Light Tackle Catching Large Striped Bass on 4/2/09
On Wednesday night the weather forecast called for an overcast day on Thursday....highs in the mid 60's, with winds out of the east from 6 to 9 mph. This was the last day of a warm front, better know as a good day to fish. I called up Bill Johnson and we agreed to fish on Thursday. Tools selected were light spinning and baitcasting equipment , and to practice catch & release, if we caught any stripers.
After we agreed on the location to fish, I went to my current chart and listed the times of when the swiftest currents crossed a variety of locations we'd be in. Doing this paid off because a thick fog had set in keeping visibility down to a half a mile. This meant you had to be at the right location at the right time to catch fish.
We pulled up on a location that would have an outgoing (ebb) current from 0.4 kts to 0.6kts between 2:30 pm, until 5:30 pm. Bill caught the 1st striper at 2:49 pm, and we stayed on them until 5:15 pm before we headed home.
These fish were holding in 49.5 degree water and there was no doubt when they hit the lure.
Most Productive Technique:
Vertical Jigging the Bottom: Cast the lure. Let it drop to the bottom, then lift your rod tip swiftly from 9 o’clock to 10 o’clock then follow the lure back down to the bottom keeping a tight line. Repeat this again and again. Striped bass will take the lure when it stops or starts to fall.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Tom Hughes
