Ocean City Maryland & Assateague Island - Delaware Beaches - Ocean n Bay Fishing Report
By Sue Foster, Oyster Bay Tackle Shop, Ocean City MD - Fenwick Island DE
Sept 27th, 2010
Fishing Report by Sue Foster
Water Temperature (WTMP): 71.4°F
Fishing this week was a little slower in the bay because of wind and dirty
water. More tautog were caught. There's still flounder around the Rt. 50
Bridge and Inlet area. More stripers are around. A surprising number of
speckled trout were reported, though many are small this year. Red drum were
biting on Assateague surf even though it was very rough. Blues, sharks and
kingfish too. Offshore the sea bass bite is real good when anglers get out.
Some nice flounder are out there too. Further offshore, dolphin and marlin
are jumping on the hooks!

We had rough weather on the beach in Ocean City but when you can hold bottom
you can caught some nice bluefish on whole finger mullet and mullet rigs.
Fresh finger mullet have been available. Hurricane season is upon us. If
you find you can't hold bottom try using a " sputnik
sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always carry a 3
1/2 or 4 ounce sputnik in my tackle box.
Bill Klein of "Stripers Online" reports "Starting to see some fine drum
action on our beachfronts, and at least an occasional taste of quite welcome
cooler weather."
"Fish Daddy" posted on the 26th: "Pulled out on the beach for a 3RD
all-weekend'er in a row. Pulled up next to Marcus and talked a bit. Marcus
had already landed one in the morning. Caskill John was down the beach a
bit. Decided to visit for a bit. Good to see you my friend.
The conditions on Friday night were rough to say the least. It took 10 oz
just to hold. The wind was 20-25 with higher gusts. From my knees down, I
got an exfoliation from Mother Nature
Marcus landed his second nice Drum of the day, right next to me. I thought
to myself, here we go again. Beautiful fish Marcus. The pics are on the way.
Marcus left, Catskill John was whipped and was going to head for the camper.
He didn't even make it to the camper when my rod dipped. It didn't strip
line or anything. The bite looked like a skate, a steady bounce, bounce. I
went to check it and set the hook. It didn't feel like much, maybe a small
Sandbar. The fish was coming straight in and was no trouble. When I got the
fish to the outer breakers, it was game on. The fish took a doz runs and the
fight lasted about 1/2 hour. The super rough conditions didn't help. I saw
John walking down the beach towards me. Ron H was about 100 yards north of
me and that is where I finally landed the fish. Thanks for the pics Ron and
thanks for the help John. The fish went 49 1/2" X 34" girth. WHAT A PIG!
Caught plenty of Kingies and nice size Blues as well.

"Cast Net" posted: "Went out Friday night, 5 until 10p. Wind was less then
ideal on the beach but still fishable. Had one good run that fought like a
ray and ended up busting my mainline when I tightned up a little too much on
it. Rookie mistake. A couple blues at dusk for the smoker and sharks after
dark. They tore my leaders up, lost 4 hooks and 2 weights to bite offs.
Went back this morning from 7 until 11. Wind had water stained and only
managed two hits all morning. Both hits came within seconds of each other.
Had a shark hit first and as I was cranking it in the 2nd rod doubles over
and line starts peeling off. I get the shark in asap toss it back in the
spike and run for the rod still bent over for the minute. Ended up getting a
46" drum. "
Several others caught red drum this week and weekend on Assateague,
including "Poppy" who got a 52-incher. He estimated by the girth that the
fish weighed approximately 69 pounds!
Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!
The Boy Scouts of America from Annadale, Va, rented surf rods from us and
fished Assateague this weekend, the kids caught Spot, Kingfish, Sharks and
a Drum was also caught using Live eels, fishbites, Mullet and Squid. Give us
a call if you have a group that need to rent surf rods. 410-524-3433

Route 50 Bridge is seeing some flounder and decent tautog fishing by day. At
night there's been stripers and bluefish. The weather has been a bit to be
desired for sure. It's been a wonderful air temperature, but the wind has
kept the water dirty. Local "Tito" called me up on Sunday afternoon to say
he saw several people catching flounder at the Inlet!
Finger mullet and peanut bunker are flipping around the bays and inlets. Get
your cast net out! Still live spot to be caught too on small hooks and
bloodworms.
Capt. Bobby Gower of the " Bay Bee
reports slow fishing this week due to the dirty water in the bay. The boat
had around 100 throwbacks this week but no keepers. Small flounder around
the inlet wall. Lots of anglers have been casting from the cement wall and
catching them. Capt Gower commented that down in South Bay (behind
Assateague) crabbers have reported 20 inch flounder in their crab pots! Yes,
flounder are here, just hard to catch when the wind blows and the water is
dirty. Capt Gower says the Bay Bee will continue to do flounder trips
Thursday through Sunday. Starting Nov 1st, rockfish trips will begin.
Nick of the Get Sum is doing
charters for tog, flounder and stripers.
