Arrow Need Recommendation for marlin trip from Indian River Inlet

** First post here. Lots of great info. I have a boat in Galveston TX. Mostly fish jetties for redfish and black drum. Then beachfront tarpon, sharks, jacks. Also offshore kingfish and snapper. Long run here to get to the pelagics. I have a 23' so my range is limited. Anyway.....

Making the trip up from Houston in Mid-August and looking to make a white marlin my 7th billfish species caught. Any help is appreciated!

Mid-August is a good time of year to get 'em.

You may want to save yourself some fuel and trailer the boat an extra 45 minutes to Ocean City, MD. It's a shorter run to the canyons.

    Advice:

    1. Check the reports here.
    2. Buy an offshore chart so you get the #s for the canyons
    3. Check SST before you go.

Good luck, and catch 'em up!!

I run from IR and like Bohica said with a 23' boat I would reccomend traveling 30 minutes south to OC Md. there is a sweet public launch and the trip is closer and the inlet is friendlier. Stay tuned here for updates on the latest action when the time gets closer. Mid August you will be just after the WMO and there should be some good intel and lips won't be quite as tight as when the big tourny is running.

The advise that you received about launching out of OC right on. I would even consider moving down the coast to chincoteague. From chincoteague it's a little over 50 miles to the wash canyon- poormans in the same ballpark.
Some summers I have seen marlin around lumpy bottom which is just about halfway to the Wash. Also 30 fathom lumps can hold fish. I don't target marlin but have picked them up on ballywhoos rigged with seawitches blue and white seem to work best for me. Would recommend you drag a teaser.I run one off a cleat about 50/60 foot back. The real marlin pros do a lot with pitch baits/ teasing but it's is a real skill that takes practice. Had two marlin the summer before last both at the same time both hit the flatlines just behind the boat. I did an article for Big Game Fishing journal a couple of years ago entitled" Small boat Fishing offshore Virginia style" You might want to get hold of a copy. The key pick your day and be sure of your boats range and condition. Lets not kid ourselfs a run to the deep in a 23 footer can get interesting but I do it a lot with my 27.

OK..... I think I have an even better plan. Going to fly up and hire a pro to take us. Who is "the man" for white marlin at Indian River?? We are going to stay right there close at a campground, so, trying to focus on fishing from this area.

Will have 2 or 3 guys. Fish minimum of two days.

    Thanks for all the help!!!

since I run the bait and tackle store at the Indian River Marina I don't want to single any one boat over another. But I could recommend that you go to www.indianrivercharters.com. to find something that would fit your needs. Good luck and hope to see you at the tackle store.

Man you're quick!! Yes, I can recommend Cowboy!! Good guy, good fisherman......had a great tuna season last year with that a couple big ones over 100lbs ( I hope I am remembering that right) Sorry I don't remember the record on the marlin, you might have to toot your on horn on that. (by the way it is Deanna, Bert doesn't know how to do this....plus he is putting new motors in the Judy V. today) Can't wait for spring (sorta)

    White Marlin fishing

Contact Capt. Terry Murray for your White Marlin trip. He's the man and he knows how to catch 'em.
    email him at res208x1@verizon.net

Ask anyone at Indian River, they'll tell ya. He has caught several on my boat and i wouldn't go marlin fishing without him. Here's a pic of him with one during this past summer. He's the guy with the bill in his hand in case some of you guys haven't seen him in a while.

Good Luck and catch em up!

i would still recomend headin to Ocean City, MD. we a bit closer to where the Marlin Bite nomally is, plus there are alot of really good marlin boats that fish out of sunset marina, in ocean city.

    http://www.ocsunsetmarina.com/

    The Cyntinory
    Pumpin Hard
    Espadon
    Fin-ness

are some of the best boats around for white marlin fishing.

o yea we're not to shabby either on the Marlin Magic.
