Fishing Report by Sue Foster

Water Temperature (WTMP): 72.1°F

Flounder fishing was good but a lot more "shorts." A couple really nice ones
were reported over 9 pounds. It's summertime! The surf saw interesting
things like croaker, small sea trout, kingfish, and spot. A couple stripers
were reported along with some big sharks and rays. Spot were reported in
the bay along with a few more reports of croaker. Oceanic Pier and Rt. 50
Bridge were excellent on blues and some stripers at night. The Inlet saw
some stripers too. Triggerfish are here at the inlets and bulkhead. They
were apparently abundant offshore this weekend and anglers also reported
spade fish. Offshore we have had sharks, tuna, marlin, and dolphin. Sea
bass fishing was pretty good on some days.

It was an interesting week in the surf. Some anglers were complaining of
catching only rays and sharks. Some said they couldn't catch anything. Then
others came in with all kinds of stories of fish, especially from the night
time anglers. There were at least 4 reports of schools of little sea trout
in the 10-12-inch range on the beach. I had reports of spot and one report
of several silver fish that were spiny. I am thinking that would be
croaker. Unless possibly they were talking about bluefish. I heard of a
couple stripers at night. Interesting... Some kingfish were biting good for
some anglers, not so good for others. Big sharks and huge rays are still the
talk of the beach.... Anglers fishing for kingfish and spot should use
small hooks and bloodworms or artificial bloodworm combined with a little
strip of clam, mullet, bunker, or squid fillet. For sharks, bunker fillet or
whole squid on a larger hook. Finger mullet for bluefish. Croaker and Sea
Trout take a small to medium sized hook with any kind of cut bait. Croaker
also like clam. Trout take worms. I like a combination bait of worm (real or
fake) and cut bait.

Zach Chabala e-mailed in on Friday: "Last Saturday I fished at night...
nothing... Sunday 1 kingfish and hooked up into something big that wouldn't
move... I think it was a butterfly ray but it broke my leader. Monday
nothing.. Tuesday fished the Bay Bee and my brother won the pool with a 17
1/2 inch flounder. There were tons of sea robins in the bay... we caught
more of them then flounder... 45 throwbacks. Wednesday there was a good run
of spot and they were definitely spot. I caught one big kingfish on a
mullet rig, a dogfish and a 15 inch flounder all from the surf. Yesterday I
fished Indian River inlet and caught one 19inch blue about 2 lbs on outgoing
tide. Sharks would tear up the bait every night and only got 1 hook up on
Tuesday but didn't land it.On saturday a guy caught a 30" striper in the
surf and last night (Sunday) a guy caught what had to be a 45 " striper and
at least 25 lbs. we all watched in amazement as he grabbed his leader and it
snapped!!! The trophy got away!"

Matt Pauley e-mailed in his picture of a 4-foot dusky shark he caught from
the surf on James St. in Fenwick Island, Delaware on full bunker. His
picture is in our Photo Gallery soon under Surf
Photos.

Assateague surf had all kinds of sharks, rays, kingfish, and flounder.
"Rich60" posted on stripers online:
"Fished AI out front last Tuesday and Wednesday early AM and out back on
Thursday AM. Tuesday morning hit the beach at dawn and low tide. Kingfish
were everywhere in the surf and I was hitting them on the head with each
cast for the first hour. Pulled in one or two with almost every cast, missed
as many as I caught and kept several larger ones for dinner. Bite then
slowed down with only one good keeper for the rest of the morning plus a
couple skates thrown in for good measure. All were taken on
FishBitesBloodWorm and squid strips. Had a couple bunker and spot chunked
for sharks but no takers. Wednesday AM had a good stiff onshore breeze out
of the NE. Caught several short flounder, 1 keeper King and a smooth
doggie."

(Kingfish bite first thing in the morning then can taper off when the sun
gets too hot! They'll often bite again come dusk. Combining the FishBites
with some cut bait like squid is makes a really good bait.)

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

Route 50 Bridge was still good on blues at night with Got-cha Plugs and Spec
Rigs. Some nights the stripers bite really well and some nights they don't!
Stripers were hitting 5 and 6-inch Swimming Shad Lures, Fin-S Fish soft
bodies on lead heads, along with 2-ounce Gotcha Plugs. A couple nice
stripers were also reported from the North Jetty. Sometimes the blues on the
bridge bite in the daytime too. Early morning and towards late afternoon is
best.

Tautog and triggerfish. Well, I we heard more about triggerfish on sand
fleas again. There were also tautog at the South Jetty. Gil Simon of
Hampstead, MD got tired of catching short flounder and grabbed some sand
fleas and went to the South Jetty to try for triggerfish. He winded up
catching tautog. We snapped a picture of two 15-inch tautog he caught from
the South Side of the South Jetty with sand fleas on Friday. His picture is
in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
Inshore Photos.

We heard of lots of triggerfish just offshore on the wrecks along with
reports of spade fish as well. Spade fish like a little hook and a piece of
clam.

We at Oyster Bay saw a couple nice flounder this week. Mike Caffarella from
Rotterdam, NY came in with a 21 inch Flounder caught from the RT 50 Bridge,
from the west side on an Incoming Tide using live Minnows as bait on Wed.
Anglea Preziuso caught a 2 pound 1/2 ounce Flounder while fishing North of
the Inlet using Live Minnows on Tuesday. Miles Perzynski from Baltimore, Md
with a 20 inch Blue Fish caught near the Coast Guard Station on Tuesday.
Steve Freinberg caught a really nice 23 1/2 inch Flounder while fishing the
RT 50 Bridge using Shiners as bait. The Flounder weighed in at 4 3/4 pounds.
Happy 4th of July Flounder!

All these pictures are in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
Inshore Photos.

The largest flounder of the week was also weighed in at Old Inlet. Gary
Powlus of Berwick, PA came in with a 9 pound 3 oz, 29-inch, flounder caught
in the Indian River Inlet, MD on 7/1/10. His picture is in our Delaware
Photo Gallery.

Nick of the Get Sum is doing
charters for tog, flounder and stripers. He was "hot" on flounder this week.
On Tuesday he had 2 flounder (19" & 21") during the 2 hour evening trip,
caught on Gulp! Swimming Mullets in the West Channel. On Friday, the "Get
Sum" returned from their 2-hour evening trip with a 21-inch flounder, caught
in the bay behind Assateague Island. On Saturday, "Get Sum" crushed the
flounder during their afternoon trip, returning with 9 keepers caught on
squid and shiners and Gulp! swimming mullets in the "Fishbowl". (Please
don't ask me where the Fishbowl is. That's Nick's secret!)

Capt. Bobby Gower of the " Bay Bee
had some nice keepers on Saturday. The "Bay Bee" had 5 keeper flounder
during their morning trip. Keepers ranged from 19" to 20.5". Caught on squid
and shiners in the South Bay.

Capt. "Skip" Doug Mcguire also charters in the bay. On Wednesday Coastal
Fisherman reported: "Skip's Charter & Guide Service" had a 38-inch
striper and 15 releases from the South Jetty on live spot. On Saturday,
Coastal Fisherman reported: "Skip's Charters & Guide Service" picked up 1
keeper striper during each of their morning and afternoon trips at the South
Jetty."
