Fisherman Fred's Fishing Report, Hamilton, NJ, 7-17-10

    New Jersey Fishing Reports

    7/16/2010
Sure is a lack of people fishing lately. Only reports is fluke and sharks at night. The fluke are being caught from the LBI and IBSP surf. Rick reports he was fluke fishing inshore in 40 to 60 feet of water. He says that you don't catch as many as in the bays but the fish are bigger. Seems the keeper ratio is about 20 to 1.

    7/15/2010
The scattered thunderstorms kept everyone off the beaches yesterday. Did have one report that some brown sharks were caught last night off IBSP. Bunker is the bait of choice.

    Bay / Jetty Report:

    7/16/2010
Barnegat Bay, Barnegat Inlet, Manasquan Inlet, the Manasquan River, Little Egg Inlet, Great Bay and Tuckerton Bay are all producing fluke. The only problem is you have to work for them. The water temps in parts of the bays is now around 80, so the fluke are being lazy. Keeper ratios are around 40 to 1 right now. Crabbing is GREAT now. A lot of smaller ones but a few dozen to a 1/2 a bushel is now the norm.

    7/15/2010
No one fished yesterday because of the scattered thunderstorms. That was a smart idea as the water is no place to be during a thunderstorm.

    Fresh Water Report:

    7/16/2010
Few were fishing yesterday. Some bass, sunnies, and catfish were caught from Town Center. A few bass and pickeral were caught from Miry Run. Bill reports that he caught some bass out of Prospertown Lake when using a frog pulled over the pads. He also reported that small pickeral were ripping his soft swimbait up. All the reports stated that the water is a bit high and coffee colored. In this weather it won't take long to be back to normal.

    7/15/2010
A few tried fishing between the rain showers (some down pours) yesterday. Had a few reports of bass being caught. Water levels are now running high and discolored. That should clear up once we get a couple of days of no rain.

Grumpy's Bait and Tackle Fishing Report, Seaside Park, 7-17-10

    Must be the Doldrums!
    Friday, July, 16, 2010 at 4:50AM
Just generally a lack of fishermen producing the expected lack of fishing report again! The shark hunters are having a ball at night with the seasonal return of the (usually brown) sharks. It must have been a very slow news day yesterday with all the news coverage of two sharks spotted in Seaside like it is an unusual event. Fluke are all over the usual places from what we are hearing, we just dont seem to get any on the scale. The throwback ratio is still high as expected in the early season. The bay is loaded with crabs and the snappers have invaded.
You can still get in the GarbageFish Tournament! It runs through the end of July and there is cash and a lot of prizes to be won! Sign up in the store or at www.garbagefish.com
The evil weatherman has decided on this for the day - Sunny. Highs in the mid 80s. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph.
I gave Mike a piece of my mind yesterday but his body rejected it as an unknown foreign substance.

Of course my body would reject a piece of his mind. My body will only accept things that are alive and working and not older than dirt......

The weatherman did his job of convincing everybody to stay home yesterday but we sould not have that problem today - Partly sunny. Patchy fog this morning. Highs in the lower 80s. North winds 5 to 10 mph. Sound like a good day to be on the beach?
The only report from the beaches came from some guys getting more bunker to go sharking again. They had to put up with some weed in the water but the sharks coudnt have cared less and wanted to eat anyway. Big hooks, wire and bunker will get you that adrenalin surge.
Now we have Mike chiming in on the weather too! The only aspect of weather he knows anything about is fog and that is inside his head!

I know when you′re outside and you′re getting wet it′s raining, when you look up and it hurts your eyes it,s sunny. The rest of the time it,s partly something at least I don′t try to predict it unlike the prince of darkness Grump does.....

Jingles Bait and Tackle Fishing Report, Beach Haven 7-17-10

    Fri July 16th

Ocean is back to 75 this am with a lite SW wind. Air temp is 75 on its way to the 90s. Looks like 90s most of the weekend. The last couple of evenings have not been to bad when we have picked up a ocean breeze.

We did have a report of a 20 pound bass caught from the surf today on clams.

Fishing has stayed about the same all week with continued good catches of fluke in the bay on the top of the tide.

Offshore has been lumpy with not to many pushing off since Monday. The ones that were off still had the the tuna in the Lindy and some dolphin inshore.

There was a small window to get offshore today as long as you left early and got back before the south wind blew up. A few boats took the chance. Finding some temp breaks was the answer to finding the tuna. With the warmer water this year marlin have been hooked up by many anglers.

Weekend looks to continue with the higher seas offshore.

Inshore forecast looks favorable (but it could change). Reminder blackfish opens today with 1 fish @ 14 inches.

Surf has had its share of short fluke, cownose rays, and sharks.

    Thurs July 15th

A fairly brisky northerly wind this morning with air temp of 74 and ocean 67.

Yesterday brought alot of rain west of the parkway and to the north end but we stayed dry. A little rain during the night but I am told the sun is out in Phila this am.

With the strange pattern weather this week it has anglers watching the sky and trying to get their high tide time in. Fishing in the bay continues to have plenty of fish and a few to take home.

Tomorrow blackfish come back into season with the 1 (14 in) fish you are allowed to keep.

Looking ahead to the weekend offshore looks a little lumpy but we all know how quickly that forecast can change.

Scotts Bait and Tackle, Mystic Island,Fishing Report 7-17-10

    Scott's Daily Fishing Report

    Friday, July 16, 2010 /\/\/\ 6:07pm
The afternoon was a blow out. It didn't look like much back in the middle of Mystic Island, but Great Bay had a frothy white cap and there where a lot of the waves coming quick!
Not much has changed this past week. Anglers still finding an occasional keeper between the fish factory islands. Similar catches of fluke are coming from Marshelder Channel and the InterCoastal waterway from 114 in the Tuckerton Bay right out to the Southern Tip of Long Beach Island.
If it is real breezy again tomorrow, make sure to slow the drift down by turning the engine all the way to one direction forcing the boat to push sideways, drag a couple of five gallon pails on ropes or if you are properly geared, get that sea anchor overboard.
Minnows and Gulp three inch swimming minnows (Pink and Chartreuse today) went out of the shop in good numbers to anglers anticipating an early start tomorrow.

One of our local charter captains worked the ocean hard today and hit all the likely structures and lumps and came up with three keeper fluke for a ton of effort and miles covered. Even know the action is slowing down in the back bays, the best bet is still to work the deeper water troughs closer to the inlet. Surface temperatures in the Little Egg Inlet were close to eighty degrees and in some places in the back bay, the water temper hit the eighty degree mark. The fish are likely to be lazy in the hot water making the catching a little more difficult.

Absecon Bay Sportsman Center Fishing Report 7-17-10

    Capt. Dave's Latest Fishing Report
July 15, 2010, I am having trouble understanding how the National Marine Fisheries Council can force these draconian rules on us when the biomass of flounders in the bays is better than I have ever seen it many times over. The only good part of the whole thing is that there are actually more keepers showing up as the summer progresses. However right now you can easily go out and catch fifty nice sized fluke, 15" to 17 7/8" and if you use big baits fished in the right place you may get two or three keepers. I got a three day report from a good local fisherman, Dale Fink, that kept record of the fish he caught over three different days fishing each day with a partner. All three days fishing ended before noon so we aren't talking about marathons by any means

Fisherman's Headquarters Fishing Report, Ship Bottom, NJ, 7-17-10

    Fisherman's Headquarters Fishing Report

    July 16, 2010

Received: Jul 16, 2010 3:53 PM Subject: Rock Deployment on Nine Reefs Continuing in 2010

Four million cubic yards of rock is being deployed on nine New Jersey reefs over the next three years as part of the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife's Artificial Reef Program. The dredge rock ranges in size from basketball-sized pieces to boulders. The rock will be deployed by hopper scows at predetermined locations.

During these reef construction efforts the work will be continuous so boaters must constantly be aware of the reduced maneuverability of the tugs and allow them the right-of-way. Commercial fishers must relocate their gear to other areas not slated for deployment or risk gear damage.

The following nine reefs are receiving dredge rock:

Shark River, Axel Carlson, Garden State North, Atlantic City, Great Egg, Townsend Inlet, Wildwood, Deepwater and Cape May.

For more information on the rock deployments, including maps of the affected reefs, please visit http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/new...efrock7-10.htm on the division's website.

    11:30 AM

Mike from Beach Haven West fished Little Egg Inlet today. He caught 30 short fluke and one keeper. But what a keeper... It was a 7.5-lb fluke!

Received: Jul 15, 2010 6:31 AM Subject: Hi Flier Fluke and Tog

At the time of this report, I'm not liking the NOAA weather forecast for fishing offshore. The Hi Flier will stay in the bay for the next couple of days. Not a bad place to be considering the numbers of fluke we are still jigging in Oyster Creek and Double Creek Channels. These fish are 12 to 22 inches with the majority being throwbacks, but every trip we manage to put a few nice fluke in the cooler. We have been catching these fish on light 10 pound spinning rods. Our go-to bait has been a 3/8 to 1/2 ounce jighead tipped with a white Gulp swimming mullet and second best has been the Gulp new penny shrimp, both in 3 inch size. I stick with the shrimp on my own personal rod, as it seems to produce less, but bigger fish. Now, as a bonus, as of tomorrow, Friday, we can go catch our one blackfish per man, as well. A nice addittion to the Ziplock of fillet at the end of the day. We can catch those fish inside the inlet without going outside. Running an open boat, twice daily Fri thru Sun, 6AM to 11AM, and Noon to 5PM. Call 732.330.5674 for details. We will begin running off for bonita as soon as the weather forecast cleans up, in the meantime, "Let's go catch some Fluke and Tog!"

News from the Sportsfishing Show - ICAST 2010 – Las Vegas

I guess I called it correctly yesterday, the Best of Show goes to Shimano with the Trinidad A Series Reels! The modern times are here with Shimano’s comprehensive fishing systems. Shimano offers everything an angler needs between you and the fish. They have won a number of awards with their new products like the Trinidad A, Stella FE, Wax Wing subsurface swimming lures and the Shimano Terez rods.

    - The Shimano Trinidad A reel series is an eye catcher with it’s silver body and white gripped handle but moreover it’s gonna be a fish killer just like the original Trinidad Series from Shimano. The new Trinidad A Series features all of the best features that the original Trinidad Series offered plus more. The new A Series has a redesigned body and eccentric lever, bearing supported pinion gear and new gearing.

    - The Shimano Terez rods have been in the works for three years and are finally here. The series has a wide variety of solid rods from lightweight inshore rods for back bay and inlet fishing to offshore big game jigging, chunking and popping rods. With Shimano’s TC4 construction these are proven bullet proof blanks with the most advanced components such as the new Fuji K-Series guides, Fuji (custom for Shimano) aluminum/ graphite reel seat and very unique grip configurations.

    - The Shimano Waxwing lure is available in two sizes, a 7/8oz and a 1.5oz. They are a no lip cast and retrieve lure that has a wing. Cast it out and reel it in. It’s gonna be deadly for stripers and tuna.

    - New Shimano Shallow Water Butterfly Jigs were very interesting. They offer three styles. The Shimano Centervortex which is a yo-yo style jig that has a crazy dropping flutter action. The Shimano Slidend sinks straight down but when retrieved it comes alive with action. The Shimano Whirlygig has a twisted tail that produces a spinning action on the retrieve.

    - Van Staal VM 150 reel is an overbuilt quasi-sealed (not water proof) spinning reel at $399.95. It has a stainless main gear and pinion gear as well as a oversized stainless main shaft and a strong stainless bail with internal trip. The VM150 reel holds 285 plus yards of 30 pound braid and its carbon fiber drag washer provides 30 plus pounds of drag. It has a 4.9 to 1 gear ratio retrieve that gives 33” per turn. Please note that there are still some details that will change. They are in the works of redesigning the handle. Currently the reel has a molded stainless handle; however, a machined aluminum handle is in the works. The handle is interchangeable right to left hand retrieve. I am told that eventually there will be a bailless kit too.

    - G.Loomis IMX Surf Rods will be at Fisherman’s Headquarters before you know it (perhaps within a couple weeks). These rods were designed for casting lures so some might think their weight ratings appear to be odd. They do not offer a bait an weight rod yet (hopefully it is coming but we will have to wait and see). The IMX Surf Series features a moderate action blank that has a super fast recovery time. It loads up on the cast and releases with fast power. G.Loomis designed a unique adjustable reel seat which is a solid new feature. The new Fuji K-Series Alconite Guides ice the cake providing longer tangle proof casts.

    - Sebile lures who in my opinion is the king of constant innovation in fishing lures showed their new big game lure construction. They use a stamped stainless steel plate to attach the hooks and tow ring. There is no simple through wire design on these lures. This construction is super strong, “tested at 550-lbs!” Sebile has a number of big game lures that will be at the shop as soon as they are available; a popper, stick bait and a jerk bait.

Tiderunner Bait and Tackle Fishing Report, Lewes, DE, 7-17-10

    July 16

    Nearshore Ocean and Bay

Captain Rick has been targeting FLOUNDER on the full day headboat Keena Dale IV with mixed results. There are some nice fish being caught, including a whopper of almost 11 lbs yesterday, but the numbers seem to vary from day to day. Some days they just seem to slay them and the next day you really have to work for them. Best catches seem to be on Spro or bucktail jigs tipped with a strip of squid of belly meat or a fat minnow, but top and botton rigs also work well. As any good flounder fisherman knows, the secret is to let him chew on it awhile....

The half day headboat is sailing on a daily basis. Captain Mike is a joy to fish with - his never ending search for the Mighty Croaker makes his trips an adventure in themselves, and the man does work hard to put you on the fish.....fishing for small croakers has been steady with everyone catching at least several. For those few who rig up for flounder, they are available too!

Roosevelt Inlet has been the hot spot on FLOUNDER over the past several days, with catches of a dozen or so fish being common. The biggest ones were around the jetties at Roosevelt inlet, but there were a ton of little ones where the stone rip rap meets Lewes Yacht club. I've have seen quite a few of 22 to 23 inches come out of the inlet over the past week. Good numbers of flatties are also coming off the public dock just outside my door, the old boat ramp, the new ramp, and off the pier in the state park. The pier is also yielding spot, croakers, and quite a few flounder. If you have a small child who wants to catch fish - get him some bloodworms and/or Fishbites, along with a pack of chartruese GULP baits and take him to the pier.

If you want to try something different, pick a high tide after dark and toss a half a SPOT or chunk of bunker into the surf on a big hook with a wire leader. We hooked three fish one night last week and never turned a one of them. Two of them headed for France on the express train - emptying the spool in less than a minute. I don't think one of them even knew he was hooked - just swam off steadily against an increasingly tight drag, until he took all the line..... and my older son is an ocean lifeguard swimming with those things.....

    INDIAN RIVER INLET

BLUEFISH have been wandering in and out of the inlet with the tides and a real nice STRIPER bite has developed in the rip in front of the Coast Guard station. There were a few days last week when the action held up most of the day, but best action on the linesiders seems to be at night. Next time you see an moving tide just after dark, you need to tell the wife you have a (fishing) fever and need to take a little ride to cool off. Be careful on those rocks - don't even try to fish off the jetties without the right footwear and a good dose of common sense.

    Hot Tip of the Day!

Jump on the full day headboat with Capt Rick - in addition to that 11 lb flounder yesterday, there were a dozen or so caught that went over 3 lbs.

Norma K Fleet Fishing Report, Point Pleasant, NJ, 7-17-10

    July 16, 2010
Fluke fishing this week was a little slow due to the big ground swell coming from the Southeast. We did see a few fluke every trip with a few sea bass and ling. As this the ground swell dies down and the bottom settles down, the bite should get a lot better.

Bluefishing remains very good at night with most fish ranging anywhere from 6-15lbs. Bunkers and butterfish have been the best bait. Also a few anglers using jigs caught them as well.
Last night was a tough night though. There were fish seen, but were not caught. Every night is different, but overall fishing for Blues has been good.

For more information, please feel free to e-mail us or give us a shout at the NormaKIII hotline number 732-496-5383.

    Hope to see you soon,
    Capt. Matt
