There's no shortage of striped bass fishing tournaments between now and early next year.

But a new one that will take place between Christmas and New Year's is poised to become the big daddy of them all.

That's a lofty statement, with the Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shootout in January and the Toys for Tots event in a couple of weeks, but the inaugural Million Dollar Rockfish Challenge has incorporated big money prizes, several fishing options and a striped bass cooking challenge.

The event is set for Dec. 26-30 out of Marina Shores in Virginia Beach.

Insurance policies have been secured so that tournament officials can offer $1 million to any team breaking the International Game Fish Association all-tackle world record of 78 pounds, 8 ounces. That mark isn't beyond the realm of possibilities, given that the Virginia state record is 73 pounds.

If a team breaks just the state record, there's $250,000 waiting for it.

And if 300 teams enter, there will be a $50,000 first-place prize no matter.

Adding to a big-time tournament feel will be Leader's Row, a set of docks where leading teams will sit in order of placement until they either win or are bumped out by other boats.

Teams can fish as many as three days during the event, but registrations are based on each day of competition. Multiple entry levels are available.

Winning weights will be based on a two-fish limit, with no fish under 34 inches allowed. Cash prize payouts will be from the first-place prize to $500 for 10th.

Enhancing the chances of some really heavy weights is the fact that anglers will be able to fish the Chesapeake Bay or along the Oceanfront. In previous years during the time period, some of the biggest striper have come from the area south of Kiptopeke on the Eastern Shore.

Anglers can employ any legal method to catch their fish - either live-baiting, casting or trolling.

For information on the Challenge, call (757) 496-7000 or go to www.milliondollarrockfishchallenge.com.

    GOT FISH? NOw COOK 'EM

Some anglers love to brag about how good they are in the kitchen once they've returned home with their catch.

They'll get a chance to prove it.

The Million Dollar Rockfish Cookoff will run in conjunction with the striper tournament.

Amateur and professional cooks can compete.

While there won't be a chance to win $1 million, some pretty big prize money will be offered.

The amateur champ will take home $2,500, while the pro will pocket $10,000.

Entry for amateurs is $100, $250 for pros.

"Amateurs can enter the pro division if they think they are good enough," tournament spokeswoman Taylor Malbon said.

"But not the other way around."

Each cook can have a two-person team to help.

Amateurs will compete Dec. 28. The pros will start competing Dec. 29, with their finals set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 30.

On Dec. 30, the public can attend the six-finalist cookoff for $20 - which will include fish and all the fixings.

To enter or for information, call (757) 496-7000.

I am thinking about possibly fishing this tournament

Just hoping the stars align for me to get down there and steal a boat for the weekend.

    Shall see!

    Anyone else fishing this tourney?

This would be a new one for me, it appears to be like the MARS tournament down there without the politics of who is eeling who is trolling etc...

Apparently my comment on "politics" was taken out of context and I just want to clear it up

Let me explain my comment a little more.

My comment wasn't directed at the format for say, its more among the anglers. Like fun poking around the docks between the boats participating

Mary, No worries on our end. So you all will know, the Mid Atlantic Rockfish Shootout is 100% payout on the entry. We are finally getting close to paying down the room we built for the Children's Hospital and decided last year we were going to pay out 100% on the entry. We were lucky to pick up a few new sponsors to help with that.
Anyhow, where is Chuck anyway. Have not seen him in a while?

It is really nice what you guys do with the tournament and I am glad you guys have some good sponsors behind you as well! They are hard to come by!

Chuck speaking not really sure where he hiding I havent spoke to him since the spring. Not sure where he is at these days.

Maybe we will see you down there this winter! In my honest opinion there is no better bass fishing/rock fishing than Va Beach and the surrounding areas.

Good to hear that there are bluefins in the area as well, I think I got tangled up with one on an eel a few years ago in your tourney what a let down not seeing it at the surface ...

    Happy Holidays!

Sorry for the delay, I do not look at this often. The fish the first day were 13 down, 2nd 21, 3rd and 4th day about 23 to 26 down. Great class of fish. They were moving south pretty fast then slowed down. Plenty more coming, just hope this cold snap lets them keep coming inside.
