    Fishing Report for August 13th
August 13th, 2011 by Indian River Marina

Well the White Marlin open is in the books and soon we should get more reports of where the fish are actually being caught. The boats have been kind of tight lipped during tournament time. There were numerous releases in the Tournament which is good news for those venturing out for White Marlin and other offshore species, which is evident by all the blue flags flying in the basin this morning. Another good sign were the Big Eye Tuna that were being brought in to the scales. None of our boats won any of the divisions in the Tournament, but I’m happy to say the Marina Managers husband won the Blue Marlin category. Congratulations to Capt. Todd Kurtz on the “Restless Lady” for their first place 699.5 lb Blue Marlin and their second place Wahoo.

There are Yellowfin being caught out in the canyons, along with the White Marlin. Capt. Smallwood on the charter boat “Dana Lynn” had a good trip out to the canyons Saturday and caught 21 Dolphin (Mahi) up to 20 lbs, most in the Wilmington. In closer to shore, the Dolphin (Mahi) have finally shown up in the area around the Lightship Buoy, which opens up some offshore species to the smaller boat anglers.

Further inshore they are getting Flounder and Sea Bass from the area of “B” Buoy, the Old Grounds and on the reef sites. There are also some Ling being caught out there by fisherman fishing for Sea Bass and Flounder.

Sunday morning Update for Inshore, some of the boats fishing the Old Grounds on Saturday reported a nice school of Mahi (Dolphinfish) passed through the area, with one boat boating 21 of the great tasting fish. So have a rod ready with a plug or have cut bait ready to chum them in then cast a unweighted baited hook into the fray.

In the Inlet and Back Bays there are still Flounder being caught along with some Bluefish, Rockfish and finally Croaker. The Croaker have moved into the Back Bays in numbers, which is putting some smiles on anglers faces. Many of these fish are of the larger size and double headers are common. Along with the Croaker, fisherman are catching Sand Perch, Spot, Porgy, Flounder and even some short Seatrout. So for those with smaller boats the fishing has gotten much better.

Wednesday there was an important event with the sinking of the USS Arthur W. Radford on the Del-Jersey-Land Reef, 26 miles out of Indian River Inlet. The 564′ Spruance class destroyer was sunk in 130′ of water and is the largest ship ever sunk off the East Coast for the purpose of making an artificial reef. This was a joint effort by Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland and many thanks go out to Jeff Tinsman of Delaware Fish & Wildlife for making it happen. The ship will rise up off of the bottom to about 60 to 65 feet below the surface. Not only will this make fantastic habitat for bottom species, it will also attract the Pelegic species as well. I’m fortunate to have witnessed this event and looking forward to fishing it in the future. Below are some photo’s of the sinking (by the way disregard the date, camera went to reset)

There are Charters still available for both Offshore and Inshore, just call at the Marina at 302-227-3071 and ask for Carolyn, she’ll be glad to get you in contact with one of the charter boats.

    Fishing Report for August 2nd
August 2nd, 2011 by Indian River Marina

Fishing continues to be good although some spots for tuna have gotten a little slow. The water temps went up last weekend and it seems the bite at the Hot Dog for Yellowfin as slowed with the change in temperature. Tuna are still being caught in the area south of the Poorman’s and the other canyons, but it seems they bite at one one day then it seems it switches to another location. The White Marlin are still being caught and the Blue flags are seen on a number of boats returning from offshore. This should be a good sign for the White Marlin Open coming up next week. There are still Mahi being caught in massey’s Canyon, along with Bluefin Tuna.

Further Inshore the boats fishing out by the “B” buoy have been getting Flounder, Black Seabass and amazingly for this time of year Ling. The Ling catches show that the water temperatures on the bottom are still on the cool side, while the surface temperatures are warm. The artificial reef sites and wrecks are still giving up some Tog and Triggerfish.

In the Inlet and Back Bays, the fishing is continuing to be good with catches of Flounder, Spot, Bluefish, some small croaker and Rockfish are still being caught. The Flounder are coming from not only the Inlet, but Rehoboth and Indian River Bays. The keeper to throw back ratio is low, but some of the flatfish are of a good size. Crabbing continues to be good in the upper reaches of Indian River Bay, up into the river.

Unfortunately I haven’t received any photo’s for this week and as they become available I get them on here.

The Marina had a very successful Arts & Seafood Festival this past Saturday and Thank You to all who attended.

For those who were wondering, the U.S.S. Radford is scheduled for sinking next Tuesday at the Del-Jersey-Land Reef site 26 miles out of Indian River Inlet. This Spruance class destroyer will add to the reef where there have already been a few ships sunk last year. The ship is over 500 feet long and the largest ever sunk off the East Coast for the purpose of creating Marine habitat. The alternate dates are Wednesday August 10th and Thursday August 11th.

There are still charters available out of Indian River Marina and still plenty of fish to be caught, so if your looking to get some tasty fillets call the Marina at 302-227-3071 and ask for Carolyn. She’ll help set you up with a Charter Captain. Until then, Good Luck and Tight Lines.

Fishing Report for July 27 (July 26, Continued)
July 27th, 2011 by Indian River Marina

This week’s report had so much to pass along that we decided to make it in two editions so we can post all the great photos.

Kyle Amrheim of Felton, PA caught this 8.3-lb. Flounder while fishing the Indian River Inlet using live mullet.

John Spezaile of Bethany, DE and Jeff Gotshaw of Rockville, MD caught this 41.6-lb. Yellowfin Tuna outside the Hot Dog.

Dave Smith and Jim Robinson of Milford, DE caught these nice 32- to 33-inch Rockfish weighing in at 15 lbs. in the Indian River Inlet using live spot.

The photo may be a bit fuzzy, but it is still a nice fish. David Saunders of Harrington, DE caught this 12-lb., 31-inch Bluefish on a fly in Indian River Inlet.

Bob Youndy of Brownstown, PA caught this 9.3-lb., 29-inch Flounder on the Buoy Line with minnow and squid.

Novice Fisherwoman Emily O’Leary of Carlisle, PA caught this keeper Flounder on her “First Ever Cast,”, while fishing the Indian River Inlet with a minnow.

Twelve-year-old Kyle Sanchez of Camden, DE was fishing in the Indian River Inlet with his grandparents and caught this 3.7-lb. Flounder on squid and minnow.

Six-year-old Austin Smith of Vienna, VA caught these nice Flounder on spot. They tipped the scale at 5, 2.5 and 2 lbs.

I had to save this next photo for last mainly because of the method of fishing and the size of the fish.

Randy Colona of Rehoboth Beach, DE was fly fishing off the rocks at Indian River Inlet when he caught this Doormat 12-lb., 31-inch Flounder at 2:30 a.m. Now that is a big Flounder on any fishing method, but on a fly it is outstanding.

Now is the time to book a charter with the Indian River Marina Charter Fleet or make reservations for a spot on the headboat “Judy V” to get in on some of this great fishing. Be sure to call early to get on a charter before the best dates are gone. You can call us here at the marina, (302) 227-3071 and ask for Carolynn, who will help set you up with a charter captain.

Remember the Indian River Marina Arts & Seafood Festival is this Saturday, July 30. There will be dozens of vendors displaying their marine-oriented art work and wares, plus you may pick up some nice bargains. Hook ‘em & Cook ‘em will be selling their great seafood dishes and the IRM Cafe’ will have their Pulled Pork, BBQ Chicken, beer, wine and other menu items. There will be live music, displays and many fun things for the young ones to do, from a bounce house, to fish printing, games, a pinata and Lollipop the Clown. So as you see, there will be something to do for all ages. You may even be lucky and see a really large fish come to the scales as happened when one of our charters brought in a Blue Marlin weighing mor than 500 lbs. during a previous Arts & Seafood Festival.

Photos are courtesy of Deanna Adams of Hook ‘em & Cook ‘em Bait and Tackle. They have all the supplies you need from live bait to fishing gear to fish cleaning and fresh seafood sales.

Hope to see you here and until then, Good Luck and Tight Lines.

Mate Rob Dorman, John Kucyk, Jeff McMahon, Marcus Chacona and Capt. Vernon Lee of the “American Ambition” fished the Baltimore Canyon and brought back the bigest Wahoo to date for Indian River Marina, weighing 41 lbs. They also brought back four Yellowfin tuna.

Pete Campbell of Smyrna, DE caught this 5.9-lb. flounder using live Spot in the Indian River Inlet.

Mike Rhodes, Chad Johnson, Mike Gordecki and Gary Dengler of Reading, PA, along with Brian Werner and Ethan Rhodes of Dewey Beach, DE and Kevin Easlinger of Dover, DE fished with Vernon Lee on the “American Ambition” and hooked up with some nice Yellowfin tuna south of the Poor Man’s Canyon.

Tom Gessler, Sr., Chip Roman, Will Ernest, Fran Gessler and Tom Gessler, Jr., were fishing at the Poor Man’s Canyon and hooked up with a 108-lb. Bluefin tuna, 40-lb. Wahoo and four Yellowfin Tuna.

Sandi Panik and her husband Barry of Fredrick, MD landed this 49.8-lb. Swordfish while fishing the Poor Man’s Canyon overnight.

    To be continued tomorrow.

    Fishing Report for July 20
July 20th, 2011 by Indian River Marina

The weather this week has been hot, but that doesn’t seem to deter the fish from biting. The big story continues to be the incredible offshore bite this year. From Yellowfin and Bluefin Tunas to White and Blue Marlin, the catch reports have been great and boats are returning with multiple flags flying. With the number of blue flags flying (White Marlin), it should be a good omen for the upcoming White Marlin Open. The fish are being caught from the close inshore spots like the Jackspot and the Hambone, to the 30 fathom line and Massey’s Canyon, out to the deep water in the Wilmington Canyon. Besides the normal catches of pelagic species, there has seemed to be an increase in the number of Golden and Blue Tilefish being caught by deep dropping in the Canyons. There are reports of more Wahoo and even Cobia being caught, along with the ever-popular and tasty Dolphin (Mahi Mahi).

Further inshore, anglers are catching Flounder, Black Sea Bass, Tautog and Triggerfish from the wrecks, artificial reefs, Buoy line and the Old Grounds. If you’ve never tried them, Triggerfish are great table fare, and this year it seems they are coming in more than normal.

In the Inlet and Back Bays, there are still Flounder being caught, along with Rockfish, Spot, some Croaker (just starting) and even an occasional King Whiting (Sea Mullet to some). Crabbing continues to be good from the Back Bays and up to the Indian River Power Plant.

Here are a few photos of recent catches.

Dan Selby of “Misdemeanor Charters” forwarded this photo of a nice Rockfish. It was Heather’s first Rockfish and Measured 32″, what a great first Rock!

Jim Goff and family booked a charter on the “Bluewater Obsession” out of Indian River Marina and caught over 50 Sea Bass, keeping eight with the largest at 18″, six Flounder, keeping two with the largest being 24″.

Much of the talk around the Inlet the past few weeks is the effect the bridge construction would have on the larger boats being able to have the clearance to transit with the up coming tournaments. Two meetings were held voicing these concerns and what could be done to allow the larger boats to have a safe transit through the area. Capt. Bert Adams volunteered the Headboat “Judy V” to show representatives from the Delaware Legislature, DelDOT, the Coast Guard, Skanska, DNREC (including the marina) and concerned boat owners first-hand the affect on transiting the area. A meeting was held afterward to discuss possible solutions and express ideas. Within days, DelDOT and parties involved worked out a solution which was presented at the second meeting. With this solution, clearance will be satifactory for the boats transiting through the inlet at this critical time of bridge construction. For further information, visit www.irib.deldot.gov.

Don’t forget to circle July 30th on your calendar for the Indian River Marina Arts & Seafood Festival. There will be many marine- and fishing-based arts and crafts, live music, food by Hook ‘em & Cook ‘em and IRM Cafe’, along with other water-related activities. Don’t forget the kiddies as there will be plenty of fun things for them to do, including a bounce house, pinata, fish printing, games and Lollipop the Clown. See you there, and until then good luck and tight lines.

    Fishing Report for July 11th
July 11th, 2011 by Indian River Marina

It looked like another great weekend for the boats fishing out of Indian River Inlet, both offshore and closer to the beach.

Offshore, the boats fishing the Canyons had some great catches of Yellowfin Tuna, White Marlin, Dolphin (Mahi), Sharks and even Golden Tilefish. It seems as if Poorman’s Canyon is showing much more activity and boats were returning with some nice numbers of Tuna.

Closer inshore, the boats fishing the buoy line and the aftificial reefs were catching Flounder, Sea Bass, Bluefish and Trigger Fish. There were still even some Ling being caught, which is a bit late in the year for them. It seems that there were more Flounder caught along the buoy line than Sea Bass, though.

In the Inlet and Back Bays, there are still Flounder and Rockfish being caught with many Rockfish being caught on live Spot. In addition to the Flounder and Rock, there are large numbers of Spot being caught, and there haveeven been a few small croaker showing up. Crabbing continues to be good up in the Indian River and in the Indian River Bay.

Here are some photos from the last few days.

Here’s the photo of the White Marlin released by the “Mega-Bite.”

Brian Salucci of Newark, DE caught this great 24.2-lb. Bull Dolphin (Mahi) with Capt. Larry Cole on the “Makai” in the Baltimore Canyon.

Jay Taylor, Joe Morrisy and Vince Luciani of Rehoboth, DE, Mike Flemming of Milton, DE, along with Jason and Jake Smith of Pennsylvania, had a great trip to the Baltimore Canyon on the “Erie Mar.” The Tuna were caught using Ballyho, while the Golden Tilefish were caught deep dropping with Squid.

Parker Smith of Vienna, VA, caught this nice 24″, 6.1-lb. Flounder, along with threeother keepers while he was fishing the Indian River Inlet using live minnows.

Ken Evans, Steve Warren and Mickey Payne of Georgetown, DE, were fishing in the Indian River Inletwith live Spot and landed these 11 Flounder, the largest weighing in at 6.2 lbs.

The Charter boats are filling their trips, so be sure to book one soon to get the date you want. If it’s headboat fishing you’re looking for, be sure to call “Hook ‘em & Cook ‘em” Bait and Tackle to reserve a spot on one of their half-day or full-day trips.

Mark the date for the Indian River Marina Arts & Seafood Festival on July 30. There will be vendors showing their nautical art work and wares, food, live entertainment and lots of activities for the young ones, from Lollipop the Clown, to a pinata, fish printing and more.
