Capt. Art Conway of Conway's River Rat Guide Service (804-746-2475) out of Ed Allen's Boats and Bait reported that Chickahominy Lake mid-day water temperatures were in the low to mid 70's on Wednesday. The lake level was still about 6 inches below the top of the dam, but will probably rise in the next few days due to the rain. A few bluegill, crappie and yellow perch were still on some of the main lake weed flats and in the mouths of the major creeks. Look for crappies that have been up the creeks to drop down to the creek mouth areas during the next several weeks. Wright Bait Co. two inch curly tail grubs, tubes, swim baits, and live minnows have been the most effective baits for crappie and yellow perch. Bass were still scattered in the creeks and out on the main lake flats, especially early in the mornings. Some bass were on wood cover or around cypress trees, but most were in weed beds early in the day. We should have early morning bass surface activity over the next several weeks as baitfish that are up the creeks drop out of the creeks and migrate down the lake.
