Fishing Report by Sue Foster

Water Temperature (WTMP): 74.7°F

Some bigger flounder were caught this week along with catches of sheepshead
and puppy drum. Oceanic Pier, Rt. 50 Bridge, 3rd Street Bulkhead and Homer
Gudelsky Park all had flounder action. Bluefish action picked up from the
Rt. 50 Bridge this week. One weighed in went 11 pounds! Stripers were caught
around the Rt. 50 Bridge. In the surf, bluefish were reported! Plus, we're
still having summertime action with kingfish, spot, croaker, sharks (big and
small) and big rays. Offshore picked up on sea bass and flounder. Dolphin
and marlin fishing was very good.

The surf picked up with some bluefish this week! Our friend "Gary" who
fishes the Delaware State Park caught some up to 18-inches in finger mullet.
Another angler reported small snapper blues right out front of Oyster Bay
Tackle, also on finger mullet. Others are still catching kingfish, spot, and
croaker with small hooks and bloodworms or artificial bloodworm combined
with a little strip of bunker or box squid. We are probably looking at some
surge from the offshore hurricanes which will give us some "hard to hold"
fishing conditions by Thursday. Try using a " sputnik
sinker." There's still some big sharks out there and the usual little
sand sharks for the kids to catch. For larger sharks, bunker fillet, chuck
of mackerel or whole squid on a larger hook is a good bait. A kingfish or
spot head is excellent shark bait. Croaker take a small to medium sized
hook with any kind of cut bait or worm. Croaker also like clam. I like a
combination bait of worm (real or fake) and cut bait. Look around, and
find yourself a hole on the beach. Flat beaches don't produce.

We got a picture from Rochelle Roemer, whose friend, Mark Parsons caught and
released a cobia from the Delaware Surf last week. Rochelle e-mailed in:
"The fish was caught in the surf at Fenwick State Park on 8/21/10 using a 11
foot pole and bunker for bait. We got the bait at the Fenwick tackle shop.
It was quite exciting and took Mark about 30 minutes to bring onto the
beach. We had quite a crowd around us watching the show. Fisherman was Mark
Parsons from Perkasie, Pa. We were told this was a Cobia and appeared to be
between 50 and 60 pounds. We did release it back into the water for another
day."

Bill Klein of "Stripers Online" reports.... of Assateague: "As per the
usual, it's a pretty slow pick from the local waters, settled on in to our
familiar summer doldrums. The tasty kingfish and spot have been showing in
fairly steady numbers and there's no shortage of sharks for those so
inclined."

"LuckyOC" posted about his day on the beach on Saturday: "Sharks were
around, got a 3-4ft dusky, and had a run in with a demon of the deep... I
knew when the hit occurred that it would be short lived, cause it was the
only rig that i had on that wasn't wire... but whatever it was it peeled 200
yards of line in about 15 seconds. When i got to the rod, line was almost
gone, i then forgot to thumb the spool and not the line, and burnt my thumb
lol... i did stop what ever it was and soon there after it bit through the
mono. The panfish bite was off, didn't manage one..."

"Chapa" posted on the 23rd about his lucky Cobia catch from the surf:
"Getting skunked and wrapping it all up. It was another long day of nothing.
I picked up my last rod and started reeling in when it took off towards
England. Here's the thing. I was using a 4/O hook with 3 little sand fleas.
I figured to catch some small pups or round heads for dinner. After about 15
min I saw Mr. Brown (cobia). The question crossed my mind. Is it foul
hooked? Did this fish really eat 3 small little sand fleas? Is the 4/O hook
going to hold? another 20 min and here it is. My catch from the surf and on
gear that was meant for small stuff."

Well, Mr. Cobia is some good eating! Enjoy!

I did hear of more blues in the surf this past week in the Delaware State
Park. Not large, but at least some were caught. Finger mullet is starting to
show up, so that should bring in more blues.

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

Route 50 Bridge continues to have reports of bluefishing at night with
Got-cha Plugs. There were also a lot of flounder caught from the Bridge. A
load of short stripers were reported Friday night.

We at Oyster Bay Tackle and Fenwick Tackle saw some nice fish this week.
Andrew McMullen e-mailed in his picture and report: "Last Weekend was a
GREAT Weekend of fishing. I caught my first Striper, Triggerfish and
Sheepshead. If that wasn't enough the Sheepshead and Flounder were citation
sizes. Needless to say I had a lot of fun. Both fish were caught on 8/21
in Ocean City. I'm from Gap, PA. The flounder was 25" and weighed 7.2
lbs. It was caught near Gudelsky Park on a jig and Gulp 4" Mullet. The
Sheepshead was 25 1/2 " and weighed 11 lbs even. It was caught at the South
Jetty on green crab."

Frank Usavage II e-mailed in a picture and report: "4 year old Frankie
Usavage caught a nice Blue in the "great bluefish blitz" of Aug 23rd at the
Rt. 50 bridge during the incoming night tide. Thanks to the advice from Sue
Foster of Oysterbay Bait and Tackle and Sue's Monday Morning fishing report.

Derek Hartlove of New Freedom PA was in the midst of the blitz! He came into
Fenwick Tackle with an 11 pound 33 1/2 inch bluefish caught from the Route
50 Bridge on Monday the 23rd.

Flounder were biting that day too. Brandon Day came into Fenwick Tackle with
his grandma, Iris and his sister McKenna from Ocean City to get his picture
snapped with a 20-inch flounder he caught from the Rt. 50 Bridge on Monday
the 23rd.

The fish were really biting on Thurday!

Wayne McPartland of Lutherville, MD came into Oyster Bay Tackle with a 21
1/2, 9-pound Sheepshead from the South Jetty on live spot on Thursday.

John Burkhardt of Allentown, PA came in with a 22.5 inch, 9 1/2 pound
Sheepshead and a 26-inch 10 1/2 pound black drum caught from the South Jetty
on sandfleas.

Megan Johson of Perryville, MD with a 19-inch flounder caught from the Rt.
50 Bridge on live minnow .

Lou Hionis came into Fenwick Tackle with a 19-inch flounder and Jack McLoy
had a 23-inch flounder caught in the Ocean City Inlet on live bunker on
8/22/10

These pictures are in our Photo Gallery under Bay and
Inshore Photos.

Bill Bratton on Mifflintown, PA came into Fenwick Tackle with a 44-inch,
28.6 pound striper he caught on a rigged eel on 8/22/10. He caught this at
Indian River Inlet. Nice fish!

His picture is in our Delaware
Photo Gallery.

More striper action in Delaware by the Delaware Fly Club: FlyaboutSmith
forwarded his e-mail: "Rick, I fished my favorite location in the Canal this
morning and had 12 stripers between 16" & 20". They were caught on a #2
Kevins Killer, olive body and white tail. Also had one small flounder about
15". On Wednesday the fish were up in the cut on the high tide and I waited
3 hours for the tide to drop but with the full moon the tide did not drop
enough for the fish to come out to open water also I think the fish were
much larger on Wednesday. The were keyed in on a really big run of peanut
bunker. There was so much bait in the water that it was difficult picking
your line out of the water without snagging them. After fishing the Canal I
moved out to the ice breakers and fished with ( that nasty four letter
word ) and caught a couple of small sea bass and another small flounder."

Capt. Bobby Gower of the " Bay Bee
reports lots of throw backs on Thursday when the water was clear. After
that, the fishing for him was slower as the water got dirtier. He says the
smaller boats are able to get on top of structure, run their motor against
the tide and stay there to catch some keepers.
The anglers doing good are close to the bulkhead, close to the Bridge
pilings, and close to the Sea Wall. Dirty water stirs up the fishing. Bobby
says the cleaner water actually happened at the bottom of the low tide this
weekend.
