Fishing Report by Sue Foster

Water Temperature (WTMP): 75.4°F

Hurricane Earl gave us some swells, dirty water, and bluefish! Yes, fall is
just around the corner when we see finger mullet hopping in the surf and the
inlets, and blues started biting. Flounder fishing was a bit off because of
the dirty water conditions, but surprisingly anglers caught some the next
day after the storm. Spot are still around, some croaker, tautog, and
sharks. Sea bass picked up big time. More larger flounder offshore.

Before Hurricane Earl we had quite a few reports of bluefish. Right after
the storm, the news was mostly sharks. Fresh finger mullet were available
right after the storm, and anglers said they saw little fish breaking in the
ocean, which were probably finger mullet. Hurricane Earl did give us some
"hard to hold" fishing conditions. Try using a " sputnik
sinker if you can't hold with a regular surf sinker.

Bill Klein of "Stripers Online" reports "September already, and another
summer season fades into the rearview mirror. All still pretty much on the
quiet side locally, but things should be looking up soon with any luck at
all. The current run of cooler temps has been most welcome, and hopefully a
harbinger of some fine autumn weather headed our way before too much
longer."

Assateague beach was closed right after the storm. Before the blow anglers
caught a mixture of sharks, spot, flounder, and some bluefish.

David Blevins of Wye River e-mailed in his report from Assateague last
Friday: "Thought I would share a quick report from Friday on Assateague. My
family and I drove out about a half mile past the Bull Pen and had a great
day fishing. We caught plenty of fish and they were all on a finger mullet
rig. All fish were catch and release." They caught bluefish, flounder, and
kingfish.

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

Capt. Bobby Gower of the " Bay Bee
reports slow fishing right after the storm because the water was so dirty.
He only had one keeper on Saturday with only a few throwbacks. He hopes
this next week will be better after the water clears up.
