Fishing Report by Sue Foster
Water Temperature (WTMP): 55.2 °F
Big blues up to 14 pounds hit the surf on Saturday and Sunday! Boats were
working just off the beach trying to catch the same! A few stripers and a
couple puppy drum were mixed in as well. Stripers were biting inshore and
offshore along with huge bluefish. There were still tautog biting but that
will be the end of them in Ocean City until January. Maryland season is
closed for the month of December. (Delaware remains open.)

big rockfish...."

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!
We at Oyster Bay and Fenwick Tackle had great reports of bluefish hitting
the beach on Saturday and Sunday. The camera was snapping! We had one report
of a blue on Friday. Libby Kelly of Oyster Bay Tackle reports:
"Harry Nazario of Mechanicsville, MD came in with a 10-pound 4-ounce 35 1/2-
inch bluefish, caught from the surf while surf fishing in mid-Ocean City, MD
on a bunker head on Friday. It was still blowing very hard on Friday and it
took 8 ounces to hold. It was their only fish.
On Saturday, the wind was from the West, and even though it was blowing
really hard, the surf was calm out front. Anglers at Fenwick Tackle reported
a blue blitz at 138th Street and one at 146th Street.
Paul Macek from ForestHill, Md fished with his friend on Sunday morning
during the outgoing tide around 100th Street in Ocean City, Md They caught
at least 7 Big BlueFish. Today's Big Boys were from 31 - 35 inches, and the
largest weighed in at 13 pounds the smallest was around 9-pounds. Paul
also fished the day before with great sucess using Bunker and Mullet as
bait. Thanks Paul, Great Job.
Steve Eastwood fished with his Daughter Meredith and Daughter-in-law
Christina and had a very nice blitz of Big Blues on the incoming tide.
Steve used Squid as bait near around 98th Street in Ocean City, Md. The
largest weighed in at 10 pounds and they were 31-31 1/2 inches in length.
Christina said they also caught a Shark.
Patrick Ellington and his son Conor Ellington from Shrewsbury, Pa fished
around 138th Street in Ocean City, Md on Sunday on the outgoing tide using
Finger Mullet. 14 year old Conor caught his Big Bluefish from the Surf.
The fish were 31 and 32 inches and the largest weighed 10 pounds 6 ounces.
Patrick also caught a 27 1/2 inch Striper that he had to put back."

Pictures.
We had some anglers e-mail in their reports and pics as well:
David Ritter of Reisterstown, MD e-mailed in: "Caught some nice blues this
year in the surf. This one at 34 inches today on finger mullet on 126th,
and another around 31. Lots of dogfish and skates too,
and a couple small stripers. Love the shop, you guys always have great
advice
and equipment."
Skip Cerf of Timonium, Maryland e-mailed in : "Here's a pix of a 30"
Bluefish, approx 14 lbs caught on Saturday in the surf at 127st using bunker
head on a fish finder rig on an incoming tide. Set up for Rock but caught
the Blue. Dinner nevertheless."

Pictures.
The Delaware State Park Beach was hopping also. Libby Kelly reports: "Jim
Thompson called in to give a fishing report fron Delaware Beaches. Mr
Thompson caught a short Striper along with 14 Big Bluefish ranging from 28
inches up to 35 1/2 inches. The largest weighed in at 16 pounds. Fishing
the outgoing tide using cut Mullet as bait Mr Thompson put them all back in
the Ocean for another day. Mr Thompson had a morning of non stop fishing
and called in his report after things calmed down. Then as he gave me the
fishing report his rod went down again, Hope you got him Mr Jim. Thank you
for the Report."
"Gearjammer" posted online on Sunday: "Fished a DSSP located north of the
IRI.....beach is really cut up with some nice pockets...one word for the
fishing "unbelievable"...mullet, bunker, hopkins anything you threw at them
they would hit.... a huge flock of birds was working the shoreline all
day....it appears that a large school of blues was just hovering in the
area....caught at least 8 and lost at least 5 more.....felt like the
American Sportsman throwing back those 10lbers....didn't see any stripers
being caught today...."
Other anglers this week said they caught a lot of dogfish on Friday night.
Another angler said he caught and released a red drum while fishing the surf
at 146th Street on Saturday. Another angler said he caught short stripers
and a flounder on Rattletraps on Saturday.
Bluefish bite on finger mullet and mullet
rigs or simply chunks of finger mullet or box squid on surf rigs.
Stripers bite chunks of mullet or bunker. Sharks take any kind of cut bait
or squid. Lures also work.
Bobby Gower on the party boat " Bay
Bee did some striper fishing this weekend. He had one keeper on Saturday
and five throw backs along with some big bluefish. On Sunday when I called
him mid-day, he had one keeper and three throwbacks. They will be fishing
next Sat and Sun with live eels. Call for reservations.
(The Bay Bee runs out of O.C. Fishing Center. Call 410-213-1121 for
reservations.
Capt Gower added that boats fishing offshore North Ocean City were getting
into some keeper stripers along with lots of bluefish. 90th Street to the
North seemed to be doing the best. He said there were schools of bunker out
there.
Some striper fishing was happening on the Route 50 Bridge. Some are biting
during the day but more are biting after dark. We had some really windy days
that got the water stirred up and messed up the fishing on some nights.
Anglers have been working Gotcha
Plugs, Swimming Shad lures, and lead heads with soft bodies attached.
Five and Six Inch bodies seem to be the ticket. Anglers are also using live
eels.
Anglers fishing the Inlets in boats are picking up some stripers. They are
working for them, but they are there. Offshore fishing for stripers and big
blues has been good. Boaters follow the birds diving up and down the coast.
They jig, troll, or cast. Bucktails, Mann's Stretch Lures, Swimming Shad
Lures, Diamond Jigs.... It all works!
Ocean City, MD will be closed to tautog for the month of December. If you
want to fish for tautog, you'll have to go fishing in DE. Indian River Inlet
is the best place to go. Or charter a boat out of Lewes the month of
December. Most of Ocean City party boats will be back after the tautog in
January.
