Fishing Report by Sue Foster
Water Temperature (WTMP): 55°F
Striper action is on! We had stripers weighed in from Ocean City beaches and
Homer Gudelsky Park. They hit Oceanic Pier Friday night. The Route 50 Bridge
saw big stripers as well as Indian River Inlet. Some anglers only caught
skates, while others had luck. It was all a matter of being in the right
place at the right time! Flounder fishing was slow. Some tautog were caught
inshore. Offshore tautog fishing was good.

Surf fishing picked up in Ocean City. We had sporadic bluefish action during
the week. One angler came in to say he caught a 32-incher at 61st Street. I
also had reports of bluefish from 42nd, 92nd, 75th.... Just scattered along.
No blitz, just one or two here and there. We heard lots of stories of
skates. THEN, on Saturday morning there was a STRIPER bite in north Ocean
City. Justin Lynch e-mailed in: "Attached are some pictures of the rockfish
I caught today. All caught on bunker chunks and heads. All 4 were caught
in North Ocean city right after low tide. Two of them were caught back to
back. As soon as I got the 1 unhooked I had another one taking a pole down.
And I caught one right before high tide all between 6am and 930am. 1 at
40", 39", and 2 at 37". "
Arthur C. Heuer of Crownsville, MD came into Oyster Bay Tackle on Sunday
morning with a 37-inch striper he caught from 135th Street surf in Ocean
City, MD on a sliver of bunker on a Kingfish Rig! He had another bite that
broke his little size #6 hook! Several other stripers were apparently
caught in this same area.
The striper blitz happened on Assateague mid-week, then slowed up a bit,
with some "skate-a-thons" happening on Saturday along with a couple reports
of stripers on Assateague early Saturday morning. Sunday was slow. David
Feilinger of Westminister, MD stopped by Oyster Bay Tackle to buy a new surf
rod and reel last Sunday afternoon. He went to Assateague that night and
came back on Monday morning to weigh in his 37-inch, 24 pound striper caught
from the Assateague surf on bunker.
All these pictures are in our Photo Gallery under Surf
Photos.
Dave Wood e-mailed in a wild story on April 26th: "Thanks for the info on
Assateague Island. Went out yesterday morning in the wind and heavy surf
with finger mullet. Caught and released 3
blue fish all about 22" and a single small flounder.
Ran a across a guy carrying off the beach a 30" striper in his cooler.
A couple other folks with me all asked what kind of bait he used,
what kind of rig... He laughed and said that he caught it with his
bare hands. Apparently the striper was chasing bait fish right up
onto the beach and right between this dude's legs. He managed to grab
it with both hands in ankle deep water. His wife was cracking up as
he relayed the story because the guy was screaming like a caveman. No
one else caught anything within site Saturday."
