“Nice weather”- L.B.I. fishing report-11-13-09-By Bob Misak
According to the crew at Barnegat Light bait and tackle, this past few days saw some brutally brutal weather as guys on the beach did the best they could to hold bottom, and eventually hit the couches for a day or two. On Tuesday before the storm there were a good number of bass and blues weighed, with a new bluefish leader popping up as Spencer Gares nailed the first 15 lb. gator of the L.B.I. surf classic. Some bass and another round of bluefish hit the shops, and it brought the number of 30 lb. and over fish weighed to over 25. The L.B.I. derby hasn’t seen a finer start in years, with the fun being extended two more weeks to Dec. 6th this year. So we’re about halfway through and nearly 200 bass and over 150 blues have bent the scales on the five shops on L.B.I. Anyway, on Wednesday the weather started to turn and guys were looking forward to catching bass on the northeast blow. Wednesday I fished with a couple local crazies out on the sand bar in Barnegat Light, and we were walking ten ounces down the beach and getting sand blasted in the process. We managed a 15 lb. bass, but we earned it to say the least. Down on the south end some decent fish were caught with our own Rob Vallone nailing a 20 lb. bass, and quite a few blues coming in as well by the die hard crazy guys. On Thursday participation dropped off to nothing with 50 plus gales blowing, and you couldn’t hold bottom with a bowling ball. Not many fish came in, but after this storm I expect the action as well as the participation will pick up where it left off.
Outside the inlet Tuesday proved to be a banner day with a pod of 10 to 20 lb. bass hanging around the Harvey Cedars area all day long. Fred Imhoff gave me a lift out there and with 30 spots on board we lit it up, catching a mess of 30 to 36 inch bass with a bunch of ten lb. blues mixed in. The ocean was eerily calm and the next morning we were getting a sand facial on the beach, that’s how quick the weather turned. I even saw the appearance of one the sharpies, Alan “bubbles Young” up on the 14th st. bar, and he took one look at the breakers and turned around and split. You know it’s rough when the swimmers won’t swim!
The guys fishing for tog over at the condo docks by the lighthouse are still doing quite well catching big white chins, and the way that place is situated, they’re out of the wind on the northeast blows. All the good togs are being caught on the outgoing tide, but green crabs are getting harder to come by. Check with the boys at B.L.B.T. for the availability of green crabs.
As far as the bay is concerned, nobody really wants to go get beat to death right now, but the bay is just full of bass and when this wind knocks down a bit the boats will be right behind it. So I’m going to say the next good bassin’ day will be Saturday when everybody is home and can get out and pilfer some more bass and “whopper choppers.” Good luck and great fishing.
