A lousy week of weather! Most of our fishing reports centered around tautog.
Last week's blue blitz in the surf was just that. Last week's... not to be
repeated this week due to weather conditions.... Anglers had a hard time
holding bottom in the surf most of the week. A couple nice stripers were
reported from Assateague, but that was about it! Most people trying the surf
got skunked. Delaware Bay stripers turned on with some good sized fish early
in the week. And offshore tautog fishing was good when the boats got out.

Most anglers fishing Assateague surf didn't catch anything but sharks and
skates, but rumor has it a 41-inch and a 46-incher was caught.

TBStriperKing posted on the 31st: "Fished Assateague surf today from 630-10
in the morning with only a few small dogfish. I also fished frequently
Thurs-Fri at various tides at the oc inlet and tried jigging some gulp
shrimp and sand eels with not even a bite. Not sure where the fish are. I
thought I'd at least pick up some schoolies. Only toggers were catching
fish. Waves were big early in the week but laid down a lot today."

Habor Tackle (410) 213-9365)reports on the 27th: "Announcing the 4th
Annual Assateague Striper Tournament, held on Assateague, with cash prizes,
and scheduled for November 21-22, 2009 sponsored by Harbor Tackle. If anyone
is interested call Harbor Tackle for more info.

Due to the weather, there has not been a lot to report. Small blues are in
the surf. I heard of a 36 inch striper taken at AI. The big blues and legal
stripers are on their way. A few of my customers are telling me they are
getting some big blues and stripers on the Delaware beaches. I'm still
hearing about some nice flounder. The Rt. 50 Bridge has produced some
stripers and there are some up around the Rt. 90 Bridge. Lots of tog being
caught and people are telling me the sizes are getting bigger. People are
fishing the Rt. 50 Bridge, the Inlet, between 2nd & 4th Streets, at the end
of 6th Street and at Stinky Beach for tog. Yesterday someone told me his
friend caught a 19 incher by 4th Street."

Many anglers ask about reading the beach when surf fishing. "Poppy" a very
good angler has posted another very good description with pictures on
Stripers Online. Check it out:
Reading the Beach He draws it out completely! If you're not catching
fish in the surf, you need to study this!

We at Oyster Bay and Fenwick didn't hear much from the surf except a couple
schoolie rockfish caught Wednesday afternoon. The surf has just been rough
and dirty. Looks like better weather coming this week by Tuesday. Let's keep
our fingers crossed. The fish are probably there... just can't get at
'em.... When the weather cooperates we have bluefish, stripers, and sharks
this time of year. (Two legal stripers that I know of were caught last
week.)

Bluefish bite on finger mullet and mullet
rigs or simply chunks of finger mullet or box squid on surf rigs.
Stripers bite chunks of mullet or bunker. Sharks take any kind of cut bait
or squid.

Oceanic Pier (410-289-2602) reported good tautog and flounder fishing. Of
course, you have to release the flounder! Richard says the pier will close
during the week and will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the rest
of the month. Richard wants everyone to know that when you come to the
pier, go to the Oceanic Motel and park, then come buy your ticket and he
will give you a pass for your car.

Bobby Gower on the party boat " Bay
Bee is fishing when the weather is decent. Striper fishing soon!

(The Bay Bee runs out of O.C. Fishing Center. Call 410-213-1121 for
reservations.

Striper fishing was still happening on the Route 50 Bridge, but the size
range was smaller this week. Lots of "schoolies," say the locals. There's
some keepers though, both day and night. Anglers have been working Gotcha
Plugs, Swimming Shad lures, and lead heads with soft bodies attached.
Five and Six Inch bodies seem to be the ticket. Anglers are also using live
eels and live spot.

Tautog! Some days when the weather is too windy to do anything else, tautog
is the only game in town. Tautog were biting good again this week. The Route
50 Bridge has been lined with anglers on the change of tides during the
daylight hours. The bulkhead along 2nd thru 4th Street, the end of the
Oceanic Pier, and the Ocean City Jetty and the Indian River Jetties all
produced tautog. Lots were throwbacks, but many "keepers" were reported.

"Juniorbasser" posted on Stripers Online on the 31st:
"Fished in OC twice this week for tog. Both days fishing was great. 3 of us
fished today and we had a blast. We had 6 over 5lb's 2 over 7 pounds. We had
about 40 fish between us. We always try to release females over 5lb's :yes,
but our 2 biggest were males. Here is some pics of our fish. My biggest went
a lil over 8lb's. No fish i like to eat more than some fresh tog!"

Larry Jock of the Coastal
Fisherman gives us a little fish report and sums up the week's weather.
"THE BAHIA ROCKTOBERFEST TOURNAMENT IS CANCELLED DUE TO POOR WEATHER.
Saturday, October 31, 2009 - Very windy today... gusting to 25 mph. Some
boats fishing in the Inlet. Some stripers were caught around the Rt. 50
Bridge during the outgoing tide. Thursday through Friday - Bad weather kept
almost everyone at the dock. Wednesday, October 28, 2009: Seas are still a
little roughed up from the recent storm, but some anglers did venture out of
the Inlet, returning with no luck. There are good schools of big bluefish
around the Bass Grounds. No stripers yet in the ocean. A lot of small
stripers are in the bay. Tuesday, October 27, 2009: Very nasty day today. A
lot of wind and rain. Some stripers have been caught off the beach in North
Ocean City during the past week. A 41-incher was caught off Assateague the
other day."

Clark from Old Inlet (302-227-7974) reports from Oct 26th: "Reports of
stripers on the troll in the Delaware Bay. Around the 8's and the Rips.
Stretch 25's. Fish up to 40 inches!! Bluefish up to 35 inches on the beach
over the weekend. (Last weekend). Also, had a report of a 13 pounder out at
B Buoy. Then we weighed a 10 pound 8 ounce blue caught in the Inlet on
Saturday. (Last Saturday). Whole mullet rigs are working best.
Plenty of short stripers in the Inlet. The daytime bite has been good with
bucktails and swim shads. Very good tautog fishing in the Inlet."

Thanks Clark!

Bill Sports Center (302-645-7654) reports on the 30th: "Tautog are biting
good at the Indian River Inlet, Massey's Landing, Wreck sites, Inner and
Outer Wall and the Haystacks in the Delaware Bay. Stripers are biting in the
Delaware Bay."

Anglers now need a DE Fishing License to fish, crab, and clam in DEL: The
state has published a very good
FAQ on the license requirement.

Individual Delaware Fishing Licenses are now available
online. We also sell them at our Fenwick Tackle Location.

This year, Delaware anglers will also need a F.I.N. number, similar to a
hunting H.I.P. number. It is free, very simple to get, but necessary. DNREC
has e-mailed us how to get it!

To obtain a F.I.N. number or for more
information, anglers may visit www.delaware-fin.com, or call 800-432-9228,
any time of day, any day of the week. Those needing live operator assistance
may call 866-447-4626 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (EST). "

Anglers are responsible for calling and getting this FIN number. We at
Fenwick Tackle sell fishing licenses, but the FIN number is the angler's
responsibility. You can get your FIN number in advance of your Fishing
License as well. So even if you plan to buy your fishing license at a tackle
store, you can get your FIN number anytime!!!! Just remember to write it
down and bring it with you!!! (You do have to update your FIN number every
year. In 2010 you need to go online and apply again. It only takes a couple
minutes. Simple, easy.... )

(Maryland will have a similar FIN number in the year 2010. It will be free.
We will give you info on that as the first of the year approaches. In the
year, 2011 we on the coast will have a pay license.) For more info on the FIN number go to
www.countmyfish.noaa.gov
