New jersey Summary 7-15
There is an interesting tournament running in New jersey. the garbage fish tournament. It runs the whole month. sea Robbins, skates and dogfish are the main categories. Right now the leading sea robin is 2 lb 6oz caught by Carmen Severino.the leading dogfish is 15lb 2oz by Greg Cudnik and the leading skate is 4 lb 12 oz by Patrick Brennan. weigh ins are at tackle shops from Brigantine to seaside Park. The Ocean Viking Showdown at South Jersey marina was won by the Viking Team led by Pat Healey. 58 White marlin and 6 Blue Marlin were caught and released and 85 tuna and 13 dolphin were brought to the weigh in dock.
The Ocean City Maryland Tuna tournament awarded 64,022 to the boat Topless for the biggest tuna (79lbs). The $162,057 for the total heaviest tuna catch went to Canyon Blues.
Sportfishermen.com will be providing live coverage of the weigh in at South Jersey marina for the Mid-Atlantic Tuna Tournament.
The tautog season starts again on Friday the 16th. There have been reports of good numbers og tog on the jetties. Just remember the limit is 1 fish at 14 inches, Most tackle shops will be stocking green crabs which are the best bait.
Striped Bass
The best fishing is at night. Dave at Absecon bay sportsman reports that the night bite at Brigantine has been good on eels.the daytime striper fishery has become very quiet statewide.
Canyons
The Spencer and Lindenkohl Canyons seem to be the hot spot for yellowfin so Far. Scattered blue and white marlin are being caught and released. Over Under Sportfishing in Avalon had a good trip to the Wilmington Canyon. the released a mako on the troll, picked up a 30 lb dolphin and trolled up 5 yellowfin on the west wall and SW corner of the canyon. Pex Machine in Barnegat Light reported that the Spencer and Lindekohl Canyons were crowded with boats. It seemed to be the weekly hot spot. They managed to put a large dolphin and 4 yellowfin in the boat.
The Sportfishermen.com boat was in the Wilmington and Spencer. The raised 2 large makos in the Wilmington on mackerel baits 200 feet down. They had 3 yellowfin and a fight with a large blue Marlin in the Spencer. Several other members have reported marlin in the Wilmington and catxches of yellowfin in the Lindenkohl and Spencer Canyons.
Blue marlin have been caught in the Wilmington. Brennan Marine reports that the Bonnie Lee got 13 yellowfin and a 20 lb Dolphin in the Lindenkohl. Other boats are also seeing yellowfin in the 50 :b range, dolphin and Marlin in the Lindenkohl. Green Machine and spreader bars are working well.
Fluke
Fluke are being caught in the back bays at Wildwood, mostly short with a few keepers thrown in. The fishing is going well at Reef Site 11 in Delaware Bay and at the Old Grounds. the keeper ratio is better at these spots.
The Duke of Fluke Tournament at Sterling Harbor in Wildwood was won by Adam Crouthamel on the Adam Bomb with a 5.48 Lb flounder. The 5 heaviest flounder award went to Capt Scott Pierce on the Duct Work with a total of 21.24 pounds.
Fluke are being caught in Somers Point in the back ba on Gulp and Minnows with several fish in the 4lb range Best fishing seems to be from Somers Point to the Longport toll bridge and On the Margate side from the Margate Bridge to the GE Inlet. .Bob Misak at Barnegat Light Bait and tackle reported that large fluke have shown up in the inlet near the lighthouse. He also reported that triggerfish have started to appear in the same area. Jim's Bait and tackle in Cape May reports good fluke fishing at reef site 11 in the bay and flounder alley up by Miah Maull light.
Wrecks.
The party boats fishing the wrecks and reefs have been catching a lot of seabass. They seem to be getting bigger as the summer goes on. They are also catching triggerfish, ling and some large fluke on the reefs.
Bluefin
Bluefin have been trolled up at the 19 fathom lump on cedar plugs, spreader bars and green mackines
