Angler Party Fishing Report, Atlantic Highlands, NJ, 9-19-10
September 18, 2010 - We fished off shore of Sea Bright today where the water was nice and clean. There was good short action with 12 keeper Fluke and a fair amount of Sea Bass. Jose Reyes from Garfield, NJ and Miguel Nunez from North Brunswick, NJ tied for the pool.
The swells from Hurricane Igor will hurt the Fluke fishing for the next few days. We are chartered for bottom fishing on Sunday and will not sail Monday with the poor weather forecast. Tuesday is also doubtful and it will not be until at least Wednesday that the Fluke start to bite again. We had good fluking after the last storm passed well offshore.
If the weather looks good for next Saturday, September 25, we plan to run a special 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM Fluke and Sea Bass trip. We'll let you know on Monday.

Reel Class/Point Pleasant Saturday 9/18 Bluefish & Albies!!!
Written by Capt.Allen
Saturday, 18 September 2010 20:30
We had Derial Sanders charter the boat today - along with Derial were his brother John and Derial's grandson Trevor. Steve "Socks" filled in a spot for the trip as well.
Ran off to the east first thing in a sloppy 4' chop coupled with the swell, but got up on the hook and started getting some chum in the water - conditions sort of sucked as the chum was running right up to the bow, but we made due. In the first 5 minutes, Steve hooked something that nearly spooled him twice, took him around the boat, and seemed a bit bigger than an albie or skippie - we had it around 20' away and saw color but the fish came unbuttoned. My only guess was that it was a football bluefin. It took a few minutes after that to get a bite going, but we had some real gator bluefish right in the slick and we started to pick away at them on both jigs and bait for a little while.
After that slowed down, we made a move around 11AM to look for some albies, and with a little wiggle, we got set up on some good reads and again got the hook in and started throwing over some spearing. It only took about 10 minutes - we first had a few bluefish, but the albies took over! Great action as we broke out the light spinning rods, the fish were right in the slick, dashing through as well as up on top. We mostly had 1-2 on for the rest of the day, and we had a real nice flurry right at the end where we were virtually hand feeding them right behind the boat! All albies took spearing or tsunami soft plastics.
Great trip -- we boated easily 20 albies, if not a few more, and lost easily that many. We also boated a bunch of bluefish (didn't count!) and busted off quite a few of the big demons as well (10-14#ers). Derial and the guys were great, and they again took part on another memorable trip!! Thanks for coming down guys!!

Fluke Fishing????

The extended fluke season for those boats carrying the special research set aside permit is a little more than a week old, but the participating captains say so far so good.
"It's a little more work than we usually do, but so far it's going okay," Capt. Hal Hagaman off the Sea Tiger II out of Atlantic Highlands said. Capt. Hagaman was referring to the extra paperwork and the weighing of the fish at sea that the permit requires.
Capt. Hagaman reported the fishing is good, there's still a lot of shorts, but there are some nice keepers mixed in.
"There's a lot of people who like to fish for fluke and so far it's been worth it," he said. Most of the keepers the Sea Tiger II are catching range around 5 and 6 pounds.
Capt. John Connell of the Captain John out of Keyport said the permit means "the difference between sitting at the dock or out here fishing on a beautiful day."
Capt. Connell said things are working out very well.
"I'm happy and the customers are happy. It's a learning process and it took a couple of days to sort things out, but I can't complain," he said. He plans on fishing until he reaches his limit.
The way the program works is the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAFMC) can set aside up to 3 percent of the total allowable landings (TAL) for research purposes. The program, developed by NOAA, lets commercial and recreational captains to bid on the set aside quota and then continue to fish until their pound limit is reached.
Capt. George Bachert of the Angler out of Atlantic Highlands said the program is working out well for him.
"We're not carrying the number of people we would like, but it's going good," he said.
Capt. Bachert said the keeper ratio has really improved and they're catching plenty of fluke. Many of the fish are in the 6 to 7 pound range.
"We're reading a lot more bait than we did during the regular season. The fishing seemed to improved once that storm moved through and the water temperature dropped. It's reading about 66 degrees now,"he said. Capt. Bachert plans to sail for fluke until his limit is reached, which he expects to happen in about two weeks.
Didi Bradshaw, wife of Capt. Kevin Bradshaw of the Dorothy B, another boat out of Atlantic Highlands, said they're doing well with the program with a good number of keepers being caught. She wasn't sure if they'll reach their limit, but said the Dorothy B will sail through the end of September as long as the fishing holds up.
"For years, the research set aside quota was available to the commercial sector, why shouldn't the recreational sector be able to take advantage of it as well," Jim Hutchinson, managing director of the Recreational Fishing Alliance said.
"It's good that the party boats can access it and recreational anglers can take advantage of it.
Hutchinson, however, does not agree with how NOAA administers it.
"They use it like a bake sale to raise money," Hutchinson said.
The research set aside quota is supposed to go to better data collection on summer flounder, Hutchinson continued, but the money raised through the sale of the quota can go anywhere.
Hutchinson cited the work being done by the Save the Summer Flounder Fishery Fund (SSFFF) and The Partnership for Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Science (PMAFS) as critical in the fight to save the fishery

Back to Blues?
Monday, September, 20, 2010 at 3:46AM
After such a good day on Saturday, yesterday was was disappointing for Bass but there were plenty of smaller blues around. Normally, the Bass love the bumpy water but hey, they have to eat sometime so maybe today is the day to soak a clam? We have another day of good surf from Hurricane Igor in the forecast but still nothing crazy like we get from a Noreaster. The long period swells will begin diminishing today.
Here is the weather idiots guess of the day - Sunny and breezy. Highs in the mid 70s. North winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
Fall is only a couple of days away. That means it must be time for Mike to change the air in his head!

Scotts Bait and Tackle Fishing report, Mystic Island, 9-20-10
Sunday, September 19, 2010 /\/\/\ 1:10pm
I apologize for being so glum on the fishing report. With the sea conditions, we have been limited in what is available to catch. If your not into little fish, like the blowfish and you already have about a five year supply of spots in your bait pens, there aren't a whole lot of options.
A few of the aggressive anglers are getting anchored up just right for the tog along the banks and are having a ball, but if your not EXACTLY on the ledges, then the catching is just not going to happen. It's a short window of opportunity with the tides too as the fish are most actively feeding during the slow moving currents of the last of the incoming or last of the outgoing tides.
White Perch anglers are putting together some decent catches of fish in the creeks near the mouth of the Mullica River. Look for holes in Ballengers and Nacote Creek, usually along the bends of the creek. Fish the bloodworms for the best chance at catching the perch. FishBite bloodworms work well when the White Perch feeding mode is on. If they are picky, then the real bloodworms will save the day. Hardest part of catching perch, besides finding them, is keeping the baits away from the little seabass.

Carolyn Ann III Fishing Report, Barnegat Light, NJ, 9-20-10
Fishing Report
It's Sunday evening, 9/19/10. Hear R dis weaks pool winnerz...
Ron Weiss, Clifton, NJ a 3.2 lb. triggerfish. Mike DeFebo, Berwick, PA a 2.5-lber. Bob Gilbert, Doylestown, PA a 4-lb. sea bass. Amelie Snyder, Congers, NY a 4.6-lb. sea bass. John Tien, Marlton, NJ a 3.3-lb. blackfish. On Saturday afternoon we went on charter with Mr. Vincent Salla and group from the General Air Co. based in Darby, PA. Everyone went home with fish!! Boy are these people fun!! Thanx Vince and we hope to see ALL of you back real soon!!
Sea bassing is as good as it gets RIGHT NOW!! Many people approaching limit quantities. There are still, however, lots of shorts...Oh by the way we want to thank the National Weather Service once again for putting the screws to us. They predicted high seas and huge swells. None of this happened. In fact today (Sunday) there was not enough wind or current to keep the boat on anchor. Captain Will had to run the engines all day and hover the boat over the wrecks back and forth to keep us on target.
NOW is the TIME to MUG up the sea bass and finally fill our freezers. We have clam, squid and mackrel for bait and it is ALL working!! Come on down before the FEDS shut down our season (Oct. 12th). Taps.

Fisherman's Headquarters Fishing Report, Ship Bottom, NJ, 9-20-10
September 19, 2010
Received: Saturday, September 18, 2010 6:32:47 PM Subject: Reel Fantasea Fishing Charters
This week we had to fish the weather windows due to approaching fronts and tropical systems but when we did, we found action with blues, false albies, schoolie stripers, blow fish, and other bottom species. The abundant inshore false albacore action has been one of the best I have seen in years. What these fish lack in table fare they more than make up for it in blistering drag scorching runs and some of the best and exciting sight casting found anywhere. These little dragsters have enormous amounts of power, endurance and speed making for some of the best inshore species to target this time of year and with loads of bluefish, and even quit a few schoolie stripers making the mix, the action has been exciting. If you never caught a False Albie these normally offshore species are now literally within a stones throw from the beach !
Our Fall season is under way and the action is red hot don't miss out on some of the best action found anywhere. Remember for those who love to fish but friends/family don't, we offer Open Boat trips that get you in on the action with other enthusiastic anglers who share in your same passion. Come join the fun. Both expert and novice welcome.
Our first "Friday Night at the Fights" Open Boat trip had regulars Jay Simmons and Karl Staffan Sr and Jr mixing it up between albies and loads of blues . The blues were chasing and gorging on vast amounts and variety of bait fish which included spearing peanut bunker, mullet, blowfish, spot, and even tropical lookdowns.
