using Squid Strips as bait. Bill's
Flounder was 22.5 inches.

These pictures are in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
Inshore Photos.

Anglers are starting to catch little spot in the bay on little piece of
worms to live bait for bigger flounder and also stripers. We had reports of
anglers catching some nice stripers near the Rt. 50 Bridge on live spot.

Mike Hammond e-mailed in an interesting occurrence: "We were fishing on this
past Sunday July 25, 2010 in the back bay from the Thorofare to the Rt. 90
bridge. On the far side of the bay we saw 100-200 bottlenose dolphin.
Adults and some smaller ones mixed in. I have been coming to OC for 54
years and have never seen anything like
that. They were right next to our pontoon boat and as far as we could see."

Capt. Bobby Gower of the " Bay Bee
reports much improved flounder fishing this week. Most days saw 70 plus
flounder with a few keepers in the mix. On Friday, The "Bay Bee" had 3
keepers and 125 throwbacks. On Saturday, The "Bay Bee" had 6 keepers caught
on squid and shiners in the East Channel. Bobby Gower says all the fish have
been in the East Channel.

Everyone who is seriously flounder fishing seems to be using GULP! We have
never sold so much Gulp in our stores! I like to put Gulp on with a minnow,
shiner, or fresh cut bait. Anglers are buying white and chartruese swimming
mullet grubs in either 3 or 4 inch. Some of the guys are using the larger
Gulps as well. 6 and even 7 inch Jerk Shads, and baiting them up on either a
lead head or simply sliding them on a hook with their cut bait. Others are
using Gulp Shrimp . Plus more and more we are hearing of anglers catching
live spot and baiting them up. Others are buying pints of minnows, and
picking through them and using only the largest minnows.

Capt. "Skip" Doug Mcguire charters in the bay. Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports: "Skip's Charter & Guide Service" returned with a 21-inch
flounder during their morning trip on Friday and another from their
afternoon trip. Capt. Skip also reported numerous throwbacks. Gulp! Swimming
Mullets have been doing the trick. On Wednesday, "Skip's Charter & Guide
Service" had a 20-inch flounder caught on live spot in the East Channel.
