Joanee - Yellowfins Still Chewin' Good, 7/11

We finally got on the yellows pretty good yesterday after a slow start to out 2010 canyon season. I wouldn't describe yesterdays bite as wide open but it was pretty good once we found the fish.

We started the day right on the hundred where most have been catching and after working around for a while we found the fish and the bait inside on the 50. The first shot of the day was a double header of a white marlin and a tuna. The white came up and whacked the green/yellow Ilander with bally on the left flat and after a quick drop back I had him on. We eventually pulled him off but not before he ran across Bill's line and broke off our first tuna of the day as well as my red hot Sterling Tackle green magic machine bar . Thankfully I had another Zucchini colored squid bar that went out in its place which was equally as effective. After this we got back up on the troll and stayed within a mile or so of where we had our first bites in the morning and the fish and bait seemed to stay in that general area all day. I'm not sure what we were marking down there but we would occasionally run over real nice sized pods of bait down about 200 feet. We continued to pick at them until we had 5 decent fish in the box up to 65 lbs which was plenty of meat for us and all we wanted to take home. Again, the fish didn't really seem to have a preference for bait or plastic but we did notice that we didn't get any bites on the shot gun lures or on spreader bars without the birds on the front. I'm not sure if this was just a coincidence or what, but just something we observed yesterday.

I would say we ended up somewhere in the ballpark of 5 for 7 on the yellowfins with a couple other explosions on the baits that never came tight. We also had a few other mystery bites on the flat line ballyhoo that we think were white marlin and we also lost a nice Dolphin at the leader that was probably 15 lbs. All in all a good day and as many others have stated we can only hope it continues through the summer. The water looked pretty good and we were reading 77.2 degrees where we fished yesterday. It also sounded like people were doing good to the north of us on the 50 line south of the Lindy so there seems like a lot of fish spread out up and down the line right now. Good luck to anyone that heads out this week!

Thanks again to John (jvtuna) for taking us, Sterling Tackle for providing us with top notch lures and spreader bars and to the rest of the hard working crew yesterday for making things go about as smooth as they ever could in the cockpit. Seared tuna and fresh NJ sweet corn tonight!

Nice report! Glad to hear they are still around. We need a good season for a change.

I like fishing at least one bird in the spread, some guys don't like them because they think they draw the fish away from the other baits. So, I guess WWB may not be the place for them, but they DO work don't they.

They definitely work that's for sure and we do get a lot of tuna bites on the green machine daisy chain with a 9" bird in front of it but for some reason yesterday they were liking the stuff in closer.

I hope a body of fish move into your area for you guys to get on!
