The month of April has finally passed, and I for one am glad to see it go. It was a tough month for my charters, with 9 out of 10 weekend charters canceled due to weather. If it wasn't for the weekdays, we might not have gotten in any fishing.
The bottom fishing for blackfish was hit and miss. On Monday, 4/18 I had a shared charter fill their limit of blackfish along with a number of throwbacks. The weather was great and the fishing was about as good as spring tog fishing gets. Big fish of the day was 9 pounds.
Wednesday, 4/27 I fished for Tom Schad and his party. We caught over two dozen fish, but there were a lot of little ones, and there were only a couple of spots I could get them to bite.
Friday, 4/29 the Fred Verdi party got into the tog pretty good, catching nearly 80 fish and coming up just short of a limit catch. Fish were to 6 pounds.
Saturday, 4/30 saw another shared charter and we were on the "miss" cycle. Today's catch was around 20 fish, with 8 keepers for the box, including our first keeper sea bass of the year. We also saw the first dogfish, so you know the water is still cold.
The mackeral are gone, with just a 4 day window on them this year. Bluefish are in the bay now, with a mix of both bigger fish from 6-8 pounds on bait and smaller fish (2-4 pounds) on lures.
