“It ain’t over yet”- L.B.I. Fishing report-11-30-09-By Bob Misak
This past week wasn’t bad at all for the surfsters who toughed it out and stayed on the sands fishing in the L.B.I. surf classic, and they made themselves known. From Wednesday to Friday two people weighed in bass and blues; Ray and Joann Sullivan. They were literally relentless this week with Joann weighing in an 11.56 lb. blue and Ray joining her at the scales with a 19 lb. bass. On Thursday Joann came back to redeem herself in the category and top Ray with a 19.94 lb. linesider. But Ray would have no part of it, and he came in on Friday with a 28.25 lb. Bass! Joe Carmelengo jumped in on Thursday as well with an 11lb. blue. As far as I can see on the board (and I can’t see too well) it was the Sullivan show for most of the week. Then on Saturday all our hopes were realized when yet another 30 lb. plus bass hit the shops down south; Brian Mcallister smacked himself a 39.94 bass, coming incredibly close to dumping our five week leader Michael Zane, who has a 42.64 bass. (That’s under a lb!) I’m willing to bet that fish made Michael flinch a little! On Sunday Don Ingling, a former winner in the derby brought in a 20 lb. bass to be weighed and eaten, and a 10.50 bluefish came in from Tom Gardiner. So as expected another run of decent fish are moving through, and the winds will die off again this week with a pinch of precipitation tossed in there. It should be good fishing on the sands, and the shop has bunker and clams for the persistent surfsters, you know, the ones catching fish. Holgate has been the favorite spot for most.
There are still some really nice bass coming out of the bay by the guys who are drifting spots, and with the water temps perfect for bassin’ at 54 to 56 degrees and masses of sand eels moving in and out, the fishing is far from over. We have a couple more good weeks to catch bass, and who knows, maybe a 50 lb. fish will come in so Basil don’t look like a buffoon. The shop has still been able to secure some spots, but I can’t say how long they’ll be available.
Off the jetty rocks some nice blackfish are being taken, and the shop sells out of green crabs pretty quickly, so call ahead for the availability of both green crabs and spots-609 494 4566- the boats fishing the local wrecks are also slamming some sweet white chins, with regular catches of 5 to 7 lb. fish coming in to the scales. This week coming up is an excellent week to fly out to a wreck to load up on a six fish limit of togs before you consider taking the boat out. The guys that are bass fishing outside are also loading their boats, with a good day being a 30 to 40 fish day with six or seven keeps in the box. Spots and Ava jigs are the ticket for that, and as mentioned, it just ain’t over yet! This is when the tough bass guys get going, because they know there are big fish to the north! Good luck and great fishing to everyone.
