Few here probably knew or knew of Captain Melanie Boytos. She worked the shallows of Barnegat Bay and rarely passed the tip of the inlet jetties. Casting her BKD's to tiderunner weakfish and sight-casting to flats bass were her passions. Recently she passed quite suddenly, and the fishing world lost one of its greatest lovers. I knew Mel from working with her at The Fisherman, from the many seminars she did for me while with the magazine (her energy on or off the water could light up a room) and enjoyed fishing with her. She opened my eyes to the many bounties of Barnegat Bay and the pure fishing pleasure that came with it. She put me into my first ever live-spot bass along the rocks of Barnegat Inlet and we had always planned that she'd hook me into my first giant tiderunner weakie. If you knew her you were lucky and remember her fondly, if not you missed out on one of the greatest people the fishing world ever knew. I only hope that she's somewhere now working her BKD's to endless tiderunners and giant stripers. I know Barnegat Bay will fell a little empty next spring without her, my world already does.
Here's Mel Doing what she loved, we'll miss you....
