40lb bass like this one by Brian McAllister will be the mainstay of fishing the next 2 months
This past week wasn’t anything to get excited about as Mother Nature took over the sands and the seas. Heavy winds and rain plagued the participation level this week, but on Saturday we had one decent day where guys got out and caught a few blowfish in the bay, and then Sunday got ugly again. I set out in the morning with Mark Cornelius on Sunday for some puffers and after one look at the bay I was back home by 6
o A.M. Things are not only going to cool down this week but the weather should improve enough to see guys starting to set up on the sands for stripers. The L.B.I. Surf Classic starts next week and Basil and Nick have the shop ready for another year of bass-mania at the Jersey coast. There is a steady supply of bunker and fresh clams as well as a ton of spots to be had and plenty of green crabs for the tog hunters. Speaking of which, guys have been sneaking out on the tip of the south jetty (with caution) and slamming the blackfish. This coming week should be quite productive with more boats getting to fish as well, and the wrecks are lousy with sea bass and togs right now, and when we can all get out there again it will definitely be on! I know of a bunch of boats that are catching some impressive “must be released” fluke in the bay as well as on the surf, and again, those fish must be painfully returned to the water. The bluefish continue to please in the inlet and before the east winds came the jetty was a comfortable place to hide from the heavy southeasterly winds, so some dudes went and passed time chunking blues out there. Guys are telling me that the tuna fishing isn’t quite done yet either, and as soon as they can get out to the canyons they’ll load the boats a couple more times. So as is customary this time of year, the buggies will be seen on the beaches and we’ll share the sands with the surfers for the fall, and the big cow bass will come, and all will be well! We should see some more kingfish off the finger jetties of L.B.I. and those fish are a good meal to fill a bucket with as well. Fresh clams and sandworms are the bait of choice. There are bass being here and there, and soon you’ll see Bob Massa sneaking around the north end hittin’ all the honey holes where he sets up camp and usually rolls into the shop with the first keeper or two of the year. Then we all say, “Alright, time to hit it.” So we’ll see you when you sign up for another successful fall bass and bluefish derby, and may all of us fill our pockets with cash. And, the shop encourages everyone to eat what we catch as not to waste, so I am really looking forward to supplying my Dad with all that bluefish meat. He will enjoy it, he makes a killer blue-fish cake. Basil has the chairs out, and he always looks forward to being harassed while he tries to work, so feel free. We’ll see you all down at Barnegat Light bait and tackle, and good luck and great fishing to all and as always, be safe.
