    Norfok Canyon

Keeping feet on dry land with Friday’s beautiful weather forecast was more then a few of us could bare. We were greeted with a beautiful sunrise at the ramp…

My Bait’s Dragon was splashed and after running through a flat calm inlet the bow was pointed towards Norfolk Canyon. Deep dropping was the plan of action and no sooner then the bait hit bottom at the first location in 330’, all rods bend over double. Unfortunately, Blueline tiles did not break the surface, only pesky spiny dogfish sharks. Drop after drop at location after location produced the same results. With numbers of spiny’s coming over the gunnel approaching that of the national debt, we tried a set of numbers in 830’ of water. Chrisy managed to produce the first quality fish (assuming you believe snapper blues are quality fish!), nonetheless, a new wave of enthusiasm sweep over the crew...

The next drop brought about yells when three red rosies were observed being cranking to the surface in the crystal clear water.

The hot spot in 840’quickly filled the kill box with the great tasting rosies...

Mixed in were blues and of course spiney’s, but their number decreased to one out of every six fish breaking the surface. The bait would not be on the bottom for then a minute before all hooks would head back to the surface with a mixed catch…

With everyone’s arms and hand hurting from literally cranking in miles of fishing line, it was Mo who gave new energy to continue dropping when he produced the first Golden Tile of the season with a bluefish tagging along for the ride to the surface...

It was a beautiful day offshore and unless you looked at the water temperature gauge, which read 43 degrees, any angler would thought it was a summer day with all the dolphin, whales and birds working around us for most of the day...

Six exhausted, but extremely happy anglers hit the ramp just as the sun was calling it another day. The 2010 mid-Atlantic offshore fishing season is here.

The blues had a feast if you waited too long as I did in this photo trying to fill the hooks with rosies. A long wind with no payoff!
