I made it a point yesturday to splash my boat and head out on a recon mission. With the water temps. rising and that spawning time of year just around the corner I was hoping to find some signs of rockfish on the move. I was happy with what I saw. Previously barren channel edges are now starting to show some signs of life. I was able to mark schools of fish traveling in the deeper waters. The average bay water tempuratures are still cold this early in March, around 39*F. With tempuratures like they where in the main bay, the fish are still a bit lathargic and it is not easy to draw a bite, but they are beginning to show up in the bay. I stopped by a few locations that hold warm water through out the winter months and as expected I found the rock fish there much more willing to cooperate. With water temps over 45* the rockfish cooperated nicely and we rounded out the day with a little catch and release action on light tackle. Folks, as the warm weather arrives the rockfish will kick into high gear and the fishing stands to be excellent. I will continue to post the details of my "find and observe" recon missions thoughout the spring month. As always, Captain Mike and myself welcome you to join us for the Chesapeake Bay Trophy Season, which starts April 16th. Come out and enjoy a day of great fishing and great friends aboard the Bill$ 4 Bills.
I did the same thing at the rips yesterday chilli. But the bite wasn't all out gangbuster. I'd give it another week and I think things will be really starting to look good then.
I would have to agree with you. If the current weather pattern continues we may well be looking at another phenominal spring season. Things are looking very good. I hope you find some good early season fishing. Good luck out there!
Nice report Chilli. It shows me the light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer. Good luck and can't wait for when they show up here. Good Luck this season!
