FISHING REPORT
Mon Sept 5th
Happy Labor Day
First thing this morning we want to wish you all a Safe and Happy Labor Day.
We are open today untill 5.
This morning it is 71 and we have a south wind gusting to 15. The ocean is 73 this morning. I can hear the ocean this morning so watch for a strong current and take some heavy sinkers with you.
Looks like the rain may hold off for a while today but after that it looks like some rain for a few days. We were very lucky here on LBI this summer having very little rain so it looks like it is pay back time.
We have cut back our store hours a little for the next couple of weeks till the fall derby begins. We will be closing at 3 on Wed. Weather permitting I would not mind getting some fishing in myself.
Sun Sept 4th
Cloudy overcast day with the air and water at 75. Muggy day with a SW wind around 10. Small craft warnings are keeping anglers close today.
Where are the fluke? Is it the dirty water that has shut them down for us? Boats fishing outside on the reefs are coming home empty. Some are stopping off in the bay and finding a few shorts.
It may not be what you are looking for but yes we do have fish.
Bay fishing for small fishing is terriffic!!!
Blowfish is on a lot of dinner tables. Other small fish are in the mix including some king fish.
Crabbing up the creeks is better for catching crabs.
Bluefish (large snappers) are a hit for for surfcasters. King fish are also in the surf with mixed sizes.
Offshore was great for some and other nothing. Like usually if and when you hooked up with tuna it was multiple fish. Water is still dirty until you get off to about 50 fathoms.
Sat Sept 3rd
Good morning!!
We wish everybody a great and safe holiday weekend.
This morning it is 66 with a SW wind about 5 and the ocean is 76.
Feeling like fall once again. Before you know it the mullet will be here to kick off our fall season of fishing. Speaking of kicking I want to wish my grandson Austin good luck today in his first college football game. Watch for that #5 playing for Lafayette.
Fishing has remained about the same all week with fluke being hard to find. The bay and from a mile off the beach remain dirty.
The surf has been constant with small bluefish on mullet and mullet rigs and some king fish.
The bay has been great for pan sized fish with a lot of nice size blow fish. Anchor up and chum and then use clam, squid or worms on small hooks for these tasty fish. Great fishing for kids and grandkids.
Sea bass have been the best bet for ocean fisherman finding them in 70 to 80 feet of water.
For those of you heading offshore the water is dirty to you hit about the 50 fathom mark.
Fri Sept 2nd
Feeling like fall this am. We have a lite east wind with an air temp of 67 and the ocean is 77.
What a difference a week makes. Last Friday we were preparing for Irene with putting away, moving this or tying things up. Or last year for Labor Day we were getting ready for Earl. The beach had opened in Holgate to 4 wheel drive vehicles only to close for tides. This year the weather looks to be fairly good so we hope everyone has a great weekend.
The waters are still closed for clamming and they are including surf clams in this closure. We do have clams but only salted in the container.
Despite the dirty water in the bay the blowfish are still biting. A report yesterday from Mike: Mike and Steve fished in the lower bay and had 38 good sized ones that they kept. Mike informed me that they also had kingfish in the mix and that the sea bass had slowed down.
