Ocean City Maryland & Assateague Island - Delaware Beaches - Ocean n Bay Fishing Report
By Sue Foster, Oyster Bay Tackle Shop, Ocean City MD - Fenwick Island DE
April 18th, 2011
Fishing Report by Sue Foster
Water Temperature (WTMP): 48.0 °F°
First flounder of the season was caught on Sunday! Two keeper stripers were
caught in the Inlet! Black drum were caught on Assateague! Party boats are
catching BIG tautog when they get out. Flounder season is now open in MD and
DEL. Both states are 18-inches.
(Please read the info about the new MD Saltwater License at the end of this
report. The easiest way to buy your license is call the toll free number.
You can call, write down a confirmation number and fish right away. Year
round licenses and stickers will be mailed to you. We have called and
tested this number. The people are fast and very friendly! 1-800-918-2870)
If you want to buy and print your license online, I have all the links where
you can do this at bottom of this report. Or, I will be happy to print you a
license at Oyster Bay Tackle from the public website if you like. (Please
use the toll-free number for 7-day licenses.) Keep in mind that Easter
Weekend might be busy and you will have to wait or use the toll-free
number.) Fenwick Tackle is busy doing Delaware licenses, so please come to
Oyster Bay Tackle for MD licenses. Please read all the details in the
paragraphs at the end of this report. Please, don't spend $15 on the Federal
Registry to fish inshore. You will be wasting your $15! (And remember, we
didn't make the new laws, and we are not making one dime on printing MD
licenses, so please, if you come in to Oyster Bay to get a license printed,
contribute to the "charity jar" or buy something in our store.) If you have
questions call us at Oyster Bay Tackle at 410-524-3433 or e-mail me at
sue@oysterbaytackle.com. I'll be glad to help you.

LATE BREAKING ADDITION - Monday 11:37 AM . From Capt. Skip www.OceanCityfishing.com
This is an enquiry e-mail via http://oysterbaytackle.com/ from:
Capt. Skip Maguire
Hi Sue, Things are starting to happen in the downtown O.C. fishing scene.
We had several reports of tog caught at 4th, 5th, and 6th streets, and the
Rt. 50 Bridge. Anglers from boats caught tog at the south jetty, mostly on
the north side. Seems the best bait is live green crabs. Some anglers are
using frozen sand fleas with success. Haven't heard much about stripers or
blues from the Rt. 50 bridge, but did hear that there was blues up in the
thorofare. I would think with the weather report for this coming week,
blues and stripers will both make there appearance around the Rt.50 Bridge
and in the inlet, lets keep our fingers crossed. I finally got out fishing
this past week on Thursday, with my good friend Capt. J.W. Powell. We
caught several under sized tog at the south jetty and at Martha's Landing.
We tried fishing the tip of the south jetty for stripers but only had a
few lite hits, but no hook-ups. We did mark a lot of fish though, that's a
good sign. The temp was 50, I
think if it goes up a few more degrees they will turn on. We decided to go
behind Assategue Island looking for warmer water. It was a smart decision,
I ended up hooking up with 2 nice stripers 32 and 35 inches, both were
caught on live bait. I plan on getting out more this week and hope to get
into them again. I have several charters this week for flounder and
stripers, will report on those next week. I would like to let everyone
know that Capt. J.W. Powell will now be chartering and guiding for Skip's
Charter and Guide Service. He's one of O.C best wreck and reef fisherman,
and will put you on the stripers too. We are booking up quick for the
spring striper season, but we do have some days open, so give us a call.
Here at Skip's Charter and Guide Service we have 4 boats available from 24
to 42 ft. with some of Ocean City's most experienced captains and guides.
Give me a call at 410-289-FISH(3474)or 410-430-5436 and lets talk fishing.

Still no stripers reported from the Assateague surf. It's interesting, but
a number of black drum have been caught from the Assateague surf. Allen
Sklar released an estimated 50-60 pounder last week. "Coop" apparently has
landed as many as 10 according to Stripers Online forum. Allen's picture is
in our Photo Gallery under Surf
Photos.. The conditions over the weekend were terrible and no fishing
was going on.
"Martzy" tried it on Sunday. He posted: "Fished AI today from 6:30am -
11:00am without a bump, took 10oz to hold."
Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

rigs? We have plenty in our shops or buy online! Shop Online
If you find it hard to hold bottom try using a "
sputnik sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker. I always
carry a selection of sputnik sinkers in my tackle box.
Friday and Saturday were terrible. Gusting winds kept most shopping for
fishing gear rather than fishing. Water temps creeped up a few more degrees,
so by this weekend we should see something more!
Many people are fishing for tautog. Outgoing water when the sun is shining
is your best bet. Fish live green crabs or frozen sand fleas. Flounder
season is open! 'Course nobody could get out there opening day. But Tommy
Fowler caught the first flounder of the season, and also caught bluefish!
We got some live minnows in now.
Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman reports: SUNDAY, April 17, 2011 - How's this for you. Tommy
Fowler of North Bay Marina caught the last reported flounder of the year in
2010 and, today caught the first reported flounder of 2011. Tommy caught the
18.25-inch flattie up in the Thorofare on a Gulp/minnow combination. Tommy
caught it on the first cast of the year. Tommy also reported bluefish in the
Thorofare. The fish were around 20-inches.
SATURDAY, April 16, 2011 - Well, unfortunately the opening day of flounder
season went off with a whimper. Didn't hear of any catches. Water temp
hovered around 50-degrees.
FRIDAY, April 15, 2011 - According to the Roffer's report, there are
yellowfin tuna in the deeper sections of Washington and Norfolk Canyons.
Eddy has moved from Cape Hatteras, where anglers were hooking yellowfins and
wahoo in 74-degree water. Water is now 66-67 degrees. They don't expect the
water to hang around for more than a week. More of their free analysis can
be found at www.roffs.com.
THURSDAY, April 14, 2011 - Capt. Skip Maguire of Skip's Bait & Tackle
brought by the first keeper striped bass to his the dock this year. The fish
were caught on live bait in the bay behind Assategue Island. The largest
striper measured 35-inches and weighed 18 lbs. His second keeper measured
32-inches and weighed 11.5 lbs. Congratulations Skip!
WEDNESDAY, April 13, 2011 - Water temperature in the OC Inlet is 50-degrees,
ripe for some stripers that have been moving north along Assateague Island
over the last week. A few have been hooked around the bridges. Tautog are
being caught arounfd the rocks off Martha's Landing. Black drum are also
being hooked by surfcasters.
Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) is now open. This is the one place in Ocean City
you can fish without a license since they have a "pier license." We talked
to Teddy Sunday afternoon and he reported a few skates, tautog, and blowfish
so far. The hours on the pier are around 9-8ish depending on the weather.
Teddy said they will try turning on the lights at night soon to see if
anything comes up! He did hear from an angler that caught and released a
25-inch striper from the 3rd Street bulkhead on a live minnow. J.J. wants
everyone to know that when you come to the pier, go to the Oceanic Motel and
park, then come buy your ticket and he will give you a pass for your car.
There is also a big municipal pay lot about a block away from the pier. Call
the Oceanic Pier at 410-289-2602 for parking details.
Clark from Old Inlet (302-227-7974) posted on April 12th: "By our
unofficial count, a total of 7 keeper stripers have come from the Inlet in
the the season that just will not get started. Bucktails have been working
best. We did see a 25" flounder from the Indian River bay over the weekend.
Bill Sports Center (302-645-7654) reports a good thing. Your FIN number
comes automaticly with your DE Fishing Licence now. Flounder are in the
Indian River Inlet, bay, and Cape Henelopen State Pier. Decent size tautog
are biting offshore at the Reef Sites and in the Delaware Bay. Outer Wall in
the Delaware Bay are starting to see tautog now. Won't be long before we
have some at the rocks at Indian River Inlet. Perch are biting in the
Broadkill River along with some stripers.

Hi All,
Snuck in 2 of 3 days scheduled; Thursday & Friday were as pretty as the
ocean gets.
Very nice sea conditions don't always make for the best fishing but it's a
dern-sight better than slow fishing on a rough day!
Eleven hour trip ran a tad long. Most of it was spent with 20 ounce
sinkers--and not because it was extraordinarily deep either; current was
screaming.
Gregg stepped-up with a 14 1/4 pound tog to take the money--Fish ate half a
spider crab. Saw a few other decent tog around the rail, some dinner-sized
and, surprisingly, another decent showing of cod.
The recreational catch-estimates' legacy of foolishness is renewed &
reaffirmed too as sea bass begin to trickle-in from winter haunts. We had to
throw back a handful of jumbo sea bass because of regulations that are
absolutely, positively s-l-o-w-i-n-g partyboat ticket sales & cbass
catches, yet are somehow creating mega-spikes of succesful private boat
cbass fishing.
Almost as an organ donor's last selfless act; Our few cbass throwbacks were
tagged and thrown back while the recreational fishery twitches in a
statistical noose..
Friday's trip was to more traditional togging grounds.
Some clients learned frustration first-hand then triumphed in success.
If the bite pleased: Wonderful.
However, those toggers more deeply afflicted, more enamored of the quest for
big fish might have found it lacking. Some certainly enjoyed our long-trip
the day before far-more despite having seen less action..
Certainly wasn't bad fishing Friday. Had a 10 1/4 and a 9 pounder as pool
contenders, had lots&lots&lots of bites with about half of the fish
throwbacks; caught numerous limits.
Nice. Our first sign of spring toggin'..
When the bite is on --when we're catching good-- I'll encourage the release
of legal females up to 16 inches & even bigger, but no longer the super
jumbos we used to put back: It is now my opinion that the concept of "oldest
fish as super-spawner" flies against the iron-clad rule that spawning
productivity increases in a fished population.
If you want to tag one, however, that's fine too..

Capt. Victor on the Ocean
Princess e-mailed in his report from April 18th: "Well we were hoping to
have a good weekend fishing but the weather had
decided differently. Saturday brought heavy winds with gusts to 40mph and
also high winds on Sunday. We ended up cancelling both days of fishing.
Seems like it always blows when we want to go fishing. We have scheduled
two 12 hour fishing trips. The first one is on opening day of sea bass
May 22nd and the second is June 3rd. The cost is the same as last year
$95.00 plus tax per person. The boat will leave at 6am and return at 6pm.
You must have a reservation for these trips. We have already started
selling tickets so don't wait too long if you would like to go. Currently
the Ocean Princess is fishing every Saturday and Sunday 7am to 3pm,
however we will not be fishing on Saturday April 30. We will be fishing
Sunday May 1st. Make sure you call 410-289-6226 for a reservation if you
would like to go fishing."

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz of the "Thelma Dale V" Reports from Fisherman's Wharf
on April 13th:
"I really can't complain too much about the fishing either Saturday or
Sunday, we actually had our moments with biting fish, it's just that I'm
spoiled I guess to past performances at this time of the year and I really
like to see everyone get in on the action. Our Spring limit on the Tog now
while these fish are spawning is three fish at a minimum of 15 inches and
while I actually saw a good number of skilled or lucky anglers land their
limit with ease on both trips. I also saw several skilled anglers and
frustrated anglers shaking their heads wondering what they were doing wrong.
Even relentless patience and diligence at the rail didn't always prevail
this weekend, these fish were difficult to figure out and even harder to
catch!
Anyone that enjoys fishing for Tog knows that they are never really the
easiest fish to catch even on the grandest of days, I have often said if
they bit all the time like an ordinary fish that they would have been over
fished and on the endangered species list or all gone a long time ago! I'm
not sure if it's the water temperature or the phases of the tides or just
what, but recently these fish have really been biting light the majority of
the time. We have seen a few times where they bit more typical or aggressive
for their nature but they have been very delicate in the way they have been
feeding even with the clam, normally they will suck a piece clam down in the
colder water but it almost seems like they are just barely touching it and
then moving on. It is certainly a challenge!
We did see some fairly decent sized fish over the weekend which I have to
take as a very good sign, I think the average size was easily four pounds or
more and the biggest fish was over seven and eight pounds on both days.
Throwback action was intermittent, at times it seemed like we couldn't find
a keeper and other times nearly every fish that came aboard went right in
the box not even needing a measurement. Over all the fishing would be best
described by me as slow but at a fairly steady pick. I really think it will
become much better as these water temperatures continue to climb and
eventually stabilize. Our outlook for catching Tog over the next few weeks
is certainly good in my opinion.
Striper fishing up in the Bay had it's ups and downs last week also. By mid
week these fish had the Hot Shots scratching their noggins wondering what
was going on. Rock were very difficult to locate and weren't always biting
when you found them. As the week came to an end, the fish turned on again
and most of the guys were reporting full boat limits with impressive sized
fish by days end on Sunday. The first few Drumfish have also fallen to a
hook and line over the past week and I understand they are starting to show
up more and more frequently in the gill nets on both sides of the Bay.
Drumfish normally start to bite fairly steady once that water temperature
climbs above 52 degrees. It won't be long!
I am going to continue with the four day a week schedule for a while longer;
at least one more week before we try to sail daily. We will be anchoring
over wrecks and artificial reefs fishing primarily for Tautog, clams and
crabs will be supplied. We sail at 7:00 a.m. and we will return around 4:00
p.m. We are also booking private charters now for Stripers, Drum or Tog on
the Lewestown Lady with plenty of open dates available if you want to get in
on this inshore sport fishing option.
If you would like any more information about trips sailing out of the Wharf
or you would like to reserve space for a special trip or to book a private
charter please give us a call at (302) 645-TUNA."

Capt. Rick Yakimowicz
Thelma Dale V
catchfish@verizon.net"
Lewes Harbour Marina gives us the reports on 4/14:
"Tautog action has been pretty consistent over artificial reefs in Delaware
Bay. Sites 6 and 7 near Brown Shoal have been productive, but tog also came
from up the Bay at Site 4, and on the Broadkill Slough site, number 5.
Captain Chet's toggers on the Lil' Angler culled a limit of nice keepers
from a catch of several fish on Wednesday. Many of the blackfish were just
shy of the 15 inch minimum. The tog took green crabs, clams and shrimp.
Stanley Raffensberger from Halifax, PA reeled in an 8.28 pound citation
winner. A few tog have been pulled from the rocks of the Outer Wall, and
that bite will improve with warming water temps. A handful of flounder came
from Lewes Canal during the past week. Cut herring, minnows, shiners and
Gulp got the attention of sluggish flatties. A few flounder were also hooked
by fishermen on the rails of Cape Henlopen Pier using small jigs tipped with
herring at night. Again, that catching will pick up as temperatures rise. "
Capt.Dan Stauffer (866-623-4746) of the Fin Chaser does wreck,
inlet and trolling trips. He says: "Fin Chaser's 2011 season will begin on
April 22nd. We will be fishing for Tog & Cod until May 22nd at which time
Sea Bass will open and they will be added to our target. Shark Trips begin
in early June and Offshore Tuna Trips around the 20th of June. Reservations
have been very heavy, if you're considering a trip, you should reserve your
day ASAP."

has been actively working on the fisheries crisis. The RFA believes the

do not take into account livelihoods and that a fishery is rebounding

Maryland Fishing License
Anglers fishing in Ocean City will need to purchase a saltwater fishing
license. This license will cover both the Chesapeake Bay and the coastal
waters and surf of Ocean City and Assateague Island. Yes, this includes surf
fishing. If you already have a Chesapeake Bay Saltwater license you are good
to go! Anglers will be able to purchase the license online. The
license you want to choose is "Bay and Coastal Sport" You can either choose
a year-round or 7-day. The online site will add on a small convenience fee,
but so will the tackle stores
until the state sets us up. Unfortunately, this may not happen until
sometime this summer.
Oyster Bay Tackle will be glad to do your
fishing license for you, but we have to go to the same web site you would,
and use your credit card
to purchase a license for you until the state sets us up. SO, if you know
you are coming to Ocean City, it
would be to your advantage to get it done ahead of time. Right now, you can
also call a toll free number (1-800-918-2870)
or print and mail in an application (the
least expensive way to go!) If you know you are going to buy a boat license,
this would be a really good way to go. $50 and everyone on your boat can go
fishing without a license. You will get a personal license along with your
boat license, so you can go shore fishing as well. They will send you your
sticker for your boat in the mail.
Mail the application to their main office:
Maryland Dept. of Natural resources
Annapolis Service Center
P.O. Box 1869
1804 West Street, Suite 300
Annapolis, MD 21401
If you are going to be fishing on a private boat with someone who has a Boat
License, you don't have to buy a license, but you do have to register online. This
is free but cannot be done over the phone. (The state says it has no money
for a phone line.) So do it now. Do it anytime. But don't wait till you get
to Ocean City without a computer. Print out your number and keep an id with
you when you go fishing. It only takes a couple minutes. If you get in a
bind, we
can also do this for you at Oyster Bay Tackle.
Another interesting note about the license is that if you buy a VA license,
it is good in MD, and vice versa. If you are fishing in MD with a VA licence
you do need to register with MD online. Again, this is free. This is so each
state can "try" to figure out "how many" fish are being caught in their own
individual states. (VA Free
Registry)
If you want to go fishing in Ocean City without a license, your choices will
be the "Oceanic Pier" or to go fishing on a party or charter boat. You can
also go crabbing and clamming in Ocean City without a license. Or you can
fish off your own private dock.
Senior citizens 65 and older. Cost is $5 if you have a MD driver's license
and are a resident of MD,
but if you are a non-resident there is no break. No break for boat licenses
either. $50 resident or non-resident,
plus around $3 for the internet fees.
