Water Temperature (WTMP): 45.5 °F

Spring is here and we took our first fish picture this week, a nice striper!
Some tautog were caught from the bulkhead and inlet this weekend. A couple
stripers were caught from the surf in DE. First flounder and tautog were
caught from the Indian River area. Inshore anglers are catching fresh and
brackish water fish. Delaware Flounder Options are posted with a public
hearing on 3/23. Maryland has not made a decision on their flounder
size/season yet but we should know early this week.

We finally heard of some life in the surf. It was so pretty this weekend,
lots of people were out there trying for anything that would bite. We didn't
hear anything from Ocean City surf but....

GMinPA posted on Stripers Online: "Fished the outgoing tide Saturday, 3/20.
Landed one striper FROM THE SURF in DE on Saturday, she was a 28"-er. "

"No1" posted on Cafe Locale on Sunday: "Fished from the sand after the beach
grass planting in DEL. Fished the outgoing tide and through the turn of the
incoming. After mid-tide, landed this almost 29-incher striper on
bloodworm."

The big news is, we took our first picture of a striper. It wasn't caught in
the surf, but in the bay. Stuart Mumford of Bishopville, MD came into Oyster
Bay Tackle on Sunday with a 32-inch, 10 pound 8 ounce striper he caught
Saturday night in the Fenwick Ditch (the MD side) on cut bunker. His
picture is in our Photo Gallery under Inshore
Fishing Pictures.

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

Tautog! I saw lots of anglers trying for tautog this weekend as it was soooo
pretty. Ocean City popped up into the 70's. The bay waters warmed up a bit,
and apparently there were a few tautog biting at the bulkhead at 3rd Street
and the inlet. I didn't see any, but a gentleman e-mailed in that he saw
some being caught down along the bulkhead. Usually, the tautog bite on the
outgoing tide when the sun is shining this early in the season. Outgoing
water is much warmer than incoming water.

Clark from Old Inlet (302-227-7974) has great news: "First tautog of the
season caught in the Inlet on Saturday, March 20. News Flash!! First
flounder of the season reported in the Indian River Inlet. Caught on
Thursday 3/18 by Rich Butewicz of Ocean View. First tautog reported from
Ocean City Inlet!! Lets get this season started.
Flounder caught in Quinby, Virginia on Monday this week as well."
YEAAAAAA!

Thanks Clark!

Bill Sports Center (302-645-7654) reports on 3/16 and tells us about
fresh water trout: "Walt Bradford caught 2 rainbow trout at Newton Pond
using Berkley Power Bait. Flooding and muddy water has made trout fishing
more difficult than usual. Newton Pond, between Ellendale and Greenwood, and
Tidbury Pond near Dover has been stocked with trout. Another stocking will
take place March 18th."

Things are really starting to happen to the south of us. We heard of a few
flounder caught in Quinby, VA. We heard of some flounder caught on the
seaside around Oyster, VA. Usually these flounder bite on the last of the
outgoing tide when the water is the warmest.

Julie Ball tells us about striper fishing in
"The Virgina Beach Sport Fishing Report" on March 19, 2010

"....Boats targeting striped bass along the coast are finding hit and miss
action right now. The Virginia Beach Fishing Center reports boats are still
catching a few fish averaging to around 25-pounds. But remember you only
have until the end of the month to catch ocean stripers. These fish continue
to move into the Bay and towards the Rivers to spawn. "
