OCEAN-
Plenty of fluke around now with a good amount of big fish being caught on the local reefs, snags and hills. Recently, the fluke bite has exploded in deeper water with boats averaging fish no smaller than 21" in the cooler! Prior to this, the big fluke were scattered and we were not seeing as many fish this size being caught daily. Killies, spearing, peanut bunker and peruvian smelts have been the favorite baits for our customers. The color orange has been the best choice recently fo rlarger fish as well! OMT Bucktails have been very popular because of their smaller hook sizes that are available up to 12ozs! The same rough bottom is giving up some better seabass catches now as well. We were out today in the rough water and we did very well with large fluke, seabass up to 5lbs and even large bluefish going 15lbs near The Rattlesnake. There are plenty of fluke still in the shallow waters just off the beaches, but the bigger fish are in deeper water right now.

Inshore trolling is also in full swing now with mahi mahi, bluefin and even the occasional yellowfin tuna being caught from 10 miles out to 30 miles. We have bluefin being caught from the Mudhole right on down into the flats near the Lillian Wreck. Trolling has been the best way to catch these tuna, but in the last week, jigs are starting to work better than they have worked in the last few weeks due to higher water temps now driving the fish deeper into the cooler water. Jersey Jay's Tonno, Shibi and Sake Jigs have all been catching tuna both inshore and offshore! Blue, Pink and Silver are the 3 best colors to use when jigging. If your looking to set out a spread to troll inshore, you need to have Green Machines or Ballyhoo onboard. Mini Green Machine Spreader Bars and Daisy Chains have been red hot for tuna, along with smaller feathers and jets for mahi mahi. The Mahi Jet is catching mahi mahi daily for many boats trolling inshore now. These small jets are only 5.5" in size, but their inverted jet head creates a giant smoke trail.

The Hudson went dirty Wednesday and the action slowed down Thursday too. Right now, we are seeing more fish inshore of the Hudson. Until the clean water returns, look inshore of the Hudson for better action. The Glory, Chicken and the flats south of there ares till keeping bluefin fishermen busy as of yesterday. When trolling edges, it seems that a zig-zag pattern is working much better than trolling along the edge. This is easy to do with no traffic, but when its busy out there, it is not that easy to do. Whenever you have the chance, troll that zig-zag over the edges for better action!

BAY-RIVER-
Plenty of fluke in the river and the northern areas of the bay from the Mantoloking Bridge into the Canal. Use killies and spearing in the bay and rivers for best results. Small bucktails with a teaser tied 18" above the bucktail has been the best rig to use. Keep that rig moving to avoid the crabs! We have plenty of snappers spread out in this same area now too. SPearing or small silver lures will catch the snappers for the kids. Crabbing is excellent and the crabs are big and filled with meat! Bunker or chicken the traps will get you all of the crabs you want. If using chicken, please keep the kids away from it. It is very easy to get sick from raw chicken when the kids are eating or drinking after touching the chicken. Honestly, bunker works better anyway, it just does not last as long as chicken.
