Massey's & Hambone 8/7

Mike and I fished with Dan on his new to him 36′ sportfish. With nasty weather forcasted we didnt depart Indian River Marina until about 5:30. We set a course to Massey’s Canyon to set up on the troll. We ran a 10 rod spread with a bird GM WWB, skirted ballyhoo on the riggers, bars of the boat, a naked and skirted hoo on the flats as well as a wahoo bait on the planer.

We worked Masseys for a while with nothing but a mystery bite on the long that didn’t come tight. After a few hours we trolled south to the Hambone where we picked up a 13lb Skipjack that took the bird/green machine chain on the shotgun. We circled a few times and hooked another skippy on the same rod but it came unbuttoned near the boat. We worked the hambone hard then started trolling back towards Masseys. Along the way we had two Mahi come into the spread. The bull took a Reel Draggin Tackle Jet & Bird Combo in pink & white off the flat. This rig in a Mahi killer. It went just over 10 lbs. The Cow hit a naked ballyhoo rigged split bill off the flat swimming just behind the dredge. This is another rig that has produced a bigger grade of Mahi. It’s typical for the bigger Mahi to swim in pairs so we were happy to get both of them. The cow was bigger @ 16lbs.

We trolled for a few more hours with no action, packing it up just after 5. Overall there was very little life out there. Didn’t mark any bait or see and turtles, sunfish or birds. Thankfully the wind laid down and gave us a smooth ride home. I’ll get the pics up as soon as they are emailed to me.
