New jersey Charter boat and bait and tackle reports, 9-9-10

    Saltwater Report: 9/7/2010
    Update 1:45PM
Smaller bluefish are being caught from the surf up and down the coast. Most are using metals that look like sand eels. Oh and by the way guess what the blues are spiting up? yeah you guessed it sand eels.

Well the last day of fluke came and went. People fishing the surf had a few keepers. Bluefish is now what you should be fishing for. They are being caught from the LBI, IBSP, Seaside and the Ortley Beach/Lavallette area surf. Let just say they are hitting everything but you can use mullet, peanut bunker, bunker or metals. Don't look for birds working because most are being caught without it. A few 30 inch or so stripers have been caught as well. Most are hitting clams but a few took peanut bunker. As far as boaters go only heard of a few keeper fluke being caught from the reefs as bluefish made it hard to fish for them.

    Bay / Jetty Report: 9/7/2010
Barnegat Bay, Great Bay and Tuckerton Bay most fished for blowfish, progies, or spot. Didn't hear of any keeper fluke being caught out of the bays on the last day. Snappers are still in the bays as well or you can go crabbing as it is still doing pretty good but some crabs are already starting to move. On a side note I have heard to many people say they have to do something about the fluke limit. All too many said the 17+ inch but not 18 inch fish were in great numbers. Hopefully next years regs will be better. Some even want slot fish and a smaller limit or smaller limit but longer season. If you fish fluke you should attend all the meetings about size limits for them and let your voice be heard.

    Fresh Water Report: 9/7/2010
I guess it being the last day before kids went back to school and people went back to work, it was a very busy day. That means a lot of people were fishing. I had reports from all over the place. Some caught a good mix of bass, pickeral, a few crappie, catfish, and sunnies. It don't matter what you catch or don't catch it's all about fun.

Grumpy's Bait and Tackle Fishing report, Seaside Park , 9-08-10

    Plenty of Blues!
    Wednesday, September, 8, 2010 at 5:00AM
Daybreak has seen some good fishing for several days now with blues in a wide range of sizes in a wide variety of places. They have not been on top so just because you dont see any birds working does not mean they arent there. Metals are the number one choice for early morning and bait has been producing the remainder of the day. We have been hearing of short bass for the last two days which is a real good sign of things to come!
The weather idiots are back to their old tricks. They think that they may have found a possible raindrop (gasp) - Partly sunny with a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm through midday. Breezy with highs in the upper 80s. West winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Chance of rain 20 percent. And, their chances of being right are........
I tried running an idea past Mike last night but he didnt notice it until I slowed it down to a walk.

Grump talks so fast I think he′s been in the energy drinks again. He had one guy in there so long yesterday I was beginning to think he worked here, but then the swat team burst in and rescued him. The man′s family was very grateful to have him back.................

    And now, back to fishing.
Now that the semi-official end of summer weekend is behind us, the crowds will thin, the traffic will lighten up and the fishing will be picking up! While we did have a very nice Bass weighed in yesterday, the Blues have center stage at the moment. There has been a good early morning bite in the Ortley/Lavallette area on metal. Assorted bait has been working all day and you can get a two pound blue, then back it up with a twelve pound. They are travelling without a bird escort in most cases so watch for minor disturbances or just blind cast.
We have another good looking day without interference from the weather idiots - Sunny. Highs in the mid 80s. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Take advantage of it if you can, the crowds went home last night.
Life is a trip, I bet ya Mike does not have a ticket!

Jingles Bait and Tackle fishing report, Beach Haven 9-08-10

    Wed Sept 8th

Cloudy, muggy morning. Air temp is 74 this morning with a water temp of 75. Small craft warnings are up and the wind is WSW at about 15. The winds are suppose to go W and be gusty.

Starting today in the month of September we will be closing at 3 on Wednesdays. Hopefully to get some fishing time in. Check our home page for store hours.

Weather man is talking about some chilly nights coming up. That may make the mullet run start as it getting close to that time of year.

    Tues Sept 7th

The radio was quiet today as far as boat chatter goes. The surf had a supper blow out tide at low tide but this morning it gave up some kingfish and small blues.

This morning it is 70 with a SSW wind about 8 and a water temp of 74.

Well there was nothing exciting about the last day of fluke fishing yesterday. This is 2 years in a row that the ocean fluking never got started in this area. The best was probably the week before Earl.

Talking with John Tichy who made an offshore trip on Sunday he told me that for Brian and him that there were plenty of dolphin in the Cartert and they were hungry and would eat anything. They also got bit off on a wahoo. He told me they saw no other boats and heard no one on the radio all day and the seas were great till the ride home.

    What to fish for now?

Lots of nice bluefish for Dexter yesterday. He went up toward Barnegat and had a dozen up to about 18 pounds.

New jersey Charter boat and bait and tackle reports, 9-9-10-1.jpg

Sea bass fishing continues to improve and there are more croakers around along with some weakfish up to about 15 inches.Surf fishing yesterday had small bluefish and some kingfish along with some keeper fluke on its last day. One that was lucky with those fluke was Robbie Vallone with 2 for the table. Stripers are making a little showing and one that showed on Sat nigh was a nice one caught on frozen bunker for Johnny Gomez caught right here in Beach Haven.

Don't forget crabbing it is great right now.

The Chum Bucket Fishing Report, West Creek, NJ, 8-08-10

    Hutchs' Report 9/7/10
    Written by Jim Hutchinson
    Wednesday, 08 September 2010

Now that fluke season has ended, the captains of the Beach Haven Charter fishing Association have several options available before the onset of striped bass season. In addition to offshore trips to the canyons for tuna, mahi, and other big sport fish, they are managing to find some other good fishing. Captain Carl Sheppard on the “Star Fish” found some good numbers of croakers in 70-feet of water off the red tower in Beach Haven. Mixed in with the croakers were some “spike” weakfish. When he moved out into 90-feet of water, his anglers found some keeper black sea bass along with some small fluke. He has also been picking up small bluefish and herring in the inlet on his way out and in from the ocean fishing. Captain Fran Verdi of the “Drop Off” says that he plans to concentrate his wreck fishing on sea bass. He notes the fish are coming off their spawning season and the bite has been showing a definite improvement over what it has been. He is continuing to run open boat trips in addition to his charters. Additional information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com or by calling 1-877-LBI-BHCFA begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1-877-LBI-BHCFA end_of_the_skype_highlighting (1-877-524-2423 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1-877-524-2423 end_of_the_skype_highlighting).

Fisherman's Headquarters Fishing Report, Ship Bottom, NJ, 9-08-10

    September 7, 2010

Received: Tuesday, September 07, 2010 3:14 PM Subject: Barnegat Fishing

Sunday, I got a last minute call from John Sean. He and his family were staying on LBI and wanted to end there summer with a bang. After talking over our options we opted to do a mixed bag bottom trip. Targeting porgy, sea bass, and possibly mixing in some fluke. Around 6:30 AM we check out the Garden Reef and some other local lumps that have been pretty good to us this year. With the west wind and seas 2 to 4ft we gave it a try. Some say there are no fish around after a hurricane, but that might be true if we had one. Earl who? We set up in about 50ft of water right on top of some good drops. As soon as we got our baits down about 35ft it was on. Catching some nice porgies about 10-15 inches and some monster sea bass. After the family had there cooler half full I suggested we try for some fluke being the season ended the next day. So we moved a little North. The water color was so-so but we got a couple of quick bites using the Gulp! New Penny Shrimp on a lead jig head. I also tipping it with a squid strip. After picking through some shorts we got two nice fluke. One was 4 pounds and the other was 5.5 pounds. On our way in we stopped by Barnegat Inlet with some grass shrimp, yes that's right striper! I thought it couldn't hurt. After a couple of handfuls of shrimp thrown in we were on some striper. They were a little small but none stop action.

When we got back to the dock we had a ton of good size porgies and sea bass. Also 4 good size fluke. This was a great day of fishing, it seemed wherever we stopped the bite was on. We hope for more days like this one. Great family and lots of fun.

    Fisherman Fred's Fishing Report, Hamilton,NJ, 9-09-10

    Saltwater Report: 9/8/2010
    Update 10:30AM
Small bluefish being caught from IBSP on metals and bait. Also had reports of small blitzes of them as well.

Not many fishing the surf but those who did had bluefish action on thin metals, mullet, peanut bunker, and bunker chunkers. Most of the action is not on the surface so don't look for the birds to be working. Just dead stick some bait is your best bet. When you do see the birds then throw metals. I also been hearing of some short stripers being caught on clams with a keeper thrown in the mix now and then.

    Bay / Jetty Report: 9/8/2010
With everyone back to work not many out fishing the bays. I did have a few reports from Barnegat Bay that blowfishing has been ok. Other then that snappers are all over the place and should start to move out of the bays soon. Crabbing is still doing good.

    Fresh Water Report: 9/8/2010
Looks like everyone is back to work as the morning was slow. Some fished the evening and caught some fish. Bass, sunnies and some catfish were caught. Everyone I talked to told me it was slow fishing and you had to work to catch fish. Remember until it is cool nights and cool days you have to fish a bit slower.

Scotts Bait and Tackle, Mystic Island,Fishing report 9-09-10

    Wednesday, September 8, 2010 /\/\/\ 5:37pm
Anglers were at a bare minimum today. It is post holiday week, fluke season is closed and the wind was blowing a bit. Spot fishing anglers were all that saved the day.
Crabbing customers made up the rest stores activity.
It's going to be a long wait for Striper season.
Some anglers will be able to shift gears and fish for tog, sea bass and croakers on the ocean. I hope that there is some continued tog success along the banks at the fish factory and Rutgers Building back in the Great Bay. Tog fishing is a lot of fun and if three guys are in the boat, three four pound tog can add up to a fair amount of fillets!

Fisherman's Headquarters Fishing Report, Ship Bottom, NJ, 9-09-10

    September 8, 2010

    3:15 PM

Finally a good kingfish bite, get bloods and go! So far today we have had reports from mid-island and the south end.
Live bloods are in short supply so act fast. Sorry, the bloods we currently have are small. The Fish-Bites bloodworm alternative will get'em too. Don't forget, if you want to kick that Fish-Bites up even more use the Bio-Edge Bloodworm which we have in Wand (paste stick) or Potion (liquid).

On the West side of Barnegat Bay there have been Blowfish and now a big influx of Spots. Go catch some eats and some bait at the same time.

Received: Sep 8, 2010 4:26 PM Subject: Hi Flier Sept. Open Boat Trips

The wind is going to blow hard for the next couple of days, 15 to 20 knot NW, gusting to 25 knots is the forecast for Thursday and Friday. No fishing, right? Wrong!

I am going to run open boat Stripers for the next two days. In a NW, no matter how hard it blows, the ocean will be flat calm in close. We are catching stripers on live grass shrimp at the Barnegat inlet jetty. Most of the fish are under the legal 28" but we are catching a lot of 22" to 27" fish on 10 pound spinning rods. We have even taken a few legal ones, though most of the bigger fish run us right over the rocks and break off the light running line. I do carry heavier tackle when we grow weary of break-offs and want to try boating the bigger ones, but then you don't enjoy the most common size of fish that are there. We are also catching porgies and blackfish in the mix. When we are done on the jetty, I am packing extra bait onboard to hit some of the back bay spots for weakfish, kingfish and blowfish. You don't have to wait the "blow" out... Go Fishing!

The marine forecast has prohibited my boat from running offshore but word has it that the Barnegat Ridge has been heavy with false albacore. As soon as this wind subsides, which looks like the weekend, I will be running charter or open boat to those grounds as well as the Mud Hole in search of bluefin tuna, mahi, skipjack, and bonita. We will be ready to troll, jig, chum/chunk, and live bait. We chum fresh spearing whenever we can acquire the bait. We chunk with sardines if we are on the bluefin, though they love a spearing slick, as well.

    Hi Flier Open Boat Trips:

    Thurs..Sept 9 6AM to 2PM Live Grass Shrimp Stripers/Back Bay Asst.
    Fri......Sept 10 6AM to 2PM Live Grass Shrimp Stripers/Back Bay Asst.
Sat.....Sept 11 ----------------- Hi Flier booked for this day -----------------
Sun....Sept 12 6AM to 3PM Bonita, Albacore, Tuna, Mahi, Skipjack
Mon....Sept 13 6AM to 3PM Bonita, Albacore, Tuna, Mahi, Skipjack
Tues...Sept 14 6AM to 3PM Bonita, Albacore, Tuna, Mahi, Skipjack

The cost is the same for all trips. $200 per person and I only need 1 person to sail. Reservations are required. I limit the open boat to 3 people. If you are chartering the boat, we can discuss it.

Sea Devil Charters Fishing Report, Pleasant Beach, NJ, 9-09-10

Tuesday, September 7: Awesome catch of big blues & false albacores!

Monday, September 6: Happy Labor Day! Captain Bob steamed us out of the inlet and set sail due east. Under perfect conditions, we headed out to the Shark River Reef, 16 miles out, where we have been landing some super Sea Devil Blues! We reached our spot, anchored up and went to work. Brian Vogt, with son, Bryce & Doug Mills, with son Kyle, had a blast reeling in those big blues and learning much about fishing! Antoinette DePiano made her first trip aboard the Sea Devil! (Her first fishing experience.....)She hung in there and had a great time....She couldn't seem to hook her own early on, but reeled a few in that Mark or Nick hooked...Finally in the last few minutes she hooked one by herself, but it broke water and shook the hook loose; then on her last cast, she hooked another one, and got it in herself...It was the largest DePiano caught blue of the day. Nick DePiano messed around with the false albacore for a long time; getting lessons from Mike and Mike.....He landed a couple before going back to the blues. Kudos to dad, Mark DePiano for having more blues hit the deck than Nick had! Sal “the Bear” Pignataro, slammed the big blues today, perhaps setting a new personal best record! He and others also landed some false albies! A great way to end the summer season before heading back to school!
