Fishing Report by Sue Foster

(Note: Oyster Bay Tackle will be closing for the season Mid-December this
year so please get your Xmas Shopping done now!)

A couple nice stripers were caught in the surf, but the bite was very
"slow." Saw a report that anglers in N.J. are landing them pretty good.
Tautog was excellent on the "tide". Sea bass was good offshore. A few
stripers were caught offshore Ocean City, but not many. Some stripers
inshore around the Bridges. Delaware Bay seems to be the "happening" place
for big stripers and tog.

(Please read the info about the new MD Saltwater License at the end of this
report. Come into Oyster Bay and buy your fishing license.) Sorry, we won't
have licenses for 2012 until the spring.

Assateague surf saw only a few nice stripers this week. Anglers caught a
few skates, rays, and dogfish. Other than that, it's the "wait and see"
game. The ones that have been caught are nice, just very "slim pickings." I
saw pics on Stripers Online of anglers in N.J. casting metal from the
beaches and catching their limits. So I guess a lot of the fish are still up
north. "When will they come here in numbers?" anglers are asking? It's
anyone's quess. It could start today; it could start next week; or it may be
a "slow pick" till the end. Only time will tell.

A few nice fish were reported:

"FishingEveryNight" posted on stripers online: "First off, Happy
Thanksgiving to all. Next, my dad headed out this morning to Assateague
Island and threw out about 7:15am. Within 15mins he caught a nice heft 43-in
rockfish with a girth of 26in...Turkey and rockfish I don't think you can
beat it! lol! "

A few stripers have been caught in Ocean City and DEL beaches over the week
and weekend, but not very many!

"Dres79" posted that he caught a nice one on Saturday: "Yesterday I had a 5
hour window and decided late to go down to 3R's .. Got out to the beach
around 12:30. Set up 3 rods pull out the chair and not ten minutes goes by
and middle rods starts going crazy ... landing a 35" 18lb beauty. (Fresh
bunker)."

Heard of another 29-inch striper from the beach near the Indian River Inlet
before the Weekend. And another nice one up there, first thing in the
morning. Had a phone call about that.... But most came up empty or caught
dog sharks and skates/rays. Of course, you can't catch one if you don't go
out there!

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

Need

rigs? We have plenty in our shops or buy online! Shop Online

If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a "
sputnik sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always
carry a selection of sputnik sinkers in my tackle box.

Tautog fishing was excellent on the tide this week. They seemed to bite
really well at the very end of the outgoing tide. I went this week a couple
times to the bulkhead and got another keeper. The game warden said Tuesday
was the best day he had ever seen on the Rt.50 Bridge with keepers up to
23-inches! Heard another guy caught his limit at the bulkhead Saturday
after dark! That's unusual. But that's when the tide was perfect! Anyway,
the Maryland season ends the end of this month. I think everyone ran out of
live green crabs over the weekend. Delaware season remains open, so you'll
have to head to Indian River Inlet if you want to tautog fish after Nov
30th.

Tautog Meeting at the Ocean Pines Library open to the Public: "MARYLAND TO
DECREASE TAUTOG HARVEST BY 49%

November 22, 2011 - ASMFC's Tautog Management Board met November 8th, and
approved Maryland's use of catch curves to estimate necessary harvest
reductions. Based on their approval, Maryland is required to take a 49%
reduction in their fishery in 2012; slightly down from the proposed 53%
coastwide reduction. States are required to implement new regulations to
achieve the harvest reductions by January 1, 2012.

Maryland officials will need to submit emergency regulations by December
16th, 2011 to have effective regulations in place in early 2012. A public
meeting will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the Ocean Pines
Library from 5:30-7:30 pm to discuss options for achieving the 49%
reduction. Options are currently being drafted and will be posted on the
Maryland Fisheries website as soon as they are available."

Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman likes to fish offshore for stripers himself this time of year.
He's been disappointed as many have been. I few happy anglers are lucky and
catch some, but the pickings have been slim. Larry reported on Saturday:

Well, the wait continues. Hardly any stripers were caught inside the
ridiculous 3-mile limit. A lot of anglers tried, but few succeeded. Boats
went north, where reports of bluefish and the occasional striper were heard
over the radio on Friday. Many figured that they would have worked their way
down off the coast of OC, but no luck. The Old Grounds are producing some
nice catches of stripers.Big schools of bluefish were found on the 1st and
2nd Lumps today. A few stripers were underneath.Nothing on the
Jackspot.Tautog fishing off of the Rt. 50 Bridge continues to be good. Green
crabs.. if you can get them."

" On Friday, There is only one way to describe striper fishing today...
TORTURE! It was horrible. There weren't even any bluefish. The only bite
heard on the radio was a bluefish bite off Dewey Beach with an occasional
striper thrown in. Other than that, anglers were spread out all over the
ocean and everyone was complaining about coming up blank.
Little Gull was loaded with gill nets, and the commercial guys weren't
having much luck either. There were definitely more birds than last weekend,
but 99.9% of them were just flying. No diving.. nothing working.Big Bird
Cropper told me that some small stripers were caught just outside the
Inlet.Tim Romberger reported catching a 30-inch striper off the tip of the
South Jetty on a live eel this afternoon.

The lone ray of sunshine seen today was Dominic Ross' big mama-jama striper
that he caught while trolling a Stretch lure 2 miles off the beach at 65th
Street (water tower). Dominic's striper measured 44-inches and weighed 35
lbs. A personal best for Dominic! There were reports that keeper stripers are
just beginning to show up in better numbers in the Indian River Inlet...
three weeks later than normal."

We had a Delaware Bay report!

Matt Farr of Ocean City ventured to the Delaware Bay at Overfall Shoals and
came back with a whopping 23 pound, 40-inch striper caught in on a Stretch
Lure. He was fishing the day after Thanksgiving. His picture is in our Delaware
Photo Gallery.

And I had one picture of a huge striper caught and released offshore Ocean
City!

Don Robey from Arbutus, MD e-mailed in his picture of an estimated 48 to
50-inch striper caught and released 2 1/2 miles off the beach near 28th
Street on an umbrella rig trolling on 11/26/11 He writes: "Boat was put
away for winter. Everything was off the boat. Just took out some rods, net
not big enough and some lures, with weather being so nice. 99% of everything
I catch goes back in water. Do not like to eat fish but nothing better in
the world to do then fish. Just look at the smile! His picture is in our Offshore
Photo Gallery.

"

On Sunday, the Shearin family from Monkton, MD came in with a citation
bluefish caught offshore. Broek Shearin landed the 11 3/4 pound, 34-inch
bluefish caught at the 1st Lump offshore Ocean City. His brother, Pierce
Shearin caught a 7 1/2 pound bluefish (29-inches). They were fishing with
their Dad, Tom Shearin in their boat. Their picture is in our Offshore
Photo Gallery.

Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on Nov 25th : "The striper bite in the
Inlet has picked back up after the rain and wind earlier this week. Plenty
of short fish with the occasional keeper repored from the boats and he
railing/rockpile.
Eels, swim shads and bucktails are working. There are a few bluefish in the
mix as well. Mike Gumrot of Houston DE weighed a 9lb and 15lb striper taken
on the north jetty using swim shads. Dennis Jester had 2 striper that hit an
eel.
Togging along the rocks is good. A few stray stripers on the beach.
Flounder season in Delaware is closed for the remainder of 2011."

Bill Sports Center in Lewes, DEL (302-645-7654) had a good report from
Grizzley Charters on the 22nd: "From Captain Carey Evans, "Grizzly
Sportfishing Charters" out of Fishermans Wharf in Lewes: "Hi, Bill, Tuesday
we had 9 stripers, two over 20# and 2 undersized stripers. Wednesday we had
58 tog up to 10#, 4oz. We have experienced some fine tog and striper fishing
the last two weeks. When we get a nice weather break things have really come
together for excellent fishing. The good tog fishing we are experiencing
should remain strong thru the Christmas Holiday. Striper fishing has just
begun and will get better thru the Christmas Holiday as well."

Lewes Harbour Marina (302-645-6227) reports on Nov 24th:

"..... Big rockfish are still coming from structure at the mouth of Delaware
Bay. Drifting live spot and eels has been effective, but those trolling
Stretch 25+ and Bomber CD25 plugs took their share as well....

In addition to striper action, Bay fishermen enjoyed success with tautog.
Captain Pete on Top Fin told of good trips to the Star Site. First time
togger Kathy Vu was off to a fine start with the 11.39 pound blackfish she
boated aboard the Lil' Angler II. John Leader landed a 7.6 pound tog.
Captain Carey reported red hot togging for the sharpies aboard Grizzly on a
Bay reef Monday. They kept 55 tog, including a 10 pounder for Lenny
Zalewski, Alex Leventovsky's 9.5, a 9.25 for Ray Mazanec, and William
Guzman's 8.75 pounder. Carey said, in addition, the guys had seven other
tautog over the 7 pound citation size while using "white legger" crabs.

The Ocean surf has been pretty quiet, but shore bound anglers did have
success with ling on the Cape Henlopen Pier. Cut mullet or clams worked for
the tasty red hake. Stripers were taken by casters tossing 3 and 4 inch
Storm Shads where Canary Creek opens up into Roosevelt Inlet."

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on Nov 23rd:

....With the Thanksgiving holiday right around the corner and the 2011
fishing season finally starting to wind down the fishing here at the Wharf
has been pretty decent with the Stripers, Sea Bass and the Tautog. We have
continued to have some great success with all three fisheries on just about
every trip we have made.

....The first trip we got out was on Wednesday with Capt. H.D. at the helm
for the Sea Bass trip. With a very light rail and a decent Ocean Capt. H
ventured off to wrecks in the 15 to 20 fathom range and was rewarded with
limit catches of the tasty Bass for everyone on board including the crew.
Meanwhile both the Tog and the Stripers were biting rather well real close
to home for the private charter boats chasing them around in the rain while
I was chasing after the deer.

....Our 2011 season is most certainly winding down now with the holidays
upon us. This is our last week of trying to run seven days a week. After
Thanksgiving we will only be sailing on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Mondays
with the Tog and the Striper trips. We will continue with the Sea Bass
schedule the way it is until the fish push further offshore forcing a longer
trip. Sea Bass Trips will be running on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Reservations are not required but are advised.

If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf
or you would like to book a private charter or reserve space on a special
trip please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA.

Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck,
inlet and trolling trips. Here's a couple of his reports from this past
week: "11/20/11 Same game plan as yesterday with the very same crew.
Conditions were much more sporty even though the forecast was for calm seas.
The current was running much harder today and the bite, much slower. Moved
around several time trying to keep these guys on the fish. With sixty
minutes left in the day the Tog limit was reached. Today, we did keep a few
Tog at 15" but all the others were 16"+. Back in the slip with twenty Tog
and around twenty five Sea bass. Largest two Tog of the day were 8.5 and 12
lb. both caught by..... yep, the same guy as yesterday, Andrew.

11/19/11 A crew of four from the empire state looking for Tog....Sea Bass
too. Action was stready throughout the day for both species with only a few
"downtimes". This crew had a self emposed Tog size limit of 16" vs
Maryland's limit of 14"...I can't say enough good things about this crew and
their concern about future of Tog fishing. Back in the slip with a limit of
Tog and about twenty Sea Bass. Largest Tog of the day was 6.5 lbs caught by
Andrew.

11/18/11 Out with a crew of three brothers from NJ for a day of "wreckin".
Sea Bass bite started off slow but turned on strong after about an hour.
Size was a little off, but thanks to a nice Tog every now and then, and
these guys went back to Jersey with several nice fish fry's. In the slip
with twenty five Sea Bass and eight Tog.

James A. Donofrio, executive director of the Recreational Fishing
Alliance
has been actively working on the fisheries crisis. The RFA believes the
future of our fisheries is dependent on fixing the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery
Conservation and Management Act which has laid down strict time-frames that
do not take into account livelihoods and that a fishery is rebounding
steadily.

Maryland Fishing License

Anglers fishing in Ocean City will need to purchase a saltwater fishing
license. This license will cover both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastal
waters and surf of Ocean City and Assateague Island. Yes, this includes surf
fishing. If you already have a Chesapeake Bay Saltwater license you are good
to go! Anglers will be able to purchase the license online. The
license you want to choose is "Bay and Coastal Sport" You can either choose
a year-round or 7-day. The online site will add on a small convenience fee.
The state has set the tackle stores up with paper licenses so we can do your
licenses in our stores.
If you know you are coming to Ocean City, and you want to get it done ahead
of time you can
also call a toll free number (1-800-918-2870)
or print and mail in an application. Boat
Licenses: $50 and everyone on your boat can go
fishing without a license. You will get a personal license along with your
boat license, so you can go shore fishing as well. They will send you your
sticker for your boat in the mail. If you come to our stores, we have the
stickers.

Mail the application to their main office:

Maryland Dept. of Natural resources
Annapolis Service Center
P.O. Box 1869
1804 West Street, Suite 300
Annapolis, MD 21401

If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat
License, you don't have to buy a license, but you do have to register online. This
is free but cannot be done over the phone. (The state says it has no money
for a phone line.) Print out your number and keep an id with
you when you go fishing. You can also download it to your smart phone and
show it to the DNR officer.
It only takes a couple minutes. If you have no printer or smart phone, write
down the authorization number.

Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license,
it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA licence
you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each
state can "try" to figure out "how many" fish are being caught in their own
individual states. (VA Free
Registry)

If you want to go fishing in Ocean City without a license, your choices will
be the "Oceanic Pier" or to go fishing on a party or charter boat. You can
also go crabbing and clamming in Ocean City without a license. Or you can
fish off your own private dock.

Senior citizens 65 and older. Cost is $5 if you have a MD driver's license
and are a resident of MD,
but if you are a non-resident there is no break. No break for boat licenses
either. $50 resident or non-resident,
plus around $3 for the internet fees.

Contact Info
If you have any questions regarding Maryland's sport fishing license
requirements, you may contact Fisheries Service via e mail:
customerservice@dnr.state.md.us or by calling (410-656-9526).

Following is the fee schedule for 2011:

Senior License (year round) - $5.00
Resident License (year round) - $15.00
Resident License (7-day) - $6.00
Non-resident (year round) - $22.50
Non- resident (7-day) - $12.00
Pleasure Boat Decal (covers everyone on boat - year round) - $50.00
Commercial Fishing Pier License (year round) - $290.00

No license is required for:
Boat decal passengers
Those fishing in "free fishing" areas

Anglers under 16 years old
Anglers fishing on a licensed charter, party or guide boat
Anglers fishing commercially under a valid license
