OCTOBER 25,2011
INSHORE:
Bass action has slowed down some with pods of fish here and there, but no steady action to speak of. These fish are still to our north as the boys in Montauk are still enjoying some excellent fishing! The water temps are still way to warm. Lets hope we do not see a 2 week season like we have in the past due to the water temps dropping too quickly and the fish moving through our area too fast. A few fish have been caught on small bunker spoons such as Skips Mini Bunker Spoons, top-water plugs, jigs and shad rigs. Once it breaks open, we will be sure to keep you posted.
Tog fishermen are enjoying some excellent fishing, but are only allowed 1 fish right now. Shallow water is giving up some pretty big fish recently along with some nice sized porgy for the table. The inshore rough bottom has been a steady fishery for bottom fishing. Stay inside of that 55-60 ft area, as shallow as 25ft to enjoy non stop action for both tog and porgy. Both crabs and clams have been working on the tog and the porgy are taking clams, with double and triple headers coming up on multi hook rigs daily!
OFFSHORE:
The bluefin tuna have been hanging around the usual spots in the Mud Hole, AP Area, 30 Line and the local wrecks from as close as 20 miles out to 50 miles. Trolling, jigging and chunking has all worked for them. Green Machine style trolling lures, ballyhoo, and running deeper lures will work on the troll. Tonno Jigs, Spanko Jigs, even Cape May Tackle Diamond Jigs have all worked on the jigging side when the fish are spotted in schools. Several fishermen have tried chunking for them with some great results as well. Butterfish and sardines are both the choice baits for chunking and they seem to both be working about the same right now.
SURF FISHING:
Local beaches have been quiet except for the occasional small blitz here or there. Casino Pier area was hot late last week, but died off in time for the weekend! Thunderbird stretch saw some good fishing yesterday, but was silent again this morning. We are all waiting for the water temps to drop a little more and get these fish into our area. Plenty of good fishing is still happening up on Long Island, so we have yet to see the main body of migrating striped bass move into our area yet! It should start to happen very soon and we will keep you posted!
Small weakfish and small bluefish are all over the surf right now. Problem is........they are very small! Im talking about 8-12 inches in size! More of a pest or bait thief than anything else. We had a few bass weighed in that were up to 26lbs last week, but they came from inside in the river. All fo the bigger fish were caught on top water plugs near the RR Bridge.
