New jersey Charter boat and bait and tackle reports, 9-19

    September 17, 2010

Registration ($30) of the 56th Annual LBI Surf Fishing Classic has begun. The registration forms and hats are here. This year the hats are grey! Don't wait too long to sign-up. The hats go quick! First come first serve. Also look into being a part of the $10 Striper Calcutta too. Last fall Brian McAllister took the $1980 pot with a 39lb 15oz fish. It is our goal to meet and/or beat the pot this year. Ask about the Striper Calcutta when registering at the shop.

I spoke with a surf caster who was tossing "Smoky Joe" Red-Fins as I was walking down the beach leaving the surf this morning. He had two stripers in the mid 20's (inches) at first light. I have also received numerous reports (from customers in the shop) of kingfish, blues ranging in size from snappers-cocktails+ and spike weakfish. Once the water clarity comes back to what it was before the recent storm I expect the albies to show back up along the beaches. Lets hope the bait stays in tight! ~ Greg @ FHQ

Received: Sept 17, 2010 3:55 PM Subject: Lindy Fishing Report

The No Limits Fishing Team Dynamic duo of Bob Percopo and Jeff Barnhart headed to the Lindy last week on Bob’s 33 Hydra sport. What a terrific trip. The water was flat calm all the way out, during the troll and most of the way home, only kicking up 20 miles from the inlet on the way back. The water was the clearest blue I have ever seen. We shot a video of porpoises swimming under the boat that looks like it was shot in an aquarium. We also experienced pilot whales swimming by to take a look at us. Not a bad day fishing either. We went three for three on mahi – two for two on white marlin (73 and 75 inches both boated and safely released) and lost a good size tuna at the boat. ~ Jeff Barnhart

Received: Sept 17, 2010 4:58 PM Subject: Harvey Cedars Report - Sept 11-17th

Fished the new terra-formed beach front off Harvey Cedars. It's now a very different place from what I remember from years past; however, it shows promise.

Picked up a nice brace of Kingfish on bloodworms. Had to walk the beach to find the right area, back wash and rips seem to produce better then the now, deep, consistent drop-offs. Monday 9/13 produced tailor blues and lots of shots at Albies off of my kayak. Hooked three, 2 lb Blues but no Albies. Tuesday was all Kingfish on bloods, same as previous, look for slots and rough water. Wednesday showed a nice blitz of Blues at afternoon high-tide, hooked three. They were chasing bait. Thursday was a bust, as was today (Friday). Tight Lines, Jeff Weiss

Ocean Explorer Fishing Report, Belmar, NJ, 9-18-10

9-17-10 We did have a good swell this morning left over from those nasty storms yesterday. It did hamper our efforts a little bit for the sea bass but as the day went on and the ocean let up a bit we managed to put a catch together.Guys had between 4-17 keeper sea bass a piece and a few had a keeper Tog to go with it,but you did have to work at it to get any high numbers. The swell dropped out alot by the end of the day,so tomorrow is looking good.See ya in the morning. Here are some pics from today and this week.Bobby Kojac took the pool money home with a five pound blackfish today.

    Fisherman Fred's Fishing Report, Hamilton,NJ, 9-19-10

    Saltwater / Jetty Report: 9/19/2010
    Update 8:25AM
When I got to the store this morning I already had reports waiting for me. Bluefish being caught in the pocket on IBSP this morning. Few stripers were caught from IBSP and Seaside this morning. Swells are 2 to 3 feet but the water is very clean. I would say you would need 6 to 8 ozs to hold or throw thin metals or something that looks like a sandeel.

Swells were 3 to 4 foot but good striper water. Oh and striper water it was. A bunch of 10 to 20 lb stripers were caught from the IBSP / Seaside area yesterday and last night. Also heard of a few being caught from LBI, Ortley Beach, Mantoloking and Point Pleasant Beach. Also heard of a bunch of shorts being caught. Looks like it is time to get out there. Needlefish, AVA's, Deadly Dicks and and type of sandeel lure was working. The mullet run looks to have started as there is now a ton of them in the surf with all the other bait. The pocket on IBSP had a ton of bluefish caught from it yesterday as well. Can I tell you one thing? GET OUT AND FISH!!! No need to now wait for that phone call or text. If you want to catch fish now is the time.

    9/18/2010
    Update 8:25AM
Just had an update that bluefish were caught in the pocket on IBSP this morning on bait. Looks like a day I wish I was fishing.

Reports of kingfish and smaller bluefish off the LBI surf. Bigger bluefish, false albacore, and some stripers are being caught off of IBSP / Seaside area. Some of the stripers are in the 15 lb class. More and more are being caught. Water is a little warm but could this be the start of the fall run? With all the bait in the water and now the mullet run starting who knows. We will have to wait and see. As of right now the swell isn't too bad but it is suppose to get worse. Boaters might have a tough time this weekend but if you can get out there is false albacore, sea bass, and croakers to be had. Croakers are in 30 to 50 foot of water. The false albacore you can try trolling feathers or clark spoons.

    Bay Report: 9/19/2010
Bob reported he had 12 blowfish in the 10 to 13 inch range, 4 snapper blues, 8 spot and many small seabass all from around the BI buoy in Barnegat Bay. Barnegat Bay, Great Bay and Tuckerton Bay most were fishing blowfish, snappers, and spots and having good luck with them. As everyone tells me, use clam chum and more chum and more chum and more chum. Oh did I say chum very very heavy? and use clam or squid for bait. Crabbing is still doing ok but has slowed.

    9/18/2010
Not much from Barnegat Bay, Great Bay and Tuckerton Bay yesterday. I might hear more today as a lot of people will stay inside. Did hear of blowfish being caught and some spot as well.

    Fresh Water Report: 9/19/2010
The rain helped fill in some water and it helped the fishing. I had a ton of reports from all over the place. Bass, pickeral, sunnies, catfish, yellow perch, and even a few crap were caught. Places are still weed heavy so weedless hooks are a good thing to carry. A lot are fishing shiner and worms right now.

    9/18/2010
The storm we had the other night and the cooler weather has helped the fishing some by the reports I received. Not many reports but some bass, sunnies and catfish from Town Center. Some bass and crappie from Gropps Lake. Lake Assunpink, Miry Run, Etra Lake and Prospertown Lake had some bass and pickeral caught.

Grumpy's Bait and Tackle Fishing report, Seaside Park , 9-19-10

    All Bass on the scale!
    Sunday, September, 19, 2010 at 4:14AM
Welcome to the fall preview. The weigh-in list for yesterday was all Bass at 30″ plus. They were coming in all day long without regard to tide or time of day. Assorted metals and plugs did a lot of the work but Bait did get some fish also. It was nice to talk with some conservation minded anglers that released some nice Bass. Blues are still around and most of what I heard was 5 lbs and under on both bait and metal. We should be seeing a buildup of long period ground swells courtesy of Hurricane Igor today through Monday and then subsiding. The surf zone forecast is 4-7 feet and we all know how much the Bass love bumpy water.
Here is the link to a local video of a bluefish blitz from a few days ago:

This is the most recent guess from the weather asylum - Sunny this morning...then becoming partly sunny. Highs in the mid 70s. Northwest winds around 5 mph...becoming southeast this afternoon. Lets hope they got this one right!

Mike is off today (more than usual) and my ears can use the rest. He was talking on two phones at the same time yesterday and he has the gall to say I talk a lot?

For you folks that are waiting for the fall run to start get with it. If you remember the spring and summer runs started early, guess the fall run is following suit. If you hurry you could load the freezer with bass before the leaves fall off the trees.
Grump says I talk a lot but yesterday he had a young kid in the store for so long he went from kindergarten to his voice changing before he could get out......

Jingles Bait and Tackle fishing report, Beach Haven 9-19-10

    Sun Sept 19th

Lower 60sd this am and water temp is starting to drop. Water 71 this am with very little wind

Despite the swell kingfish were caught fairly well yesterday at the lower tides. Small bluefish are around also. Dockside was more snappers and blowfish.

Igor's winds have slowed to 85 so maybe our swells will not be as bad as predicted.

Scotts Bait and Tackle Fishing report, Mystic Island, 9-19-10

    Saturday, September 18, 2010 /\/\/\ 6:02pm
A few anglers did cross the nasty inlet this morning and found the ocean to be not so bad, but the ocean was stirred enough that a whole lot of catching was going on.
Catching in the Great Bay was on with plenty of activity of spots and blowfish which were the target fish anglers were after. Keep the clam chum flowing and the fish will come.

Fisherman's Headquarters Fishing Report, Ship Bottom, NJ, 9-19-10

    Current Report

    September 18, 2010

Lotta spot around so catch up the striper candy while you can. We have had a number of reports from the North and South ends as well as mid-island. Go get 'em with worms (or Fish Bites) and some clam chum.

Blackfish are up at the Barnegat Inlet Rocks. Numerous anglers headed up this morning with live green crabs. Many have come back with talks of small fish but one angler did catch a big boy tog.

Dennis Merced weighed in a 24-1/4" 8-lb 10-oz blackfish. Dennis also mentioned that he released two short tog and said that last weekend he broke off a couple keeper sized fish.

Paul Galasso, aboard his boat the Scorpio, went out and trolled up some good sized bluefish this morning out in 60' of water off of Northern LBI. Today's biggest Bluefish for Paul's was a 16-lbs 10-oz. He reported that all of the blues he caught were well over 10-lbs. Paul mentioned that he got them all on deep diving plugs.

Sea Devil Charters Fishing Report, Pleasant Beach, NJ, 9-19-10

Saturday, September 18: Captain Bob sailed out to the Hudson Canyon and anchored up late Friday night. The first big tuna was hooked just after midnight, on Saturday morning, but broke off before hitting the deck. Bobby Murak, Warren, NJ landed the first yellow fin tuna shortly thereafter; followed by yellow fins landed by Jeff Lang, South Plainfield and Chris Seery, Florham Park. Chris Seery then caught a big swordfish. After that, it was pretty quiet until about 5 a.m. when the big tunas came through in numbers and it became quite chaotic. This frenzy went on for almost 3 hours. Many more tunas were caught and several were merely runoffs. The average tuna weighed about 50 pounds and there were just as many long fin tunas caught as there were yellow fins caught with bait and jigs. Some additional highlights include: Young Vinny Vetuschi (13), South Plainfield, caught his first big tuna on his first tuna excursion. Rick DeVito, South Plainfield, caught his first 2 tunas ever, on this first tuna trip that he’s ever made. Chris Zotti, Summit, was happy to deck a first tuna of the 2010 season. Tony Monzione, North Plainfield, landed a long fin tuna that weighed better than 63 pounds. (A near record size long fin for NJ). AJ Monzione battled for more than an hour and a half with a big tuna, until the fish won that war. Several others caught or lost big tunas and comments I heard from anglers leaving the boat were: “An excellent trip!” “I am ready to book my next trip for this season.” “What a great time!” “An awesome trip!” We have plenty of open spots for this season. Check out the tuna calendar for availability at: http://www.partyboatnj.com/tuna-calendar.php and call Cindy @ 732 701-1094 to make your reservation!

Ocean Explorer Fishing Report, Belmar, NJ, 9-19-10

9-18-10 We managed to have a nice day out even though those weather men say something different.Ocean stayed nice all day with just a bit a swell out of the east.Fishing was good again for a decent size crowd, just some did better than others. If you were in the right spot at the right time you had 8-12 keepers, and if you were not on your game today you had maybe the low hooks only had a couple.A mix of both some Jumbo sea bass and plenty of shorty sizes. But overall it was a good day.Tomorrow is going to be nice with light winds,so dont let the weather man scare you away with the swell forecast, that will just affect the beaches.Come out and catch some dinner.
