New jersey Charter boat and bait and tackle reports, 9-3

    Saltwater Report: 9/3/2010
    Update 3:45PM
Just had a report from around Seaside/IBSP and it is very fishable. Waves are around 4 to 5 foot and the water is not that dirty. You still need 6 to 8 ozs to hold bottom. Lot of people are throwing AVA's or some other type of metal. This storm is no worse then a nor'easter but may just kick start the fall season of fishing.

    Update 8:45AM
Just talked to a couple of guys fishing the surf in Seaside. It is still fishable with waves 2 to 4 foot and you need 6 to 8 ozs to hold bottom. They said it is good striper water but they didn't catch any. They were throwing AVA's.

Well I guess the coming storm kept everyone home as the only thing I heard was a couple of stripers from Seaside and a few fluke out of Barnegat Inlet. Today looks like a wash because of Earl. We will have to wait and see what happens for the weekend. I don't think any will try to fish wreak or reefs for fluke but then again we will have to see. And sorry about no report yesterday, I re-did some of the website and forgot to update before I uploaded the pages.

    Bay / Jetty Report: 9/3/2010
Didn't hear anything from the bays yesterday. I did hear of a lot of people pulling their boats because of Earl. Only 4 days left in fluke season. Today is a wash because of Earl. Saturday I doubt if anybody will try to fish outside. It could be best if you fish around the inlet and bays. You may not get any keeper fluke but there are other fish to catch now. Take some chum and fish for kingfish, blowfish, blackfish, sea bass or snappers. Hey I know it's not fluke but at least you can fish and have some fun.

    Fresh Water Report: 9/3/2010
Few fishing once again because of the heat I guess. Only reports I had were bass, sunnies, and catfish from Town Center and a few bass and pickeral from Miry Run. Today I bet there will be no one fishing because of Earl. If we get some rain it could help fill in the lakes and ponds and help the fishing.

Grumpy's Bait and Tackle Fishing report, Seaside Park , 9-04-10

    Thursday, September, 2, 2010 at 5:10AM
    What are you waiting for?
Earl is expected to make a brief appearance tomorrow but it seems everybody has been taking shelter all week? Gorgeous day again - Sunny...hot with highs in the lower 90s. South winds 10 to 15 mph. Take advantage of today because Friday it will get a little snotty.
The monster blues have shown up and they came with an attitude! From the anglers I talked with, they were some tackle bustin alligators. We had 9-14 pounders weighed in. Oh, and Thank You Nancy for the little gifty you left after you weighed your fish in! I didnt hear much from the Flukers yesterday but then again, very few of the dinner guests get weighed in so not hearing complaints either is a good thing.
If you are interested in learning how to make fingertrap splices for long leaders using PowerPro Hollow Ace, ask me next time you are in the store and I will give you a Demo.
It was wonderful to see that package come in from Seeker. It means Mike will leave me alone for a few days. Kinda like a kid at Xmas that will even play with the wrapping paper.

Fall is right on our heels and if you are planing to have that custom rod made now is the time to get it ordered. Sooner ordered sooner fished.
Grumps been talking so much about the hollow ace that he′s generated so much hot air it has shown up on radar so the weather service gave it a name EARL. He says I talk a lot.....

Grumpy's Bait and Tackle Fishing report, Seaside Park , 9-04-10

    A Beautiful Morning!
    Friday, September, 3, 2010 at 4:53AM
But it wont last all that long with the long awaited arrival of the overly hyped and sensationalized Earl - Tropical storm conditions expected. Showers likely. Highs in the mid 80s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph...increasing to north 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph this afternoon. Chance of rain 70 percent. My guess is that we will start seeing the weather go away by mid-late morning and it will be outta here before sunup tomorrow.
Nothing new and exciting to report due to the overkill reporting of impending doom and gloom by all the media. Very little traffic on the island yesterday and you know what is coming next - groan - there will be no fish caught without fishermen trying.
Today, I will try to convince Mike to change his mind - anything would be an improvement over the one he has now!

2nd Report of the day, since Mo did a quick one this morning regarding weather conditions.

Posted by MizMo: WHAT IS AN RSA PERMIT?
A recreational angler called today wanting to know what the RSA permit for an extended fluke season was and how to get it, so I figured I would post a little info on it here to clarify, after doing some researching on the internet. RSA stands for Research Set Aside. This is not a permit that is available to the general public, it is for charter/party boats ONLY. They actually have to bid (sometime around May I think) and win for the right to get an extended fishing season for the most popular species, including fluke, in competition with the commercial netters, then apply for the permit. Some boats have given up trying for the permit, feeling that the states & NMFS are just making each trip harder, as there is a lot of research data for every trip required regarding fish/catch/release/anglers that must be ready before they even land at the dock. Also, not all of the charter/party boats win, as there are a limited number of RSA Permits available to use up what little recreational quota was allowed them. Hope this helps, since there seems to be a rumor circulating that this permit was out there for every fisherman, and that is incorrect. It does, however, allow you to get some extra fluke fishing trips in for the year on the charter/party boats that have the permit, that you wouldn't otherwise have. The research data gathered helps towards determining future regulations, which isn't a bad thing, either. More info here on RSA Programs (.pdf file). ~MizMo

Yes! The http://www.njfishandwildlife.com website has not posted the update on their front page as of this afternoon, but they have uploaded a revised copy of the regulation sheet. The Black Sea Bass season for NJ has been extended. New dates are May 22 - Oct. 11, then a brief closure, to reopen Nov. 1 - Dec. 31. This is good news since fluke season closes Sept. 6th and the sea bass season was originally set to close right behind it on Sept. 12th.

Reminder that the last day for keeping fluke caught in NJ is Monday 8/6/10.

It is currently dead calm this morning on Great Bay, so bay/river fishing conditions are still good for a bit if you want to sneak out for a little while to fish. Light rain is possible. Winds due to pick up this afternoon when the edge of the storm arrives. The good news is that the storm has started to collapse and has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression, which is currently off of the Carolinas.

In the Fish News section (under Popular Topics) there is a park closure update due to the hurricane for those of you that fish from land. ~MizMo

Tomorrow looks like a blow out. Saturday, I doubt if anyone will be able to get out or would actually want to get out on the ocean to fish the reef sites for fluke.
Focus efforts around/near BUT NOT ACTUALLTY in the Little Egg Inlet and look for the Big Blues that were there on Wednesday. Fish the slack tide for Tautog along the banks opposite the old fish factory. Chum up the little fish for entertainment. Anglers dropped down to fishing just one rod as the snapper blues were grabbing the baits in the chum slicks before they could get to the bottom to feed the little seabass. The better small fish action was busier over by the fish factory this week.

Plenty of bad news on the fluke fishing scene. Anglers have covered all the bottom from here to Garden State North and could not come up with any fluke activity. Where did they go?
With a little looking, there are croakers to catch. They aren't hitting the record books for big fish, but it's still a tug on the line and a possible dinner on the table.
News of the day...Gigantic BLUEFISH. Grandfather and Grandson Joseph Filappello found blues around the Rutgers Buoys this afternoon. The two big fish they weighed in were 14.6 and 13.3 both 35" in length. Chartreuse stretch 25+ trolling lures where the hot ticket. Good job to Capt. Jerry Sullivan for putting them on the fish. I am curious to see if we will still have bluefish activity here after Hurricane Earl moves through or if they are just on the move inshore due to the storm.

Jingles Bait and Tackle fishing report, Beach Haven 9-04-10

    Thurs Sept 2nd

Once again yesterday there were bluefish on the beach. Early morning anglers were buying mullet to gove it a try before the wind blew-up. At 2 pm the wind is SW about 20.

Yesterday at high tide the inlet had some keeper fluke on the change of the tide. People that fluke in the reefs also caught big bluefish as there were bunker present. Sea Bass fishing has finally started to pick up again with some nice keepers. Offshore reports were only of dolphin. We can only hope the tuna fishing picks up with the blow offshore. Numerous tuna caught in Poormans Canyon but a long ride from here.

Crabbing is moving away from the bridge and into our neighborhood of the Middle Grounds. This morning I was told of some nice catches there. Not real big but keepers.

With the wind this afternoon it has made for a lot of dock-side anglers and crabbers. Small sea bass, snappers, a couple of blowfish, sea robins and spots.

This morning it is 75 with a SW wind about 12 and the ocean is 77.

Absecon Bay Sportsman Center fishing report, Absecon, NJ, 9-04-10

September 3rd, 2010, Trying to reason with Hurricane Season, Or should I say the Hurricane that wasn't. So far at 7 am I am looking at a cloudy sky extra warm temperature and sky high humidity. The wind at the present, or should I say Breeze is just about enough to luft the flags visible along the creek. The Weather Underground web site is giving us a maximum wind of 23 mph at 2 pm. When Earl is due to be offshore of South Jersey, after that it will die off and swing to the west. Tomorrow looks to be beautiful with wave killing west winds, but it might be best to stay in the bay, but Monday and Tuesday should be time to be ocean bound.

I hope everyone knows that if you want to hear me expound on the great fishing in Guatemala all you have to do is stop by the shop or call me on the phone, but along with some general early fall fishing observations and general banter I will be on the air with Tom P. , Rack and Fin Radio, tomorrow morning at 9 am. Turn on your FM radio to 97.3 or catch us on line at Rack 'n Fin Radio New jersey Charter boat and bait and tackle reports, 9-3-1.gif. If this next link works you can hear the Guatemala Segment Here.

Absecon Bay Sportsman Center fishing report, Absecon, NJ, 9-04-10

September 1st, 2010, A new month and a new page of this years fishing. Especially you flounder fishermen, but then again everyone is a flounder fisherman when they are biting and we are looking for a great dinner. So it is all over but the shouting. We still have Labor Day weekend, but there is one small hurricane scheduled to arrive between now and then which may stir things up a bit. Right now it doesn't look serious except for a breezy day Friday and probably some heavy surf and big swells to make a mess of the near shore ocean waters. It does look like Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be great fishing days to try and put those last filets in the freezer.

As a break to all those last minute fluke fishermen that, I am running a super special on all flounder rigs in the store. I will take 50% off the price of any rig in the store that has flounder printed somewhere on the package. Even if you don't get to use them all this year you can be ready for the 2011 season which may be better since the Fish Gods have increased the quota. On the other hand we still have to wait until the High and Mighty Mystic Soothsayers who pull the numbers of flounder caught in 2010 out of their collective asses to see if they can claim that we over fished again this year.

From my personal experience, the weigh ins here at the store and general reports I get a feel that the number of keepers was way down this year, but the numbers of fat 16" to 17 7/8" was up substantially. Something that I believe is due to the fact that the male flounders just don't grow over 18" and we are building a society of mature male flounder that will probably die of old age unless they get to fill up the commercial nets that are allowed to keep 14" fish.

Just because the flounder season closes up next Monday, don't hang up the rods, It is a great pan fish season and I am running a Pan Fish Pandemonium tournament and giving prizes for the biggest White Perch, Kingfish and Croaker caught from September 7th to September 30th. The prizes are $50 and $25 gift certificates for each species and though I realize this isn't a giant prize you do have to consider that these aren't giant fish. I hope to have some pictures of these mini-lunkers here on the site which should be interesting. Here are all the details

If you haven't heard the SPOT have made a good showing across just about all of the area and even though they are small for a dinner plate they are the perfect striper size meal. Ean the resident Dock Rat has been catching between 50 and 100 right off the dock here every day and from reports there are much better areas. I plan on heading out to the beach right after the weekend and will be throwing out my shoulder again with the cast net. I plan on having plenty in stock so if you don't catch your own or run out before the Striper Season ends you'll find them here.

Remember we keep everything for collecting spot and keeping them alive here at the store from Bloodworms, FishBites, tiny hooks, sabiki rigs, Cast nets, Areators and Keep Alive Oxygen infusers, Livewells and even complete Oxygen Systems. The biggest sellers are the Blue Claw Live Bait Cages which are made from Riverdale Wire and are 100% otter proof and will hold up to some abuse at your dock and keep your valuable bait safe.

A last note I finally got the good news from Capt. Dennis Wheeler, My partner with the "Tijereta" our charter boat in Guatemala that everything is finally running at 100% and we are ready to fish. Check over to the other half of my web site at www.FishGuatemala.com for complete information and give me a call whenever you are ready to talk about a great fishing experience.
