mackerel in the Mud Hole
Captain Jimmy Elliot of the Miss Belmar Princess, Belmar, (732) 284-9709 and the Dauntless, Point Pleasant, (908) 892-4298 have been following the mackerel schools out in the Mud Hole and the schools are roughly 14 miles offshore with the captains staying on them day-to-day. Herring are also mixed in with the macks, but both species are hitting the same types of rigs. Two of the most common types of mackerel rigs are one, the "Christmas Tree" rig, which consists of a three hook rig with -- inch green, yellow and orange tubes spaced evenly apart every 16 inches or so, with a bank sinker looped on the end. And two, the general sabiki type of rig with small feathers, or mylar flash flies tied around a small size 6 hook. Both rigs work wonders to land macks, but the herring tend to gravitate toward hitting the sabiki rig as the sabiki flies are smaller in stature and can be readily inhaled easier for the herring.

Thanks for the info Captain. I gotta get stocked up on Mack's before the toothy critters start showing up in a few months
