The entrance to Holgate Wildlife Refuge has been delayed because of severe erosion problems. No trucks or walkers are allowed. The target date to open is Sept. 9th.

If you are planning on going to Holgate Wildlife Refuge by boat they will be marking off a boundry so you can not get near the the entrance. This is being done for everyones safety.

FISHING REPORT

Fri Sept 2nd

Feeling like fall this am. We have a lite east wind with an air temp of 67 and the ocean is 77.

What a difference a week makes. Last Friday we were preparing for Irene with putting away, moving this or tying things up. Or last year for Labor Day we were getting ready for Earl. The beach had opened in Holgate to 4 wheel drive vehicles only to close for tides. This year the weather looks to be fairly good so we hope everyone has a great weekend.

The waters are still closed for clamming and they are including surf clams in this closure. We do have clams but only salted in the container.

Despite the dirty water in the bay the blowfish are still biting. A report yesterday from Mike: Mike and Steve fished in the lower bay and had 38 good sized ones that they kept. Mike informed me that they also had kingfish in the mix and that the sea bass had slowed down.

Thurs Sept 1st

Improvement over night on crabbing. Some nice size crabs at the dock and in the creeks.

Via Carl Clark :Great bite in the Baltimore on tuna. They lost as many as they caught. The water was crystal clear and blue. He also told us the fish were deep. Thanks for the update Carl.

Nice morning with an air temp of 68 and the water is 73. We have a lite wind out of the north.

Clamming is still closed because of the storm.

A lot of folk coming into town last night. Looks like they are making a long weekend out of the holiday.

Just like the people the fish are slowly returning. The beach had fish right after the storm with numerous bluefish on mullet. (big snappers). King fish were caught yesterday but the ones reported to us were very tiny. Before the storm the beach was very flat with no cuts well I think it is just the same after the storm if not flatter. During the storm the waves did not beat the beach leaving drop offs on the dunes like we see in a north easter. It looks like they gently rolled up on the beach not causing a severe erosion problem.

When you are on the beach the water looks very clean but in the boat in the bay and out on the reefs is a different story. Water clarity is between 2 and 3 feet. We do have reports of fluke being caught at the fish factory area yes there were some keepers but numerous throw it backs. Same story around the research buoys. Both areas had small -tiny bluefish. Reminder that fishing for sea bass closes on Sept 11 for these tasty fish and then will reopen Nov 1st. The fishery council is looking at new regulations on them for next year.

Street ends for blow fish and snappers and a few crabs. Crabbing has shown improvement up the creeks.

We had a few boats that headed offshore late afternoon yesterday so we are waiting on a report from them when they return
