Matador drum report 5-14

John Angelson wanted me to take his son out and catch him a drum, so we thought last night would be the night. After he picked his son up from school, we met at the boat armed with clams and crabs around 330. We started off east of the high rise looking for blacks and sat and waited and waited. After 2 hours of waiting without a run, we decided to go and anchor off fishermans island in 8 feet of water and look for reds. Well, this proved to be the ticket and with 15 minutes of being on the anchor we hooked a double of nice fish. The first fish came to the boat after a 25 minute fight and 9 year old Paul Angelson caught his first redfish citation with a beautiful 48'' bull. The second fish of the double was quickly subdued and met the net after ten minutes and measured in at a gigantic 50.5''. After catching these two, we put lines back in the water for about 15 minutes before returning home. It was a very quick trip, and though we only had two bites, we made them count. Both reds were caught on whole shelled peelers. Some boats in the same area were also having success on peelers and I noticed one boat was using chunks of cut bait and was steadily catching dogfish and skates. We did not catch and doggies or skates, so I guess peelers were definitely the ticket. This was Paulies second trip with me in a few months and his second citation he has caught. This kid is on a tear and next he has spades in his sights...
I will be posting pictures later today and I will be fishing again this afternoon with Dr. Julie Ball, targetting drum again.
