FISHING REPORT

Thurs Sept 1st

Nice morning with an air temp of 68 and the water is 73. We have a lite wind out of the north.

Clamming is still closed because of the storm.

A lot of folk coming into town last night. Looks like they are making a long weekend out of the holiday.

Just like the people the fish are slowly returning. The beach had fish right after the storm with numerous bluefish on mullet. (big snappers). King fish were caught yesterday but the ones reported to us were very tiny. Before the storm the beach was very flat with no cuts well I think it is just the same after the storm if not flatter. During the storm the waves did not beat the beach leaving drop offs on the dunes like we see in a north easter. It looks like they gently rolled up on the beach not causing a severe erosion problem.

When you are on the beach the water looks very clean but in the boat in the bay and out on the reefs is a different story. Water clarity is between 2 and 3 feet. We do have reports of fluke being caught at the fish factory area yes there were some keepers but numerous throw it backs. Same story around the research buoys. Both areas had small -tiny bluefish. Reminder that fishing for sea bass closes on Sept 11 for these tasty fish and then will reopen Nov 1st. The fishery council is looking at new regulations on them for next year.

Street ends for blow fish and snappers and a few crabs. Crabbing has shown improvement up the creeks.

We had a few boats that headed offshore late afternoon yesterday so we are waiting on a report from them when they return

Wed Aug 31st

Some people call the glass half full and some call it half empty.
I know a lot of people are dissapointed that Holgate is not opening to trucks and walkers tomorrow but on the postive side they are going to work on fixing it.

If this erosion problem had happened on Federal Goverment property we would not be back down there so thank heavens for small favors that it happened on township property.
There is suppose to be a press release on Holgate tomorrow in the paper

****This morning there was a meeting with the engineers to make a decision on the Holgate situation. They are going to try to open it next Friday.

Late report this morning.

At 10:30 we have a beautiful day here at the beach. The wind is from the SW at about 5.The ocean is 74 and the air is the same.

Once again I want to say how lucky that I feel that our island was spared from Irene.

We have people coming in with horror stories of what has happened in their home towns. We wish them the best of luck.

I am still waiting to hear of time frame of theopening for the south end.

Fishing in the bay has not come back strong yet. The water is still dirty making it hard to see your white gulp down at 2 foot. There are blowfish in the crab traps and a snapper bluefish are being caught from street ends.

A lot of dolphins swimming off the beach making for a pretty sight.

There are small bluefish in the inlet along with small bluefish being caught from the surf.
