Jim's Bait and Tackle report, Cape may 5-9-10

The drum are starting to bite on the Delaware side of the Delaware Bay. the Down Deep boated 3 fish on the coral beds at Slaughter Beach. the fish are being marked on the NJ side but don't seem to be biting. Hopefully they will turn on later this week. Surf fisherman are getting some drum from the beaches.

Bass action is slow in the lower Bay. Most guys are running to reef site #2 up to Ship John light in the upper bay. Bunker seems to be the best bait.

Capt. Nick on the Bubuca went to the Hot dog to try a litttle shark fishing. He had 61 degree water and a lot of dogfish. An estimated 200 lb mako came thru the slick, hit a couple of baits and swam away. A good sign this time of the year.

The surf has started to turn on in Cape May. A lot of drum have been weighed in from 7 pounds to a 67 1/2 pounder caught by John cross on Poverty Beach. saturday the bass turned on during the incoming tide. Jim's is running a bass tournament for the month of May. Entry is $20. Single heaviest bass wins a 10' Starrod, a Shimano 8000D baitrunner and a trophy. Tournament ends on the 31st.
There have been a few weigh ins so far. Ed Rorher of North Cape may weighed in a 13.5 lb and a 14.5 lb bass on Saturday. The leader is a 23 1/2 pounder by E.C. Pecorelli of Cape May on Poverty Beach. There are a lot of bass around so 23 1/2 is beatable.
For the boat guys some cod are still being caught in the 20-30 mile range.
