March 19th and 20th Sword Report...

Fishing on the Big Boy with Capt. Jason and myself, we took the Canyon Runner charter group of Joe Crisali (sorry about the spelling Joe) out for two nights of swordfishing. Fishing Saturday night, the 19th, we started on the 26.00 and the 49.5. Conditions were great with only a slight NE swell still around, and a drift taking us to the NNE at 2knts optimism was high for a good sword bite. By 8:00 there was a lot of chatter on the radio about a decent bite going off about 6 mile south of us, so after releasing a small shark we reset a little south, but on the same line. At 9:30 we finally got a bite on the close float, 100’ down with a dead tinker, and I came tight. It was back and fourth for the first 10 minutes, then the fish peeled off 150yds and the fight had now begun! After 35 minutes the fish surfaced and we backed down to him and got within 50ft, he then made a nice jump and sounded pulling 200ft off like nothing. From then on the runs got shorter and shorter and with fresh anglers being rotated through the rod it wouldn’t be long before we had this beast boat side. After 1 hour and 15 minutes I got hold of the leader brought him up a few feet and Jason planted the ‘poon right through the gill plate, game over. Fish still looked nice in the water, but when we got it in the boat we realized what we had! The fish taped out at 80” from fork to lower jaw and weighed in at 262lbs. Got the lines back in the water just a little before 11pm and after a few minutes the long float started moving and the charter was tight again on a sword. This one, which was wrapped around the bill, came quick and we released the 65lb- 49” sword to die another day.
Sunday the 20th we headed out again with Joe and company, and unfortunately expectations were high. Setting up in the same area we found plenty of tinkers again, but no sword bites. We had one bite all night and it turned out to be what looked like a smallish mako, 100lbs or so, which bit through the leader.
