PROWLER5 - Tues. Jan. 24th, GOOD DAY TOGGING, PLUS COD AND LING, Capt. Scott

Hey gang. We were out today. Had a little bit of a roll on the way out, but it turned out to be a beautiful day. Did pretty good with the blackfish, nice ones plus cod and ling. Bob Stemler had a 9-1/2 lb. tog pool fish today. Looks good for tomorrow. Come on down. Green crabs supplied, white leggers available for a fee, heated handrails. Thanks, Capt. Scott.

When North Star captain Tim Barrus got back to the dock Friday evening, he said they had quite a few limits of tog and some mixed catches of tog and codfish. They had 10 or more tog that topped the 10-pound mark and cod that went 7-10 pounds.

He said a southerly swell made it a rough morning but the ocean calmed and conditions were "nice." Barrus said he moved around in 90 to 130 feet of water in the same area they caught the world record.

Paul Thompson is running Porgy IV from South Jersey Marina in Cape May. He has a trip scheduled for Sunday and another that was developing with phone calls from eager customers for today. Like many others, Thompson is amazed at the mild winter and continued decent fishing conditions.

"We caught them last weekend," Thompson said Friday. "The fish are still around."

Bob Matthews at Fisher-man's Den in Belmar Marina said Friday that surfcasters, actually mostly anglers fishing from jetties, are still getting striped bass. He added that up until a week ago they had some keepers, but lately they are mostly shorts less than 28 inches.

They used to say cod is king. Then, that fishery was pretty much non-existent around these parts for years.. It’s bounced back and so far this winter there have been decent reports from the bottom fishing boats targeting ling and cod. The cod fishing is definitely heating up.
Tips on Cod jigging

Obviously, the stripers don’t know it’s the end of January. Nor do they care.

The phenomenal bass fishing, especially from Long Branch to Asbury Park, has shown no signs of slowing down. Anglers are picking up keeper bass in nice numbers from late afternoon well into the the night.

“They’re not going away,” said Jack Monteiro of Surf Side Bait and Tackle in Long Branch. The fish are gorging on crabs, herring, mackerel and bunker. It’s a smorgasbord out there.”

During a normal January, many N.J. anglers would have already fled to Florida in order to wet a line, but both the weather and ocean waters have remained so mild that fishing continues at a good pace.

Relatively warm waters may have been holding back the winter mackerel run, but those fish cooperated Thursday for Capt. Rich Falcone on the Golden Eagle from Belmar. Capt. Jimmy Elliott, who’ll be running that boat Saturday, said anglers had from a half to full coolers of mostly medium mackerel, along with herring.

t's hard to believe, but there are still some stripers biting in the ocean. Joe Melillo reported from Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant that some were being caught frm Belmar to Long Branch, so I gave it a brief late afternoon try at Deal -- and actually caught a 20-inch bass on a Run-Off 2-ounce blue jig with a bucktail hook while casting from an ocean bulkhead. That was the latest I've ever caught a N.J. striper in January. January 13, 2005 in the Manasquan surf had been my previous record, and that one was even smaller at 17 to 18 inches on a Mambo Minnow
