Capt. Art Conway of Conway's River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen's Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the mid 70's in the lower lake on Wednesday. The lake level was about a foot above the top of the dam and the water was heavily stained but not muddy in the lower lake. Some of the creeks had some muddy water in the upper ends. Numerous small and a few medium bluegill were scattered along parts of the lake shoreline. Larger bluegill, shellcrackers, white perch, blue cats, channel cats, and crappie were scattered on flats and along the outer edges of flats. Wright Bait Co. and Southern Pro one and two inch curly tail grubs, tubes, small swim baits, roadrunners, Kalin crappie scrubs, worms, and live minnows have been the most effective baits for bluegill, perch, and crappie. Bass have been spotted chasing baitfish on some of the flats in the lower lake in the early mornings. Fishing with Capt. Conway, Carolyn Conway had 27 bluegill, 2 shellcrackers, 9 crappie, 1 channel cat, and 3 bass. Hollis Pruitt and Malcolm Turnbull had 11 bluegill, 1 shellcracker, 10 crappie, 1 blue cat, and 2 bass.
